Harvest Gift Basket ~ Makeover & Lining

Whether you’re at a yard sale, garage sale, thrift store, or even your very own closet, you can always find a basket. I don’t know about you, but I’m a basket addict! They are amazingly created from a natural resource and offer oodles of possibilities for adding to storage, decor, and gifts (to name only a few). Since the autumn season is upon us I feel a harvest gift basket makeover coming on. Take a look at this beauty below.

Thrifted Basket Before Makeover by Larissa of Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces

*post sponsored by Wagner & HomeRight (see full disclosure)

Having friends and family that know you’re fetishes makes it a fun surprise when they bring you such treasures. My daughter found this one at her workplace for me and knew I’d love the design. She is right! It’s a very large one perfect for many uses such as towels, blankets, toys…you get the idea. However, I’d like to show you how I am making it my own.

DIY TIME

As you know, I love my tools, so what better time to break out some of my favorites. First, I pop up my Wagner Small Spray Shelter and set in my Turn Table with basket on top. Then, my Quick Finish Sprayer is my go-to for a project this size. HomeRight offers many sprayers for different needs from inside to out. I’m not wanting to completely cover that gorgeous basket, but rather tone it down a bit. So, I use this product mixed with a bit of paint and water to get the effect I’m after.

Before spraying, I fill up my Quick Finish and test the flow to make sure I’m ready to go. Begin by spraying off the basket and following through and continuing off. That way we get the even coverage we’re after. You can watch in in my video demo below or in these past projects HERE.

Not only can you see that the wash is lightly coating the basket, but also that I’m done in less than five minutes. eep! I’ve brushed many a basket in my day and NOTHING beats spraying. Am I right?

NEXT STEPS

Next, before the whitewash has a chance to cure, I take a lightly dampened rag and wipe off the whitewash on parts I want to reveal the original basket. My goal is to highlight various details to make the basket have more texture and not be flat.

Then, as soon as I’m happy with the outcome, I use the Quick Connect/Release feature to take off the canister and clean up. Don’t you love a quick clean-up? It definitely makes the job easier.

Before I call this harvest gift basket complete, I want to line it using a canvas-like fabric. Since each basket is unique, I’m not going to attempt to tell you how to do it exactly, but rather the general idea. First, I trace the bottom onto my fabric. Second, I measure up the side of the basket to get the highest measurement, and also around the inside perimeter widest point.

Last, assemble the side piece to the bottom and glue in with hot glue.

THE REVEAL

From dated thrifty find to harvest gift basket…yahoo! I’m smitten with the outcome and change. Plus, it’s perfect for the gift-giving too.

Not only did the whitewash refresh it, but the added aging in the rubbed off whitewash gives it a time-worn vibe. Also, I cut that metal hang-tag from an old duct out of our kitchen remodel. I’ve tucked in a few wool blankets (who can live without those, eh?), a homemade beeswax candle, a local artisan honey pot, and a reclaimed pumpkin I create for my online shop.

While it’s stuffed full right now, let’s take a peek at it with the lining so you can see the pretty inside too. Lining baskets really dresses them up. Have you ever tried it?

    The basket is beautiful!

    • Larissa says

Thank you for saying so, Laura. I just love this season.

  2. Janina says

Thanks for the basket lining lesson. If l won the paint sprayer l would white was grass cloth wallpaper! We just moved and l think it would lighten up the room

    • Larissa says

You’re welcome, Janina. That sounds like a therapeutic project! 😀

  3. Holly says

Love it, I especially liked how you lined it. It definitely takes it up a notch!?

    • Larissa says

Thanks, Holly! I don’t know about you, but cleaning the bottom of baskets isn’t the most fun. haha.

  4. Rebecca - NC says

Gorgeous!! Lining the basket adds such a luxurious touch. It takes it from a beautifully painted basket into another realm. I’m going to have to try that. Well done!!!
    ? ??

    • Larissa says

They just seem cleaner with it and easier to care for. Thanks so much, Rebecca. I hope you do try it. 😉

  5. Sandy says

Larissa,. You are always an inspiration to me! I look forward to each blog post. I love your vintage style and the fact that you take items that are cast offs and give them new life!

    • Larissa says

You’ve just made my day, Sandy. Thank you! It is not only a blessing to do what I do (for me anyway), but to get to share with like-minded folk is sweeter yet.

  6. MrsSW says

Larissa – the basket is very pretty. Thank you for sponsoring the giveaway.
    Sheila

  7. MaryAnn Smith says

I have a small stand that I would paint first.

  8. Ginny says

Lining the basket gives it a clean simple look! Would it be difficult to make a removable liner? I would love to try this but we have a dog and her fur gets into everything. I would love to learn how to make a removable liner that can be washed 🙂
I have been wanting to purchase a sprayer and shelter for so long! Winning one would be even better! Thank you so much for the opportunity to win this giveaway!!!

    • Larissa says

Thanks! Not at all. It’s the same idea, but instead of folding and gluing in, just fold and stitch a finished edge. Then, either add ties (or snaps, etc) to the edge. This basket has concave sides which made it better to just glue in. You can see how I insulated this one HERE. I wish I had a set for everyone. Love these!

