Teen Boys’ Room Reveal

Vintage industrial style is hot and currently trending, especially for teen boys. Who can deny the funky fun of metals mixed with woods, and the fact that texture abounds? If you know me, you know I love vintage and tend to have an industrial twist in my home. It’s rubbed off on my oldest son and was our focus for our teen boys’ room makeover.

To catch you up to speed, take a minute and head over to see all the BEFORE goodness of their bedroom. I’ve got fun details over there and will help you get the full scope of this project.

Boys Room Before | prodigalpieces.com

We’ve gone from a nature-inspired room to a factory-inspired hangout that is full of metal, wood, and oodles of texture. Come on in and take the tour!

THE REVEAL

We are so pleased with out bright and fresh our boys’ room has become. From the ceiling to the floor, it’s amazing what a little paint and DIY can do for a space. The Universal Gray by Glidden was a perfect match for our design, and the contrast against the new plank ceiling is perfect.

The once candy-apple red furniture now has a rustic feel after I gave it a faux wood look and added those awesome pulls by Hickory Hardware. Likweise, hard to tell that dresser is part wood and part particle board, isn’t it?

DIY DECOR

We had fun hunting down vintage items from flea markets, garage sales, and thrift stores. I’m sure we’ll continue to change it up as we run into another sweet piece.

Our son’s desk is a poplar board with two brackets. Simple and functional, and all it needs for an updating is a new stain treatment of Espresso by Minwax, Also, I add a black paint to the brackets. The medical stool is from a garage sale and I add new upholstery it with a scrap piece of plaid wool I have in my stash.

A nice storage and decorative piece is this wire pocket shelf found at Decor Steals for my teen boys’ room makeover. It has my husband’s great-grandfather’s license plate and a rusty bolt from my junky stash on top.

BUNKS

The bunk bed was a boring dark pine before. However, I am so happy with how my vision of making look like an industrial rack is real. I explained in the before post how I used a gray for the based and then used my glazing method to create a grunge look with chocolate metallic paint.

There wasn’t any way I was going to hand-paint this entire thing, so I am beyond excited I can use my HomeRight Finish Max paint sprayer to knock this bad boy out in a few hours.

Additionally, updating the boys’ yellow down comforters is easy by finding a matching set of organic Pottery Barn duvet covers on eBay. I love the plaid and it adds a touch of cozy to the industrial feel of the room.

Faux Brick Wallpaper in Teen Boys' Room Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

Our thrifted wire velocipede was painted a flat black and adds that classic industrial feel, and those charcoal art prints I found inside a custom dresser I worked on were mounted on some chipboard I painted black.

FAUX REAL

How about the mural? Seriously, the faux brick really creates texture in the room. The best part is that it is removable and repositionable. eep!  When we’re ready to remove it, it comes off without a scraper and oodles of angry peeling. However, I am NOT a fan of wallpaper in most instances, but I didn’t shy away from giving it a go in here. This company has every mural you could ever think of available and they’re customizable too!

The nightstand was made from a plant stand and a remnant table top from my son’s table makeover. It’s rustic, industrial, and only costs a dollar to make! I updated their lamps with Rustoleum Brushed Nickel spray paint, same as we did in our bathroom remodel. You just can’t get any easier than that, right?

WINDOWS

Their window were given a similar trim treatment to how we trimmed out our windows in our master bedroom. I love the wide boards and the added pipe curtain rods are funky fun. The curtains I made from blackout fabric and a simple cotton. I wanted them to look like an old man’s shirt.

Also, we removed the ugly pressed board bookcase and added a few simple pine shelves stained in a Minwax Espresso, same as their desk. Storage and style are what we’re after.

Antique Radio as Decor in Teen Boys' Room Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

For our teen boys’ room fun, the faux metal directional arrow is  cut from a piece of chipboard. Using my jigsaw, I cut and then hot-glued the back of a desk calendar cut into strips around the edge.

TUNE IN

Also, I found that antique Victor Radio shell on Craigslist. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it at first, but then it hit me. First, I covered the empty front with a bit of caning I had from roll my dad gave me. Painted it brown and glazed it with an antique gold. Then, I replaced the missing knobs with a couple from my hardware stash, and added a faux dial to the face. You can see the before HERE.

I said to myself, “What could be more cool than a secret compartment for them to hide their treasures?”

Hidden Storage in Antique Radio | prodigalpieces.com

The radio hangs with door hinges and has a magnetic closure to keep it flush to the wall. My guys LOVE it. ♥

We are delighted with how well the fixture from eFaucets accents the style we were going for. Isn’t it sweet?

