Farmhouse Bathroom Remodel Reveal

Today’s the day! WAHOO! Yes, I’m excited and yes, I can show you the final product of all our work in our one and only bathroom. Now it’s our mini farmhouse bathroom.

Now, for those of you just stopping in, I’d like to take a minute to catch you up to speed. My family and I are remodeling our house (again) and our latest project was our master bedroom, and sort of at the same time our soon-to-be farmhouse bathroom over the last year (while also having babies and a grand ol’ time).

THE BACKSTORY

When we bought our home in 2003, this is what the bathroom looked like. In case you’re wondering, this is a scanned and uploaded photo, so you could get the full effect. Now I am really dating myself. ahem.

1952 Bathroom Before Remodel by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

Cast iron green bathtub with matching green commode, glass shower doors, 3″ creamy white square tiles on the bottom and 1″ white with gold square tiles on top. Berber carpet on the floor, clear corrugated plexiglass type drop ceiling, an indoor/outdoor light complete with outlet attached, and a single mirrored medicine cabinet. Oh yeah, total room for improvement.

First makeover included painting upper tiles dark maroon and the ceiling panels and grids white, added green floor tile, plus mirror and light fixtures, and took out the shower doors.

Second makeover, yanked out the tub and toilet for new fiberglass tub with surround, and put in new floor tile. (another uber old scanned picture)

It wasn’t until a couple years later I painted the upper tile a soft green and changed up the decor. This picture shows after we already tore down the ceiling and getting into gutting it from top to bottom.

Third times a charm, right? tsk.

LONG LAST

Well, this time was for good because we have to replace that window. Plus, we want a clean start, a GIGANTIC do over. All the details about the start of our project, including how we got a massively heavy tub in there are here, and the latest upgrades are all here. Take a minute and catch up…it’s a good read.

Are you ready? We are!!

A big gigantic shout-out to my hubby who is key to this happening. Also, to our kids who were patient as we worked, and my Lord for giving us the ability to take this project on to completion.

Welcome to our new bathroom…

*many thanks for the product provided for our project from Hickory Hardware and eFaucets. (see full disclosure )

For the sake of understanding how this all came together, let me explain all the pieces to this fantastic puzzle.

LOOK UP

Let’s start with the top. The ceiling is now one sheet of wood beadboard. Then, we add a coffered setting with pine boards and trim. I could just sit and look at it forever. So much better than that corrugated plastic drop ceiling.

Now for our vanity in our farmhouse bathroom. After a year or so of searching for the perfect fitting dresser, I found this treasure on Craigslist while taking a brain break during my stay in the NICU with our daughter. God has a sense of humor.

Upcycled Dresser as Farmhouse Bathroom Vanity by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces #farmhouse #bathroom #diy #home #homedecor

It fits like a glove in the tiny space we had allotted, and it came out just as I had envisioned it. You’d have to see the before to really appreciate it. Don’t worry, I have a plan for the old vanity. Nothing goes to waste around here!

DOWN BELOW

Below the dresser is the freezer basket I showed you in my last post. It is from when our chest freezer died (also while in the NICU). I just buzzed the handles off with my Dremel and voila!

I sanded down the dresser top and then stained with one of my favorite stains by Varathane, Early American. We’ve used it on our bedroom faux beams and on our Pottery Barn knock-0ff as well. To finish it off with a die-hard topcoat, I used my new-found love, Waterlox in satin, that I mentioned in my previous post as well. Boy does this stuff work like a dream!

Our dresser did not have that backsplash prior to our retro-fit, but we felt it necessary to add it because our baseboard kept the vanity from fitting snugly against the wall, which caused it to set about a half-inch out. That would mean water spray going down there and possibly other goodies – with 6 kids you just never know.

The sink is from Home Depot and our brushed nickel faucet was purchased from eFaucets as mentioned in my previous post.

The cabinet I painted in a “seconds” paint from Home Depot, but it’s a nice charcoal/dark chocolate semi-gloss that really sets this piece apart from the rest of the room. I kept the pulls in their original aged state – gorgeous!

We were able to add drawer slides to the drawers from Hickory Hardware. This not only makes the drawers easier to open (most antique dresser drawers can be pretty rough), but also gives extra support we need.

And who doesn’t love pink peonies in an antique blue ball jar…swoon…  These beauties are closed when I brought them in a little bit ago. However, the warmth of our home causes them to open up so beautifully.

