DIY Winter Urn Made with Repurposed Materials

It’s not only fun to do trashure work myself (one man’s trash is another one’s treasure), but the best part is having a bunch of friends who love to do the same! Welcome to Trash to Treasure Tuesday where the second Tuesday of each month my blogger friends and I get together to bring you some junkin’ goodness. My project today is to show you how I took some repurposed materials and made them into a DIY winter urn. You’ll see my friend’s projects in a bit.

Urns Ready for Winter Makeover | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

What I was after was creating something that would last past Christmas and keep my home decorated for winter. I’m all for less work and more fun, so in order to do that I had to go faux. My mind was set on making use of all of the cast-off Christmas trees available this time of year. When I headed to the thrift store, I was so stoked to find Read more

Patriotic Bunting from Thrift Store Fabric

Do you ever say to yourself that you’re going to complete a project and yet, another year goes by? Then one day you finally pull up your boot straps and say, “No more excuses!!” My friends, I had been wanting to do this project for a couple of years now, but just couldn’t get it done for different reasons. I know, yada, yada, yada, but life happens, right? (like running a home business, homeschooling 6 kids, etc)

One reason was because our new baby threw a kink in the works when we had a NICU stay, the other was because I had nowhere to hang a patriotic bunting. Good reason, right? Last summer my husband was finally able to build the flower boxes for our home after the exterior got a facelift. That is, all except the front two. We didn’t get to complete the front set until this summer since we had to replace our windows last fall, and they had their debut a couple of weeks ago.

So here I am. Finally there is no excuse. With my coupon in hand, I headed to a local thrift store to snatch up some Independence Day goodness. (Yes, I even have coupons for the thrift store – ha!)

There was plenty of red, white, and blue fabric in the form of sheets, curtains, and remnants. Can you believe I was able to snag all that I needed plus tons more for less than $4? SCORE! I bought a king size sheet, a 12 foot long fabric remnant that looked like a tea stained tie-dye, and a few denim curtains that had been sun-faded (perfect for the time-worn effect I was after). Welcome Home Summer Tour with Balsam Hill - It's more than just Christmas trees! by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces

** Balsam Hill provided product for this post**

You may be saying to yourself, “Balsam Hill? I thought they were all about Christmas trees?” Though their primary focus is the Christmas season, Balsam Hill also has plenty of goodies for you to choose from for all seasons.

If you missed my sneak-peak video last week, I mentioned that my home is where I want my family to feel welcome, and is inviting to anyone who comes to my door. While I normally have planters full of herbs and such, this year, I wanted to create an environment that would last all year long.

Faux Wood Garage Door Tutorial

It has long since been my husband’s and my desire to give the exterior of our home an overdue makeover.  When we originally purchased our house we didn’t have a garage, but a carport with lattice as a wall on the one side.  A few years ago we walled in the garage and added a builder grade garage door with carriage windows. That suited us just fine and matched our scheme, but once we got to work adding a new color and stone veneer, that BIG white door just didn’t suit the rustic feel we were after.  I wanted a faux wood garage door, and I decided to DIM (Do It Myself). Here it is in its prep mode.

DIY Faux Wood Garage Door Tutorial by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.comI wanted some pizzazz, some curb appeal, some I-don’t-look-like-I-came-from-the-big-tool-store-type attention.  Mind you this was a vast improvement over no garage door which showcased our auto loveliness.

Since it is the norm for me to add texture to the pieces I paint with glazing for my shop, one day I thought to myself, “Why not the garage door?” So off I went to create a faux wood garage door.

Luckily our custom garage door we chose a few years ago already had a faux wood grain inlaid to the panels.  So with some paint, I went to work and made our garage door look like this…

Feeling the Autumn Love?

Has the autumn weather hit your area yet?  We are having an unusually warm October here in the midwest, and you can bet I’ll take it!!

The leaves are starting to fall, our garden is slowly going to sleep, and wood splitting is in full force.

Gotta love the scent of fresh split wood. I can feel the winter warmth already.

Seeing that pile just makes me want to start up a fire and grab a cup of cocoa.  Mmmmm….
And that doesn’t stop me from feeling like continuing to add more fall decorations. I had been wanting to do a corn husk wreath for some time and even had the husks sitting aside for a good month till I finally got to them.
Here’s what I came up with:

See what I mean?  Not a normal fall here.  That sun has been so bright and is always out – you won’t hear a lick of a complaint from me!

To make this wreath, I just hot-glued the corn husks (free) to my curbside find grapevine wreath (free – you wouldn’t believe how many people throw away perfectly good grapevine wreaths!), added a rusty crusty tart tin from a thrift store find ($.25), and a bit of jute webbing as a hanger (already had on hand from my rockers here and here).  Added a bit of hand painting, and… Voila!

I love its simplicity and welcoming feeling.

Even better is my favorite perennial, Autumn Joy, mixed with some Chrysanthemums.  Not to mention some gourds all atop a curbside find chair – perfect!  Can you believe I also got the autumn-colored chevron handmade curbside throw too? tsk.tsk.tsk.

Sigh…fall is here and I’m lovin’ every minute. (I may not be saying that after I’ve raked the yard 12 times and have blisters to prove it.. ahem).

How about you?  Still finding ways to incorporate autumn into your home?

Pin and share to inspire!
