Farmhouse Style Decor ~ How to add it to your home

You know I love me some farmhouse style decor. Do I live on a farm? No. Do I want to live on a farm? YES. Funny thing is I was born on a farm (and act like it too – ha!) and lived in rural life until I left the nest. So many of us adore the simplicity of farmhouse decor, but don’t live on a farm. However, we don’t have to wait for that “farm in the sky” to have it.  Whether it’s good ol’ fashioned farmhouse or modern farmhouse, you can get the look for less. Let me show you what I mean. (I have a video for you!)

Want to add farmhouse style decor to your home, but lack a big budget? It's easier than you think. Come see at Prodigal Pieces |

First, let me say that country living is in my bones and one day I will get there whether here or in heaven. God hasn’t seen fit to bless me with that opportunity yet, so I am making the most of my blessings.

Girl’s Bedroom Set Refreshed with Paint, Paper & Pulls

It’s always good to know when to pick your battles, right? For instance, I know that when I am on Craigslist I will find projects, and when I find projects, I will not be able to resist them. Then, that leads to overload in my workshop and me asking myself, “What did you do?!?” Solution: STAY OFF CRAIGSLIST. There. I said it. To validate my logic, let me show you what happens when I take a peek at Craigslist. See this? That is the result of looking for 5 minutes. Yup. Now, stay with me here as Mr. I and I will show you how it became a girl’s bedroom set.

Modern Farmhouse Chic Nighstand

Earlier this week in my table project post, I promised to show you a furniture makeover that one of my daughters had been working on. Miss E. has never had her time in the spotlight as that is not usually her style anyway. However, I felt the need to share this project for a couple of different reasons. I’d like to show you how she gave this outdated chest nightstand a modern farmhouse chic look. Plus, inspire you to do more.

My awesome parents are always on the lookout for project piece for me or my kids. They know that each time I get a free piece that I pass it along to one of them. You can imagine how excited they get when a new one comes along. To see their past work, you can check out these posts.

When my mom told me she had a small chest to work on, I decided it would be Miss E’s turn. She has done piece before, like this one she Read more

Repurposed Radio Cabinet turned Dollhouse

When you are eyeing something at the store or garage sale, does it speak to you? Not like, “Hey, look at me!”, but more like you see the potential that it has. I have always been drawn to antique radios ever since my parents had one in their home that had original parts and still worked. If you know me, then you know I love to tinker with mechanical things and they always drawn me in. Much like this one I found. I’d like to show you this repurposed radio cabinet and the fun it holds inside.

Unlike my last post, this was a sight-unseen purchase that I was pleased with. The owner delivered me this cabinet and another dresser I made over in this post. Happy camper, am I!

When I finally got to lay hands on this cabinet, I was so excited to see it in such awesome shape. I instantly said to myself, “no paint needed here..this wood is gorgeous!” Though it did have some wear and was mostly dirty, that didn’t stop me from Read more

Vintage Vanity with French Country Cottage Style

Damaged Veneer is Your Friend…Really

Are you one to shy away when you have a piece of furniture that has damaged veneer? I don’t blame you. Many a times I have run into a project that really had me ready to quit. Last week I showed you a chest of drawers and how I gave it a new look (on the left). This week, I’m going to show you how The Evil Twin got a makeover that gave a me a run for my money. Enter in this soon-to-be farmhouse empire dresser.

Distressed Dresser Farmhouse Makeover

Typically when I speak of a distressed dresser, you would think that I am referring to the effect I am using to create a finished product. In this instance, however, the term “distressed dresser” is referring to the state that this antique was in when it came into my possession. Pretty distressed, don’t you think?

When the previous owners contacted me to see if I had any interest in it, I was eager to see what it looked like in person. The best part is that they knew something like this was right up my alley. This tired piece showcases snaggle-tooth veneer, missing trim and accents, mismatched knobs…

Wooden Chest Made Farmhouse Chic

My thrifting adventures can surprise me sometimes and that’s what keeps me hungry for the hunt. Does that happen to you? I was out looking for one thing and then found this child’s wooden chest stuffed in the back. It is totally sporting the 1980’s vibe and was begging me to bring it home to revive it back to beauty.

The faux front was cute, but those awful plastic knobs were killing me. Overall, it was in really great shape and even had the inside bottom replaced at one time. Oh, and I know that this was a secret weapons retreat as inside was written, “Rex and Tim. Don’t touch. Weapons here.” Rex and Tim better watch out!

Vintage Mid Century Modern Mengel Chest of Drawers Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces |

Yell, SCORE! I live vicariously, can you tell? Of course I accepted this awesome gift sight unseen from some local peeps who knew I had a furniture fetish. This is a classic piece made by Mengel and has a design style that is out of this world. Seriously! If you don’t believe me, Google it. (that’s what we do nowadays, right?)

This is by far one of the heaviest, most solid pieces I’ve come across, but…(there’s always a but. Can I get an amen?) it needed some lovin’. Today is Themed Furniture Makeover Day where each month a group of bloggers get together and share our makeovers. Today’s theme is all about RED, WHITE, OR BLUE and you can see the girls’ projects below.

I thought this Mid Century Modern chest would be perfect for this month because it was begging to have that cherry wood drawn out in contrast with WHITE. Yessssss….

The chest had some pretty deep gouges to the top and side, and even one of the side panels had split. Oh BTW, the top two pulls are present, but I had removed them to give them a good polish. pssst!! they are solid brass!! SCORE!

The top I repaired with wood filler and my sander, but that split side panel was a bit tricky. I had to lay it on its side and have my husband’s assistance to muscle the panels together and then attached together from the inside. Good as new!

Since I couldn’t quite save the wood of the cabinet, I could not resist showcasing the gorgeous cherry wood of the drawer fronts. That’s when I decided to go the route of one of my favorite methods of paint and stain combo like I used in this Mid Century set or on these pieces.

My all-time favorite stain after the years is Early American Stain by RustOleum. We’ve used it in our master bedroom, bathroom, and on numerous projects like our Pottery Barn inspired trunk.

For the rest of the chest, I decided to go white. A flat white that I would finish in a RustOleum Matte poly finish as well.

The pulls were gorgeous, but needed some TLC, so I used my Bar Keepers Friend® to polish them up. Look at what was hiding in there!

After all is said and done, I am tickled with the updated look that stays true to the classic retro style.

My newly blooming peonies are the delight of my heart and I couldn’t help but use them in my staging along with the vintage print I found.

Oh, and that leggy lady on the side is a part of a pair of chairs I just found while thrifting. I wasn’t even furniture shopping and they were calling my name! Can you blame me? The other chair has a hole in the caning, so I’m not sure what I’ll be doing to them or if they will stay with me. Time will tell.