  9. Deirdre says

I love seeing your tutorials. You always give thorough descriptions that even a novice can follow easily. The Wagner sprayer and shelter have been on my wish list for some time. Thanks to both of you for the giveaway!

    • Larissa says

How wonderful to hear! Thank you, Deirdre. I really do try to make it so anyone can follow along.

  10. Mary Kaiser says

I love how your adorable basket came out! If I win I have a bunch of baskets that need a refresh just like yours. Good job showing us how to do the liner, it brings it up a few notches on the cute scale!!

    • Larissa says

woot! I’m all for cute! 😀 Thanks so much, Mary.

  11. Noelle says

I love the basket and lining! It looks so much better with the whitewash instead of the orange-y brown. I have a little metal table that is on the side porch for packages (and pizza when my daughter orders it — no-contact delivery!) and it needs a nice coat of white paint to perk it up. The sprayer and shelter would be perfect to use! Thanks for all your awesome ideas and for the giveaway!

  12. Terri Austill says

Love the lining in the basket!

  13. susan says

That basket is beautiful by itself but the lining in the basket really makes it! I’ve not seen that vintage wash paint. Have you used it before? And as always, thank you again for another great giveaway! You’re the best!

    • Larissa says

aww…thanks so much, Susan! Yes, I have years ago, but you can use any paint as a wash as I did with this basket as I didn’t have enough left. Cheaper and more colors available.

  14. Kim says

Love how this brings out the beauty of the basket. I’m a basket lover too! Thank you for the chance to win the sprayer & shelter. I would put it to work on baskets ? and some beautiful chairs I have. God bless you sweet girl.

    • Larissa says

They’re just so stinkin’ addictive, aren’t they? haha. You are most welcome!

  15. Deb Sparkle-Townley says

Nice job! I need to find some baskets now!

  16. Becca says

I LOVE BASKETS!! I pick em up throughout the year at local thrift stores and clean em up, sometimes I paint em, and I always attach Ribbon/bows! Then I fill em for birthdays, Christmas, baby showers etc. Everyone I know gets baskets of love!
Last Easter I donated several Baskets filled with dollar store treats to our church and they went to some very deserving children!
Thank u for showing us how u lined yours with the help of hot glue! It turned out beautiful!!
I would DEFINITELY paint more of em if I won the paint sprayer! Shoot I’d paint EVERYTHING if I had one! Thanks Larissa for the chance to win and for ALLLLL the amazing projects u share with all of us!!!

    • Larissa says

hee hee! You are a gal after my own heart, Becca! Thanks so much. Yes, there truly are endless possibilities with them. Smiles, especially!

  17. Shelley says

I’m absolutely a basket addict. I have a huge collection and every time we stop at a thrift store or yard sale they are on of the first things my eye jumps to.

I love what you’ve done with this one!

And I was just talking to my husband about my need for a spray shelter yesterday! We are currently using a large cardboard box as we prep our new home to move into. I sure appreciate the opportunity to enter your contest!

    Thank you!

    • Larissa says

Yessssss!! Me too. Thanks for the love, Shelley. I used to be a cardboard box gal, but no more! These are waaaaay better.

  18. Marilyn Peterson says

I love the basket! The paint gives it a completely different personality! And I would love to win this prize!!
I have a small bedside table that I would like to paint. The sprayer and tent would be perfect!

    • Larissa says

Sweet! I’m happy to hear it, Marilyn. Baskets sure are fun. Sounds like you have a perfect project piece.

  19. Andrea Peery says

Love the basket, I really don’t sew so I would have to skip that part. I would love that HomeRight paint sprayer, it looks like it would make painting a lot smoother and faster!!! The basket looks great!!!

    • Larissa says

Thanks! You could definitely just use fabric glue instead of sewing, so give it a try. You’ll love the sprayer and shelter…I do!

  20. Rebecca Drake says

Your basket is beautiful! I really love the lining. I would never have thought to tackle that.
I would use the sprayer on a decorative piece I have been waiting to paint while deciding on the color. Thank you for the giveaway!!

    • Larissa says

You’re so fun! I’m glad you like it. The lining makes it nice for different reasons, but always fun to dress them up too. You’re welcome!

  21. Alexis says

I have to agree with everyone – the lining is a great touch.

  22. Alicia H says

Great project Larissa! I love getting creative as well and am sure to come up with all sorts of items to paint with a sprayer……..so coo! 🙂

    • Larissa says

      Thanks!
No doubt about it. It and the shelter offer so many uses.

  23. Tim says

Someone in my neighborhood just threw away a set of small stools, and I was lucky enough to find them by the dumpster!! They are the perfect size to spray inside of the shelter. The sets are padded and are in really great shape, so I just need to remove that and paint away. .

    • Larissa says

Oooh…sweet score! I just pulled a super nice dog bed out of the trash before the truck picked up the neighbors trash. I’m taking it to the dog shelter as they always need them.

