Succulent Planter from Broken Bird Feeder

A new day and a new repurposing project for you! Earlier this week, I showed you what I did with a curbside credenza and promised to show you a crafty project today. I am sort-of embarrassed to say it took me nearly a year to finally get this project done (that only took me an hour to do).  If you could be a fly on the wall in my home, you would know why. So…without further adieu, I am showing you how I created a faux succulent planter from a broken bird feeder. (drum roll please…)

The story goes that my mother gave me this gorgeous bird feeder with stained glass roof, which we used for a couple of years watching our feathered friends feast. However, one year a raccoon got ahold of it and pulled it down. tsk. He not only broke some of the glass, but also the metal frame. yikes!

When we were doing our patio makeover last fall, I wanted to use the feeder turned planter in my patio decor but couldn’t get it finished. I had already gutted it by removing the feeder part and the broken glass. My husband and I soldered it back together and rearranged the remaining glass. Here is where I started this time around…

…it still has life, right? My original plan was to plant live succulents inside it, just like I did my repurposed Easter cross. Since I was lacking time and not wanting to wasted funds on killing plants, I went with faux.

DIY TIME

First, I made adjustments to the feeder hanger holes with my drill so it could receive the new parts I was adding.

I decided to use a pool noodle as my plant base since it was the perfect diameter. Aren’t those things awesome for endless projects?

I cut a length of noodle and then assembled my supplies:

  1. Super Moss Instant Green Moss Mat
  2. faux succulent selection
  3. hot glue gun
  4. hot glue sticks
  5. screw driver
  6. scissors

I have a thing for moss balls, outdoor moss, and pretty much anything mossy, so this large moss mat was right up my alley. You get 2 sq. ft. in this package and I only need a corner of it for my project today. I can’t wait to show you what I’m going to do with the rest. tee hee.

NEXT STEPS

Simply roll out the mat and cut it to fit the pool noodle. Then, hot glued it in place.

I slide it into the feeder and begin to add my succulents by poking a hole with a screwdriver. Before attaching the succulents, I used hot glue to secure them in place.

After taking a minute to stick them all in, my succulent planter is done and ready to hang. Yay!

It looks perfect above my faux shipping crate table and helps make my patio feel more cozy.

Now, I know most anything can be turned into a succulent planter, so take a peek around your home and see if there’s something that you could use to create you own mini garden. It’s fun!