MIRROR, MIRROR

The mirror I kept from a custom order for a dresser-turned-media-console for a client and I love its dark color. Above it is my old farmhouse light fixture scored for a $1 at a garage sale and painted in a Antique Nickel spray paint by Rust-Oleum. Don’t you just love the frosted embossed globes? The before is in my previous bathroom post.

Next, in our farmhouse bathroom makeover you can see a recently thrifted vintage soap advertisement. It perfectly suits the decor.

And on the other side was what my mom would call a “God wink”. I needed to purchase a toilet paper holder and refused to pay $20 for a single fixture. tsk. Not when my kids will bust it in a day! I went in to Goodwill to try to find something else I needed,. Then, there I find a brushed nickel TP stand and a basket planter, perfect as a trash can.  All for about $5.

Now for the shower and tub. Gotta love the classic feel of white subway tile with gray grout. It’s so refreshing and crisp. Both the wall and floor tiles, and grout came from Home Depot. The paint color is Classic Gray by Glidden.

The tub fixture came from eFaucets through eBay as well. Isn’t that cross pattern handle perfect? For added fun, I just had to create a tub tray with a board of my barn wood and some old, rusty window sash handles from a set of curbside windows. Now all I need is the time for a good soak.

FIXTURES

Up above is a new addition also from eFaucets, which they graciously provided for our remodel. Our old one was my absolute favorite shower head, but it just would not go in our new bathroom with its olive-green color. Not only does this new shower head and accessories look better, but I’m happy to say that it does a wonderful job – this coming from someone who has returned several shower heads in previous years because their spray was weak.

HAPPY PLACE

Now for the other side of the room. With 8 of us, we needed plenty of space to hang our towels. Thanks again to Hickory Hardware for providing us hooks for our space.

This is my favorite collection of memories in here. My broken ladder found with my pallet treasure, old bottles found for pennies, a tin cup, railroad spikes, and other thrifted and found objects.

Beside the ladder it is the cut-out from our dresser top that I paint to look like an old bath sign. (You can make one using my tutorial too) And above it is an old rake with a couple of small, thrifted prints and dried botanticals.

MORE GOODNESS

On the opposite wall is my rack made from weathered pallet wood and the drawers taken off the antique treadle sewing machine makeover I just completed.

There were only 3 drawers, but 4 brackets. The last bracket is a perfect for holding hand towels and wash cloths. I love it!

Last, in our farmhouse bathroom remodel is the floor…another favorite feature. All our other floors had been vinyl tile or carpet. However, this time I wanted something to add dimension and something I could SCRUB. My husband did an excellent job for his first time, don’t you think?

It’s bright, clean, and ready for our large family.

Funny how a tiny bathroom can take a whole post to tour. However, all sorts of effort is put into this remodel. My husband gets my applause for his wonderful work. In addition, my children for all their help preparing a meal, helping with chores and being patient as we work. I am so thankful.

IT IS FINISHED

With all the supplies, parts, fixtures, decor, and all, our final dollar amount was less than $1,100. All the accents are either handmade, thrifted or found curbside. We can’t create our own tile, but you know we would if we could. (wink, wink)

I hope you enjoyed our final farmhouse bathroom tour. Thank you for allowing us to share. We’d love it if you would share our hard work with others too!

I can’t thank you enough, Mary Beth. Yes, everything did come together and I’m contiued to be amazed because I don’t try very hard to make it work. Stuff just happens. A blessing for sure. 🙂

  8. Marie@The Interior Frugalista says

Ah ha, so that’s where the old sewing machine drawers went – love love it! I’ve enjoyed reading the posts leading up to the reveal where you shared the incredible deals you sniffed out online. My favorite part of your room makeovers is how you repurpose EVERYTHING. Your bathroom is fabulous…another magazine worthy makeover!

  9. Funky Junk Interiors says

Oh Larissa! This bathroom makeover took my breath away! I just love the contrasts. I’ve always been a fan of wood against white and this most certainly does it for me! Gorgeous! You must be ecstatic to walk into this space every day! Most definitely pinning this beauty. 🙂

    • Larissa says

You made my day, Donna. It one of those things where I like it and it’s all that matters, but are curious what others think… you just never know. Thank you!

  10. Judy says

Wow Wow and WOW. I’m a new visitor to your site and you’ve got me hooked. I love the entire bathroom and the fact that you did it so economically has me awe struck. I especially love the rack made with the sewing machine drawers, I noticed it in the first completed room picture, it is so unique. I want to go home and redo a bathroom NOW. Thank you.