  24. Cathy says

love the basket. Your usage ideas are wonderful as I am always on the look out for baskets. Great job

    • Larissa says

Thank you bunches, Cathy. Basket lovers unite! 😀

  25. Amy says

That basket turned out beautifully! I especially like the antique paint.

    • Larissa says

Isn’t that effect fun? It sure is a blast to use and see boring pieces come to life.

  26. Linda Johnston says

Oh how I would love that prize! I had a very bad case of Covid. At my age, surviving means a great deal and I can think of no other way to celebrate than with a paint sprayer! lol Love the basket. I have one in my stash I think would look good!

    • Larissa says

aww…so glad you are better! I have a cold and glad for a healthy immune system for sure. Sending hugs!

  27. Amy says

I should’ve asked in my first comment, but does that paint only work when sprayed on?

    • Larissa says

No worries! I’m happy to answer any question. It can be used with brush, roller, sprayer…however you like.

  28. Kathy E. says

Larissa, you never fail to inspire me! I have 3 large baskets in the garage up high on a shelf just waiting for being dressed up with some paint and basket liners! How gorgeous they would be all fancy like that! Yep, that would be my first project. Then I’d stuff them with cozy items to decorate my home rather than my garage. 🙂

    • Larissa says

hahaha! I think we all do. Really! I have a stack of baskets as decoration…ahem. 😉 Thanks for the love, Kathy!

  29. Toni says

I’m a basket lover, too, and I have several waiting for their make-over. These items would make short work of that task

    • Larissa says

Yes, they sure would! I just don’t like brushing baskets as much as spraying, so I’m hooked. 😉

  30. Nadine Mesch says

I always love your work ! I have purchased several of your pieces and treasure them.
    your basket is lovely !!

  31. Laurel Spiegelthal says

Love the basket! If I had the sprayer and shelter, I would use it to finish furniture in my budding furniture refurbishing hobby 🙂

    • Larissa says

Thank you, Laurel. Sounds like you’re a kindred spirit. 😀

  32. Lori Sawyer says

Im a basket hoarder!! I use them for everything. You’re always so inspirational!

  33. Doreen S Hill says

I always love being inspired by you!

    • Larissa says

I do believe you just made my day, Doreen. Thank you so much!

  34. Kristina Burkart says

That basket is gorgeous!! I have yet to be able to line one like you have. The Lord has certainly blessed you with amazing talents and creativity!!
    Kristina

    • Larissa says

You are so absolutely sweet, Kristina. I needed that smile. Thank you!

  35. Kara Mellett says

Great giveaway! I’d use the HomeRight Quick Finish Sprayer & Wagner Small Spray Shelter to tackle some decorative shelves that I’ve had forever and they need a new paint job. This would make it so much easier! Thanks for a chance!

  36. Melissa Storms says

Absolutely love the basket, what a beautiful upgrade. I have 2 end tables that belonged to my aunt I would love to refinish.

    • Larissa says

That’s awesome to hear, Melissa. Thanks! Tables are always fun to redo.

  37. aelizabeth Minx says

Love the basket! I think I would like to tackle some of the outdoor furniture

  38. Marietta Walker says

    I. LOVE. THIS. BASKET!

So much so, I can hardly wait for it arrive at my door. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was perfect for holding the fabric for the current quilt I am working on.
I was so happy it was still available in the shop, I had to do a very quiet happy dance since it is late and all are sleeping in my house.

Thank you so much for being so tatlented and making this one just for me!

    • Larissa says

You are a hoot, Marietta! haha! It is headed your way today with bells on. I love that you’re working on a quilt. I’d love to see it when done!

  39. Carroll Xavier says

I love the size and shape of the basket, and you’ve finished it perfectly! I especially like the simplicity of the lining; it adds to rather than distracting from the basket itself. I’m a sucker for baskets and have so many in use in my home 🙂 I’ll be ‘borrowing’ your idea for one that I’ve been wanting to redo.

    • Larissa says

I’m delighted to share, Carroll. Thank you! I like linings to prevent snags on yarn and the like or even on books, etc. I hope you have fun with it!

  40. Michele M. says

Well done – and it is so inspirational how you lined your beautiful vintage basket. I don’t think I have ever seen one quite like that. It looks great. I admire how you are always upcycling things. It is a real talent – and Mother Earth must be smiling at all your efforts to save so much from neglect or landfills.

And thank you soooo much for the giveaway opportunity. I have always admired you guys and those sprayers and tents. I have always wanted and needed them! So again, much appreciated – and I am crossing my fingers!

    • Larissa says

Thank you for your kind words, Michele. It truly is a great way to make use of all that is around us. What a better palce the world would be if there was less waste of all things. Fingers crossed for you!

  41. Shelly says

    Awesomeness, as usual!

  42. Kelly Culp says

Very nice makeover Larissa, as always! I really enjoy your blog. Thanks again for the inspiration.

    • Larissa says

You are very kind to make me smile, Kelly. Thanks for the love!

  43. JoAnn Moran says

Love the basket. Would like an in-depth tutorial on lining.

    • Larissa says

Thank you, JoAnn. Each basket is different, but the general concept is a bottom with sides, so if you can measure those and leave wiggle room for attaching, you’ll be good to go.
