Rustic Chic Finish ~ Themed Makeover

I think there should be sweet music playing when I write for our Themed Furniture Makeover Day because it is my favorite time each month. Do you blame me? I don’t have local friends and neighbors, even family, who enjoy doing what I do, so having some peeps to share in the goodness is fantastic! Not only that, but they challenge me as well. Be sure to stop by the linkup at the bottom and check out all their hard work. This month’s project was all about RUSTIC furniture. tsk. Now you know that got me excited. Yay! Love me some rustic chic. ♥

A few weeks ago I was on Craigslist (like I’m never on there – right.), and was relisting some of my items. I make a habit of always checking the free section because you just never know. Here is what I saw when I clicked…

Rustic Chic Finish by Prodigal Pieces - You can create this look with paint and stain www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces

Seriously, my jaw hit my desk and I grabbed my phone lightning-fast. (You know, I seriously wish I could see what my face looks like when this stuff happens. I’d laugh my rear off!) Missing a few drawers, casters, and mirrors, but it’s already stripped!!

Story goes like this: Lady tries to strip this set herself and finds out she took on more than she could handle. She damages it beyond repair (in her mind) and lets it sit in a friends’ barn (Man) for over a year. Man asks her what she’d like done with it because he’d like it gone, to which she replies, burn it. {{gasp}} Read more

Pottery Barn Trunk Knock-Off {Themed Makeover}

Nothing like a new challenge and build to get the blood flowing. Today is Themed Furniture Makeover Day, and I have a sweet project for you! This month’s theme is “Pottery Barn Inspired” – it could be anything furniture-related either being transformed or newly created in Pottery Barn style.  I wanted to go DIY mode this time around because I’ve had the itch to get outside (now that it’s above 20 degrees) and use my tools. yesssss….

While perusing the Pottery Barn website for the first time, I was drawn to their rustic trunks. I honestly don’t care for new looking furniture because I want it to have a story. This Josefa Trunk caught my eye with its rustic appeal. I like the red version, but the white….swoon!

Pottery Barn recreated this trunk based on a similar one they had found in an antique store. I love the character it has along with its function. As a mom of 6, almost all my furniture has to perform a function, it cannot just be pretty, right? Maybe one day I’ll be one of those grandmas with white carpet, coffee tables for the grandkids to finger up, and running around with a dust buster sucking up all the crumbs….I’ll love it!

So off to Home Depot we go, and with kids in tow it’s always a fun time. Read more

Vintage Feed Sack Chair {Themed Makeover Day}

Sometimes my projects are in my head and sound good to me, but I never quite know how they’re going to turn out.  It’s sort of fun that way, especially when it all gels together.  Here’s is one of those types of projects. Meet my feed sack chair."Vintage

Want the full story? Let’s go back to the beginning.
A couple of weeks ago, I had my four girls with me and we were headed to pick up our weekly milk supply from a local farmer and then headed on to a flea market.  We were all excited to find treasures that day.

Down the back country road we headed to get our milk, and then I spotted a “Garage Sale” sign.  Uh oh. I don’t stop at every one of these (though I would if I could), but I knew since this was off the beaten path there could possibly be a steal.  When driving with a 6 mo. old baby, you have only a limited amount of non-fuss time and I really didn’t know if I should stop.  It could mean diaper changes, nursing time…you know the routine.  Plus, my girls didn’t want to miss out on the flea market.  What to do, what to do?!

Truth be told, it’s actually a bench from an organ we used to own. Once upon a time we were given a free organ and had a blast using it along with our  antique upright grand piano you see above. The organ eventually Read more

Farmhouse Cupboard Makeover ~ Add a Wall Cleat

Sometimes while shopping, do you ever see something and say, “I have to have it.” You may not need it, but you know it shouldn’t be left behind because it has potential. If you know me then you know this is my life story. ahem. Earlier this week in our Trash to Treasure Tuesday, I said I would be tackling this thrift store cupboard and today’s the day. I’d like to show you what I saw when I spied it in the store, and watch how it becomes a farmhouse cupboard.

At first glance I thought it was a basic wall cupboard, but upon closer inspection, I found that it had once been some sort of add-on to other cabinets. It has beads in the shelves for displaying plates, even on top.

Modern Chic Makeover for Art Deco Nightstand

My kids are with me in my daily grind and I love to include them in my projects as well as giving them projects of their own. One day that won’t be with me and I want them to have wings to fly. I feel that learning a trade, along with a scholarly education in homeschool, is crucial. My efforts to broaden their horizons includes working alongside me as the eagerly request to learn. Today, my oldest daughter, Miss C, is getting to work on this Art Deco nightstand by giving it a modern chic makeover.

Whenever I receive a piece of furniture for free, I let one of my six kids have at it. Both of my parents have generously given various items for them to work on, and this time my father gave us this piece to revive along with a dressing table. I am working on the dressing table and my daughter gets to revive this rough-looking nightstand.

Turns out this is a piece made by Virginia House Furniture right here in the U.S. and this company is still making handmade furniture today. Isn’t that cool?

Vintage Chest Gets Modern Makeover

Each month I have fun participating in our Themed Furniture Makeovers, and this time around I’m letting my oldest son step up to the plate with his latest project piece, a vintage chest of drawers. AND…I have an awesome giveaway for you!

Themed Furniture Makeover | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

I totally encourage my six children to join me in my work and they are always chomping at the bit to have some fun with paint and learn a trade. When I went to pick up the primitive cupboard I just used to show you how to update old wood with stain, the lady also offered us this vintage chest. My furniture lovin’ self could have taken it as my own, but I offered it to my son and he chose to purchase it. (he knows to bring his wallet along when mama is on an adventure. hee hee)

Top 10 Makeovers of 2015

As this past year flashes by and we are already a few days into 2016, I wanted to take a minute to look at my year in review and share my Top 10 Makeovers of 2015. Fun, right? It is amazing to see God working in my life and of my family. I want to share the blessings with you and offer you a surprise for helping me out with a little something later on.

Let’s get this party started!!

Top 10 Makeovers of 2015 | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

Crazy as this sounds, my #1 top viewed post of 2015 was not a makeover, but a tip. Yep, a last-minute, grab-my-camera, and why-not-share-my-quirky-habit type of post. My “Natural Ant Control with Grits” post blew up and was by far number one. I guess I’m not the only one with the pesky little critters each spring.

Stop the Ants! Natural Ant Control Using GRITS | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces

A bit of controversy arose about my post and several naysayers appeared, but I tell ya, it works. Whether it kills them or just feeds them so they don’t come in…I don’t care. I like ants, just not in my home, right?

The #2 post was none other than Read more