    • Larissa says

Hahaha…love your enthusiasm, Judy. Yes, those drawers struck me right off and I wasn’t going to let them go. So glad you stopped by!

  11. Deb says

Wow looks beautiful Larissa! I love every bit of this space. Subway Tile is the way to go…makes the perfect dramatic yet clean line difference. PInned!

    • Larissa says

Thank you, Deb! I’m hooked on the tile, and can’t wait to use it again. Thanks for sharing, too!

  12. Diane G. says

So clever and so attractive! If I could wave a wand, I’d have exactly this in my guest room bath. Same space,.
Unfortunately, My husband is ill, so can’t do all the things he used to do:(
We love beadboard..it can solve many problems , add interest and look so great. I want it everywhere!

    • Larissa says

I need that wand Diane! Thank you. Sorry to hear about your husband – got kids to help? Beadboard is a wonderful medium and we have it elsewhere too!

      • Brandy McNeal says

Is the beadboard on the walls the same as the one on the ceiling?

          • Brandy McNeal says

Thanks! We are looking at doing that as well. Wasn’t sure if there was a specific type to use since it’s in the bathroom. Hubby said probably not. Just paint it with glossy paint and should be good to go.

    • Larissa says

I love your response! Thank you so much for the compliments. 🙂

  13. kristi says

i know you already mentioned it somewhere on your blog but what is the paint color??
    Looks beautiful!!!!

    • Larissa says

Yes, meant to mention it again this time, but it’s called Classic Gray by Glidden. Thank you!

  14. Kimm at Reinvented says

I love everything about it! Our master bath desperate needs new flooring, so I just might have to copy your beautiful tile! 🙂

  15. Sara Jo Floyd says

We just did a farmhouse style master bathroom reno too which took us 9 months! We love how yours turned out! Beautiful job! We wanted similar tile on our floors, but were told that our floor had to much bounce and the grout would crack. So we went with a flexible “luxury vinyl”. This may sound like an oxymoron, but it actually looks really nice and is waterproof. Keep up the good work!

  16. Sherry Fram says

AWESOME bathroom!! Now if I could just transport your bathroom to my house then all the work would be done! Love love the vanity.! Kudos to the hubs for the floor! It looks fantastic & very professional!

    • Larissa says

tee hee hee…thank you, Shanna! 🙂 We love that it’s ours and it works!!

  17. Michelle@DandelionPatina says

Well, what a transformation. I love the dresser/vanity and that subway tile. I bet you are so glad to be done Larissa!? What is next?

    • Larissa says

Absolutely glad to be done and it’s a bit surreal too. We are definitely hitting the kitchen soon, but not sure if it’s next. Time will tell!

  18. Bobbie says

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! You did an amazing job! Okay, got to go, I need a tissue for all this drooling. 🙂

    • Larissa says

Hahaha…just rip it out. 😉 Really though, I plan to use our old vanity in another repurpose. I try not to waste a thing!

  19. Pam says

This is such a pretty bathroom makeover! I really like the gray and white floor tile, and the dresser-to-vanity makeover.

    • Larissa says

Thank you so much, Pam! We are delighted to have it back and looking better than ever. So glad you stopped by!

  20. Kathy says

    Gorgeous! I am now inspired!

  21. Betsy Holets says

WOW!! What an amazing transformation. That ceiling is incredible and the finish on the vanity is gorgeous! Love all the details, especially the sewing machine drawer storage.

    • Larissa says

Hahaha…thank you! Yes,the ceiling was so nice to have done and clean, and those drawers were just meant to be.

    • Larissa says

You are awesome, Debbie. Thank you for your encouragement. 🙂

  22. Sweet Auburn Life says

Oh Larissa, it’s beyond amazing. You and hubby are so talented. Everything is done to perfection. I love that so much is thrifted and repurposed. Love the addition of the ladder and rake, really give the room some personality. My favourites are the sink unit and the repurposed sewing machine drawer piece but it’s all super. You have given me so much inspiration for my own bathroom redo. Have a great weekend. Jen x

    • Larissa says

How sweet of you to say, Jen. Bathrooms can be blucky, but all worth the effort in the end. So glad you stopped by!

    • Larissa says

Yay for you Julie! A bathroom can be so much work, but well worth the effort. May you happily enjoy your new space!

