Modern Dresser Makover ~ Mid Century Chic

I don’t know about you, but I’m super-excited today! Why? Well, today is my first post joining a wonderful group of ladies for Furniture Fixer Uppers. Each month we will be sharing our furniture makeovers to teach, to share, to inspire you. For this month, I’m sharing this vintage piece that is going to get a modern dresser makeover. PLUS, I have a giveaway for you. Yay!

Mid Century Modern Dresser Found at Thrift Store by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

True story, I walked into the thrift store to find only some sweaters to repurpose for my sheep (see here). I pinky swear. As I was heading to the back of the store, the shop lady was on the phone talking to one of the owners telling them that yes, this particular dresser was STILL there and she was to get rid of it. ahem. I halted my tracks and said, “I’ll take it.” Any sane person would have done the same thing.

My peeps, when this piece is sitting there covered in #trashure, falling apart and being dismissed, we must Read more

Mid Century Modern Dresser Makeover

To have a creative mind is fun. I love to work with most any kind of medium and it just so happens that furniture has become my most popular at this point. When I find a piece of furniture it tends to speak to me from the moment we meet. Sometimes that isn’t always the case because it can be shy and won’t “speak” to me for a bit , but with this Mid Century Modern dresser I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

This long beautiful piece of furniture had not been cared for and had a good amount of damage and wear to the top.

It had some sort of star-shaped candle that had melted/burned into the top as well as hot pink marker and some other goodies.

The drawer fronts had holes made in them by an insect or someone having fun with a tack, but they were sound enough. However, when I pulled out a couple of the drawers they fell apart at my feet. Nothing a little wood glue, wood filler, and clamps couldn’t solve though.

After I got all the pieces glued, everything filled and repaired with the wood filler, I got out my favorite sander and went crazy on that thing. This Mid Century Modern dresser was going to shine again if I had anything to say about it.

As much as I had hoped, sanding does not remove chemical stains, so I used my go-to Kilz stain blocker as my base coat. If you are familiar with my past work, you know I am drawn to the MCM lines and how fun it is to see them come to a modern state. I’ve done oodles of chests, dressers, tables, and credenzas. Take a peek at my projects to see. This time around, however, I am using a new-to-me paint line.

Meet Dixie Belle Paint, a chalk mineral paint. When I was asked to give a review of their product they asked me to choose some colors and this set looked promising to me. Check out the fun names: Hurricane Gray, Apricot, and Fluff. They also sent me some other goodies that I will make use of at a later time.

Mind you, I hadn’t picked out the piece of furniture yet, but knew I could make use of these in some sort of fashion. It wasn’t until I got this Mid Century Modern dresser that I knew I wanted to use all three. Yep.

Since the damage to the top deemed it paint-worthy, I used the Hurricane Gray for the cabinet. The other two colors would come into play on the drawer fronts. I got out my FrogTape and got jiggy with it. hee hee hee.

The other drawers were refinished using Provincial Stain by Rustoleum – the same stain I used on my fireplace makeover. You know I had to keep wood wherever I could. tsk.

Last, but not least, were the drawer pulls. These babies were solid brass, so no paint for them. Instead, I whip out my handy dandy Bar Keeper’s Friend to get them a cleaning like none other.

TIP: To find out if something is brass, use a magnet. If magnetic, not brass, if it doesn’t stick, you have winner! (psst…I carry a magnet with me at all times because it works on silver too) Every good junker or picker needs to be ready!!

I love this stuff. So easy to use and instant results in a few minutes and it’s so affordable!

Once all my paint and cleaning were cured and dried, I added a Dixie Belle topcoat to give it longevity. Love that it’s called Gator Hide – “repels water not gators” – ha!

Ready for the reveal? Let me introduce you to this once forlorn gal, gone modern chic.

I am so pleased with the results. Let me just say that I have used dozens of paints over the years and I was impressed with the coverage, ease of use, and overall experience I had with the Dixie Belle paints.

