Tufted Chair Makeover ~ Vintage DIY Style

Let me introduce you to my other purple lady, the one on the right. She has fantastic curves, tufted design, and itchy, scratchy, indoor/outdoor carpet-like upholstery. Wait….those things don’t go together, right? In either event, it’s time for a tufted chair makeover.

Pair of Vintage Chairs Before Tufted Chair Makeover by Larissa of Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

Can I just say that this chair was so uncomfortable that not one of my 6 kids, my husband, or me, wanted to sit on either one of them . If you wear thin clothes or bare flesh touching that fabric…ouch! No wonder someone sold them. Undoubtedly, it is time for a chair makeover.

This pair had completely different lines and spoke to me in different vibes. The one on the left looked to be farmhouse girl, while the other just screamed, “Dress me up please!”  You didn’t know furniture can speak did you?  tsk.

CAN’T WIN

I saved the best for last with this pair. The farmhouse girl got her feed sack makeover last week and caused quite a stir among some folks on social media. Now, don’t get me wrong, the majority of people have rave reviews, but boy were there some haters. And I quote, “Oh no, no, no” or how about, “Oh good Lord.”  Really??

I found that most of those naysayers were older women who must have not had anything to do but criticize.  It was a fun time of banter though.  As one said, “I liken it to knowing you’ve reached the top when Weird Al Yankovic makes a song about you.”  I have arrived.

DIY TIME

Back to the curvy lady…  ooh, it was such fun taking off that upholstery. Additionally, I have to give credit to the last upholsterer because my hands looked like I had been in a fight with an angry wet cat. That upholstery was not going to shift! Also, not to mention my back was speaking volumes as well. (or could it be I’m getting older…nah)

Likewise, even my youngest boy had a blast yanking off that welting.

When he was done, he was huffing and puffing and declared, “I’m bigger now. I think I’m going to be as strong as Dada. I think I’m even going to be as strong as Dabio”. Hahahaha…ever watch Wild Kratts?  Dabio is a make-fun character of Fabio. You have to see it. Seriously, that kid cracks me up!

Next, once down to bare bones it was time to dress up this fancy lady.

THE REVEAL

I’ve always had a thing for linen. It’s such a soft, natural fiber fabric and all I could envision was linen for this tufted chair makeover. In addition, mixing it up with a pretty rose fabric just gave it a little more feminine appeal, don’t you think?

With that in mind, aside from the buttoned up back, my favorite part of this chair is the kidney shaped seat.

Additionally, do you see the coordinating welting?

Truth be told, I seriously wanted this chair for my bedroom, but I already have one…sigh. What is more, how about that carved leg design? I accented it by highlighting with a light beige color.

Furthermore, every lady has to look good from the backside, so I dressed her up proper.

Don’t you just love this mix of fabrics? Also, I’m happy to say that this lovely beauty was up for sale in my online shop and was purchased within an hour or so. Finally, a happy ending.

That chair turned out beautiful. I think if I tried re-doing furniture for a living I’d soon end up on an episode of hoarders! How do you ever part with such gorgeous pieces?

I can’t believe there were folks who criticized the feedsack chair! That, my friend, was a stroke of genius and nothing less. And this chair is equally amazing 🙂

Where did you learn to upholster things? They are beautiful!

    • Larissa says

Thank you, Lisa! I honestly just picked it up, but I did have a great uncle and my grandfather who upholstered.

  6. Mariella says

I am wondering where you get your upholstery material from. I just love the combination you used on this chair and was thinking I would try and attempt one myself

    • Larissa says

I’m sure you can, Mariella. While most often I get my fabric at JoAnn, this time I found remnants from JoAnn at Goodwill. They must have received a donation or something, but I was in 7th heaven! 😀

  7. Fran says

Love what you did with this chair especially the two fabrics and painting. It is a totally different chair!