  23. Kari says

I LOVE this! First thought was if Baths are only 25 cents I am buying a roll of quarters and heading south so I can take a few long soaks to fully take this makeover all in! lol Then I realized one bathroom/8 peep I would be persona non grata! So just loving it from afar, so many favs starting with the ceiling – what a dif the pine board and trim makes around the beadboard it adds an incredible new dimension! I have always wanted a dresser vanity and have my eye on a dry sink to convert. I have been holding off worried about water on the countertop. I have hard water on the farm so straight vinegar is my best friend for zapping white spots not sure if that is compatible with Waterlox. I hope you can give us an update on the Waterlox in a few mths. I never thought it would be possible to add drawer slides to an old dresser so thanks for that link. Love the contrast with the charcoal – makes me really re-think my all white bthrm plan. Not sure if the dividers were already in the dresser or if you added those but great idea so things are not rolling all around. And finally, thank heavens I am not coming as regardless of screws and mounting brackets those sewing machine drawer would be coming home with me 😉 I can’t wait to see what room you tackle next, you are always so inspiring!

    • Larissa says

Your comment rocks, Kari! I had meant to show the water beading on the Waterlox, but I gurantee you that this mom of 8 is not worried a lick about her 6 kids getting water on it. We did have to customize the drawers with dividers so that it could slide easily in and around the sink without losing the functionality of the drawer storage capability. I’d have to follow you home if you snatched my drawers (sewing machine drawers that is). 😉

  24. heather says

It turned out so beautifully, Larissa! My favorite things have to be the ceiling, and the floor and shower surround tile though…AND the vanity, of course, can’t leave that out! Great, great makeover!

    • Larissa says

Thank you so much, Heather! You are a makeover pro and your words mean so much. 🙂

      • Betsy Morgan says

What did you put around the window? Trim or tile?

  25. Bliss says

It turned out fantastic Larissa. What do the offspring say?

    • Larissa says

Thank you!! They are very excited to not only have a new bathroom, but that it’s DONE. 🙂

  26. Funky Junk Interiors says

My fav bathroom appeared in the Party Junk lineup. Yay! And that means one thing… it’s getting featured this weekend. 🙂 So in LOVE!

  27. Rhonda says

I am visiting after seeing your bathroom featured on Miss Mustard Seed’s blog and thought I’d pop in and tell you how gorgeous it is! Love the vanity and mirror you chose and the subway tile is gorgeous! Beautiful:)

    • Larissa says

So glad you took a minute to say “Hi!”. We are happy to have this project complete and are ready for the next one. I say owning a home is like the owning the Golden Gate bridge. Once the complete repair to the other end, they start all over again. 🙂

  28. Diane says

Love the bath, the sewing machine drawers, the wall tiles and the floor…great looking bathroom, but 1 bathroom with 6 kids it must be hell in your house in the mornings!

We are just renovating what was an old hotel here in Portugal, it originally had 13 bedrooms with en suites and but we are turning it into a house with now 8 bedrooms with en suites but in total there are 12 bathrooms in the house and all for just two of us, but I cant wait for the family to descend on us and fill the house when its finished! Guess who wont be cleaning all those bathrooms!

    • Larissa says

Hahaha…it’s all good. We homeschool and everyone gets what needs done in good time, plus they’re still young. 🙂 Sounds like you have your hand full!! Hope you have fun with it.

  29. Deana says

I have just found your blog tonight in the way of Pinterest about a Drum Table Makeover from virginiasweetpea.
We also are repurposing an old Singer Pedal Style Sewing Machine and love what you had done with the boxes..
Can you tell my what type of brackets you had used to hold up your boxes and if you purchased them where did you get them. I was trying to make out what they looked like in your picture but was not able to.
Love the bathroom by the way.. Amazing

    • Larissa says

So nice to have you, Deana! The brackets that I used were the ones I took off the machine. I’m not sure if every treadle sewing machine is designed like ours, but the brackets that held on the drawers to the base came off by removing some bolts. Then, we just attached them to the board mounts. Hopefully you have the same! Let me know. 🙂

      • Deana says

Thank You for getting back to me Larissa,
I will have to go out later or this weekend and see if we have the same type of brackets or what ours look like and see if I can use them at all..
I will let you know. 🙂

  30. Voineveir says

    • Larissa says

I’m so glad you enjoyed our bathroom remodel! I hope you are able to get yours done to your liking as well. Thanks for stopping by!

  32. Nancy says

Absolutely love the sewing machine drawer idea! Genius!

  33. Sue Saur says

You have a large window in your shower. In our remodel, we would, too. My husband says it won’t work because of the water constantly hitting it. Can you explain how you waterproofed it? Thanks for the inspiration!