Factory Finish with a Paint Sprayer

There are so many little things that delight my heart, truly. It can be as simple as my kids bringing me a sweet wildflower bouquet, a slice of homemade strawberry pie, or spending time in God’s word. Another one of my delights is sharing projects with you so I can empower you to try projects yourself. Who knows, maybe I’ll even help you learn something new. Today, I thought I would share a furniture makeover that will help you achieve a factory finish in a day. Sounds easy enough, right?

Dixie Dresser Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

This Mid Century Modern dresser (or credenza) was made by Dixie back in the Brady Bunch days. The Dixie line of furniture has stood the test of time and and still a coveted piece of furniture. This isn’t my first makeover of a Dixie piece, you see my French provincial set in this post.

I found this piece for today in almost mint condition, but somewhere along the line Read more

Trashure is my word for treasure found in the trash (aka. one man’s trash is another woman’s treasure). Today is Trash to Treasure Tuesday! As I showed you last week, this Mid Century Modern credenza is going to get a new life as an entertainment console. Woot! Just wait until you see what my blogger friends have for you too.

Curbside Mid Century Modern Crredenza Before Entertainment Console | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

Here’s the story behind my find. I was being a good girl and not even going out junkin’ during our city clean-up. Why, you ask? Because my garage shop is a wreck from our remodel and I have NO ROOM! Plus, I only like to keep on hand what I can work on in the next few weeks.

Anyhoo, it was our quadrant’s time to set out trash and I promised myself that if I saw something en route from my house to errands that I was allowed to pick it up. Only catch was it had to be AFTER all the pickers had already gone through. Otherwise, all was off-limits. So here’s a sampling of some of what I found in one day…eep! Read more

Mid Century Modern Chest ~ White and Wood

What would you say if someone offered you this Mid Century Modern chest for free?

Vintage Mid Century Modern Mengel Chest of Drawers Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

Yell, SCORE! I live vicariously, can you tell? Of course I accepted this awesome gift sight unseen from some local peeps who knew I had a furniture fetish. This is a classic piece made by Mengel and has a design style that is out of this world. Seriously! If you don’t believe me, Google it. (that’s what we do nowadays, right?)

This is by far one of the heaviest, most solid pieces I’ve come across, but…(there’s always a but. Can I get an amen?) it needed some lovin’. Today is Themed Furniture Makeover Day where each month a group of bloggers get together and share our makeovers. Today’s theme is all about RED, WHITE, OR BLUE and you can see the girls’ projects below.

I thought this Mid Century Modern chest would be perfect for this month because it was begging to have that cherry wood drawn out in contrast with WHITE. Yessssss….

The chest had some pretty deep gouges to the top and side, and even one of the side panels had split. Oh BTW, the top two pulls are present, but I had removed them to give them a good polish. pssst!! they are solid brass!! SCORE!

Damage Top of Mid Century Modern Mengel Chest of Drawers | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

The top I repaired with wood filler and my sander, but that split side panel was a bit tricky. I had to lay it on its side and have my husband’s assistance to muscle the panels together and then attached together from the inside. Good as new!

Since I couldn’t quite save the wood of the cabinet, I could not resist showcasing the gorgeous cherry wood of the drawer fronts. That’s when I decided to go the route of one of my favorite methods of paint and stain combo like I used in this Mid Century set or on these pieces.

My all-time favorite stain after the years is Early American Stain by RustOleum. We’ve used it in our master bedroom, bathroom, and on numerous projects like our Pottery Barn inspired trunk.

For the rest of the chest, I decided to go white. A flat white that I would finish in a RustOleum Matte poly finish as well.

The pulls were gorgeous, but needed some TLC, so I used my Bar Keepers Friend® to polish them up. Look at what was hiding in there!

After all is said and done, I am tickled with the updated look that stays true to the classic retro style.

My newly blooming peonies are the delight of my heart and I couldn’t help but use them in my staging along with the vintage print I found.

Oh, and that leggy lady on the side is a part of a pair of chairs I just found while thrifting. I wasn’t even furniture shopping and they were calling my name! Can you blame me? The other chair has a hole in the caning, so I’m not sure what I’ll be doing to them or if they will stay with me. Time will tell.