Our teen boys’ room project is complete. Wahoo! We’re so happy to have been able to give our boys a new space to enjoy for a few more years. I can’t believe one day they won’t be here. sniff, sniff.

Last, I hope you’ve enjoy the tour and find it inspiring to try to create your own space. Using found treasures and DIY elbow grease can really give a room a facelift.

COMPLETELY amazing, as usual! I love every detail. Your rooms are always proof to any doubters that great design can be accomplished on a budget. 🙂 Perfect!

    • Larissa says

Thanks so much, Kimm! It’s funny that even if we didn’t have to be budget-conscious, I would still be thrifty. hee hee. 😉

  2. Rachel says

Spectacular, Larissa! So much hard work but so worth it. It is an awesome space. I wish you lived closer to me. I think we would get along fabulously! 🙂 But, alas, I’m in NW Ohio, not NE. You’re truly inspiring in more ways than one! Keep up the great work! ~Rachel @ The Olde Windmill Farmhouse

    • Larissa says

Yay! So happy to hear you like it. It was fun to work in their room and make it “new”. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Cecilia says

Wow, Larissa, that turned out great! I know I’d read the brick was faux but it looks so real! There’s so much to comment on…the light fixture, the curtain and rod, the beds, desk, shelving! All wonderful. But the secret compartment is the very creative! I bet they do love it. This is a great room! (And they do grow up too fast! Just saying. 🙂 )

    • Larissa says

Yes, too fast. I have a hard time believing I’m a mother of a teenager – just isn’t possible. Thank you for the compliment and love!

  4. Doris Myrick says

Love this room! Love your projects! Thanks!

  5. Mary-In the boondocks says

Larissa, the first thing that hit me was the brick wall. It l ooks fantastic – real!! The bed is so cool very industrial and the rest of the room fits right in with this vibe. A really wonderful job. I really like the duvet covers they pull the whole room together. Your boys must be thrilled and what about that secret compartment.

    • Larissa says

The wall is a fun accent, isn’t it? The best part about doing a room is getting to have that treasure hunt that inspires the space. A little bit of this, and a little bit of that, and then you’re room is done! 😉

  6. Sherry Fram says

Wow! Great room! Love all the industrial details! Love that light fixture and the radio cabinet turned secret compartment! Great job and lucky boys!

    • Larissa says

Thank you, Sherry! It was fun to redo their space and to see them proud of it too.

  7. Marie from The Interior Frugalista says

I KNEW your boy’s room makeover would be none less than magazine worthy Larissa! Woweeeeeee. The bunk bed makeover is AWESOME! The brick mural – AHMAZING and so realistic looking! That hidden treasure compartment behind the radio cabinet is CLEVER! Love the light fixture. The industrial stool…I could go on and on and on. I have no doubt that this space WILL be featured in print.

    • Larissa says

Seriously, Marie, you made my day! We work so hard to make our house a fun and inviting place to be and to hear how it is appreciated is the icing on the cake. Thank you!!

    • Larissa says

Thank you, Susan! Yes, they have already commissioned it with a mess. 🙂

  8. Christy says

Do you have a tutorial on your faux wood look you did on the boys’ dresser?
I have a customer wanting some shutters stripped and stained. The problem is, the stripper won’t touch the bottom layer of paint. Maybe it’s chalk paint, I don’t know, but it’s not coming off!

  9. Tamara Mendez says

Will you please provide exactly which faux brick wal paper that you chose for your boy’s room? I LOVE it!

    • Larissa says

I honestly can’t remember the name of it and haven’t been able to remember the number. It was something like antique brick? Sorry I’m not much help. 🙁

  10. Ki says

Lady, you continue to amaze me! You have such a good eye and wonderful skills. I have been seeing lots of shops popping up in my area for me to check out.
You have inspired me to start doing……
    I’ll keep you informed. Thanks!!!

    • Larissa says

Ooh…that sounds like fun, Ki. Exploring new places keeps the imagination running. Have fun!

  11. Cheryl b. says

You got me with the brick wall.the bed the ceiling .The small details.this is fabulous

    • Larissa says

We had such big fun in this rather small space. Thank you!

  12. Beth Bell says

Amazing room–love all the textures! One question. You are so adept at spray painting, is it just too messy to spray pain walls? I see professional painters on TV spray painting walls all the time. You are talented enough…is it just not worth it?

    • Larissa says

Thanks! It’s more time involved to tape off and prep than to just roll and cut in. This was a small space so in this instance I roll with it. 😀