    • Larissa says

We replaced it with a vinyl window and vinyl trim, use good caulk, and the mini-blind keeps the water off. Hope this helps!

  34. Nuri Josephus says

YOU.ARE.DA.BOMB.!!! I KNEW IT WOULD LOOK THIS WONDERFUL!!!Oh my oh my I love it!!!!

  35. Tammy says

I am drooling over the details on those sewing machine drawers. They are what caught my eye on your pinterest post! I thought.. “hey! did those come off a sewing machine?” you and the hubs need to pat yourselves on the back – JOB WELL DONE!

    • Larissa says

How awesome! They are one of my favorite things that I’ve kept for myself. We worked hard and it paid off. Thank you!

  36. Julie says

It looks great Larissa. I love using old pieces of furniture in unconventional ways too! The room is perfect! We’re up to house reno number 4, it’s quite an addictive past time. 🙂

    • Larissa says

Kudos to you! Thanks so much for stopping by and showing some love. 🙂

  37. Jennifer says

Amazing job Larissa! I am also using an old dresser mirror in our bathroom. I was contemplating how to hang it since it is so heavy. I wondered how you hung yours? Keep up the nice work – you have a special talent!

    • Larissa says

Thank you, Jennifer! We use eye bolts with heavy duty wire for hanging mirrors and the like. Hope that helps and have fun!

  38. Barb says

I have those same light fixtures!

    • Larissa says

That’s awesome! They have worked well in our design and love the vintage style

  39. Rhonda says

I love your bathroom reno, we have completed one, another to go. We are using an old 3 way vanity mirror, and a treadle sewing machine cabinet for our travertine vessel sink. I hit Pinterest, before I saw your copyright info, so I hope if I do have it in my pinterest board, that I think it should link back here to you, I hope, as I am not so savvy. I’ve been looking for more inspiration for our bath, and am so glad I found yours! Thank you Larissa!

    • Larissa says

That’s sounds like an awesome bathroom! Yes, if you pinned from here it will direct back. Thank you!

  40. Brandy McNeal says

LOVE IT!! I do have a question though. We are going to remodel our girls bathroom and I’m stuck at how to hang the towels after being used. I love the hooks idea but afraid the towels would take too long to dry and would end up musty smelling after a while. How have yours done? My other option is a second shower curtain rod just for the towels. TIA.

    • Larissa says

Thanks! We like the hooks, but on days where humidity is high, I just toss them in a dryer for a quick dry time to prevent any issues. Love your rod idea.

  41. Melva says

Larissa, oh my, what an awesome job! It’s a fantastic transformation! Well worth all the effort: Comgrats to you, hubby and the kids.

    • Larissa says

Thank you for saying so, Melva. We’re so pleased with it. 🙂

  42. Gail says

What an awesome job! In addition to a lot of work, I know it takes a lot of patience and vision…..and you & your family obviously have a lot of both! Thanks so much for sharing

  43. Stephanie Ristow says

    Has the waterlox held up?

    • Larissa says

Yes, wonderfully. We even used it on our kitchen table years ago and love it.

  44. Kacie says

Did you choose a special water resistant beadboard for the ceiling? I’m looking to do the same thing but worried about too much moisture in the bathroom.

    • Larissa says

We used a regular wood 4 x 8 panel. With paint or poly, you can create that moisture protective barrier.

  45. Janelle says

SOOOOO many years later and I found this post while looking for bathroom remodel inspiration. You did such a fantastic job!!!! It’s beautiful <3 My question is how is the dresser top holding up with the Waterlox? Have you had to reapply at all? I have a beautiful antique wood dresser with curved front edges that I want to use for our vanity, but I'm debating if I should add a marble/stone top or keep the wood. Leaning toward keeping the wood but I need some honest feedback on how the Waterlox holds up over a number of years. Thank you so much!!!

You’re too cute, Janelle! It is holding up beautifully. The only thing that I did wrong was set a bottle of Drano on top for about 5 minutes and it left a slight mark (stupid me). I highly recommend it as I redid our kitchen counters with Waterlox and it’s the best.

I have this exact same dresser (with the matching mirror). It was passed down to me from my great grandmother. It’s so fun to see it in your project!

How awesome! I’d love to see it if you want to share it with me via email. Fun!

If anyone can redo a bathroom it’s you Larissa. It is unbelievable what you can do. Your vision is incredible. I love the dresser/mirror and everything else. How could I not ! Pinned it too.