Last week, I showed you this Mid Century Modern chest of drawers I found on Craigslist. It just needed a little TLC and a pop of color to bring it up-to-date.

I also mentioned that it wasn’t until after we got the chest home that I saw the owner had just listed the matching credenza. Umm…duh. (sorry. I hate when my kids use that word, but this situation perfectly fits it)Why he didn’t tell us he would be selling it too, I’ll never know, but we went back on the road again to pick up this classic Mid Century Bassett piece.

Mid Century Modern Score at Goodwill

Like most, pickers, I have rounds I like to make to various places, like the flea markets, thrift stores, estate sales, etc.  This one particular day, I was on the hunt for a chair to pair with a desk.  I had absolutely NO intention of bringing home more furniture.  My house has been stashed to the brim for too long, and I was on my last couple of pieces to finish before I could do some major makeovers in my shop.

I promised you this year I would share more of how God is working in my life, and I can’t help but share this providential story with you!

My kids and I went into Goodwill this time, and headed straight for the furniture section because I needed to get back home.  I stopped dead in my tracks and whispered to myself, “Oh no.”

Here is what I saw.  (I make no apologies for the fuzzy photos because it’s ridiculously hard to take a photo while holding on to a squirmy baby in winter clothes – ha!)

A MCM {Mid Century Modern} Makeover

My style is typically French farmhouse / shabby chic / cottage, but I seriously dig the lines and design of the Mid Century Modern era, like the console and Brasilia chest of drawers I’ve done. When my kids are watching flashback episodes of The Brady Bunch or Benji, etc. I’m gazing at the wonderful furniture that is featured.  Do you do that?

While doing my typically fun searches on Craigslist I came across this funkified bedroom dresser set.
Vintage MCM Mid Century Modern Dresser Set from Craigslist Gets Blue Makeover by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
Apparently, someone was cleaning out an estate from a family member and wanted to “get rid of this ugly furniture” – translated in junker lingo, “SCORE!”.

I love to hear that type of statement coming from a seller and I try to put on my poker face and play the game.  Most times I feel bad that they don’t know what gem they have, but in the end it’s win-win.  They get rid of their “junk” and I get to play.  tee hee.
Vintage MCM Mid Century Modern Dresser Set from Craigslist Gets Blue Makeover by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
This set was in excellent shape, but, of course, the top surfaces had the most wear.  All the dove-tailed drawers worked smoothly and were in great condition.

I grabbed my handy orbital sander and went to town.  The top of the console dresser was so worn that the finish came off so easily.
Vintage MCM Mid Century Modern Dresser Set from Craigslist Gets Blue Makeover by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
Funny note: A giant headache with a nine drawer dresser is figuring out where the drawers are supposed to go after you take them out.  This previous owner has a genius moment and numbered the frame and drawers at some point. THANK YOU!

Since the drawers were in excellent shape, I decided to sand and refinish them with a dark stain and poly topcoat.  I found the manufacturer stamp on the bottom that read, “Japan, June 8, 1961”, another part of the story.
Vintage MCM Mid Century Modern Dresser Set from Craigslist Gets Blue Makeover by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
One of my favorite aspects of the MCM style is the lack of drawer pulls. Innovation and creativity were used to make these pieces function with ease. This set was no different with the inset places for a finger-grab hold.  To draw attention to that detail, I painted with a white semi-gloss.

For the cabinet, I went to my handy dandy stash and pulled another favorite “seconds” paint of mine. Can’t beat paying $7 for a gorgeous blue semi-gloss from Home Depot.  I love it…sigh.

Not sure what could be better about this set than the offset mirror.  It’s funky, different, unique and I’m all about that.
Vintage MCM Mid Century Modern Dresser Set from Craigslist Gets Blue Makeover by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
Since this is a set, I wanted to stage them together and lack the wall space to do so (I’m working on a remedy for that!).  I originally set them in front of my garage as I’ve done with other pieces, but it just didn’t do them any justice.  So, I decided to play in Photoshop and create a faux setting.  I’m selling this set in my Etsy shop and wanted to present them in a clean way as the pieces themselves are a clean design.
