Buffet Makeover ~ Glazing Technique

Are you ready for some fun? A healthy debate is always good, especially in family. My oldest son, Mr. I and I both had vintage buffets to work on and I challenged him to a Battle of the Buffets. Loser makes all! That means the loser makes a dessert of choice for the winner. mwahahaha!! First, to get us started we’ll begin with this buffet makeover. Let’s get our DIY on!

Battle of the Buffets by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

Mr I. is no newbie to this game, so I have my work cut out for me. You can see his past work in his own makeovers HERE. Seriously, it’s hard for me to believe that not only am I a mom to a teenager, but he’s already out-growing me. I’m not short at 5’10”!

Nevertheless, he is still my baby and I love him and his 5 siblings with all my heart.

WE BEGIN

Okay, shall we get at it? Enter in the first contestant…

Buffet Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

This leggy beauty is gorgeous in design, has ample uses as an intended buffet, entry console, or even an entertainment stand. However, at some point it succumbed to a chemical mess that stained the top and missing chunks of veneer on the sides.

First, just to make sure the top was a no-go, I sanded it down with my sander and found what I hoped I wouldn’t – the stains were there to stay. Bummer!

TIME FOR PAINT

Onward we go…  First, since my alternative was to give this piece a fresh new look, I started out with this caramel colored paint I first used on my faux wood garage door makeover.

Then, when I got to the legs, I switch to different because it totally makes painting spindles and turnings a breeze. No need to flip the brush in a thousand different angles to get coverage. I love it!

Next, once I got two coats of the color on, it was time to create some depth to this piece and draw out all those gorgeous details. Also, like I’ve shown you in all these posts, I am using my glazing technique to wash the buffet with a white paint, then wipe off.

THE REVEAL

Last, when everything was cured, I added a protective layer of my handmade furniture wax. It gives it a soft glow that I just adore.

VERY cool white wash effect on the buffet! Isn’t it fun to take neglected pieces of furniture and turn them into happy, pretty things again? Great job!!!

  7. Brandi Bryant says

I love this. You are so talented. The first thing I would paint is an old hutch my aunt gave me. Thanks for the giveaway.

    • Larissa says

Woot! Thanks for the love, Brandi. Sounds like a great project for these brushes.

  8. Jewell Styles says

Love the whitewashed effect! I have a small antique table that my son gave me. I would do the whitewash on it using the Zibra brushes. Anxious to see your son’s makeover.

  9. Elaine says

What a gorgeous buffet. I love how the glazing brought out the details.

  10. DANELLE FULLER says

I’m looking forward to seeing what your son does with his buffet.

  12. Cecilia says

I love the glazing! It turned out great. As for what I’d paint I have An old chair – I don’t care for the first paint job I gave it, so I want to redo it!

  13. Kim says

Ni:ely done. The glazing really pops the details. Can’t wait to see Mr. I’s results. Watch out, Mama…you may have some major competition. 😀

  14. Robin says

I love everything you come up with, Larissa! In fact, I was at the recycling center the other day and picked up a lovely pine cupboard (one runner missing from a drawer but otherwise in great shape) AND there was a VW round medallion tied to the fence just waiting for someone to claim it! The young man said it had been sitting there for years and no one had ever asked for it! lol… I thought of BEEP (In fact I made then log onto the internet so I could show them BEEP lol). I would definitely work on this new pine cupboard if I won the Zibra paint brushes! Fingers crossed! Can’t wait to see what your son has done with his buffet!

    • Larissa says

Awesome score for you and what fun!! Love that you saw something that inspired you and you passed on the love. 🙂

  15. Donna Marchlewski says

I would LOVE the round brush to paint a spindle leg table ?

  16. Carole says

This is beautiful! I do love the glazing effect. My son and I are working on a Duncan Phyfe-ish dining table right now with lot o detail in he legs. That round brush looks like just the ting I need to get in all that detail.

    • Larissa says

Thank you, Carole. Sounds like the perfect project piece.

  17. Brenda Penton says

Ohh this is gorgeous. I’d like to use them to redo an old dresser I have.

  18. Becky says

Fantastic! I think you’re a winner already! (With 7 boys of my own, I believe we moms need to stick together, haha!) That caramel color gives me a heart attack every time I see you use it (OK, so maybe that’s only twice?), but WOW!!! Once you glaze, you’ve got a different animal! I love the muted tones here!
I love my brush I bought from you too!!! Reviews coming up! The first thing I’d paint (next, haha)? Doors and trim for my new room! …And some chairs too. I have projects coming out my ears! Bring on the brushes!!

    • Larissa says

hee hee hee…yes!! You can imagine what my neighbors thought when I stared out my garage door. Even the neighborhood kids had something to say. Sounds like you are a kindred spirit.

  19. Jessica says

Looking forward to seeing the next one!

  20. Jessica says

Oh, I don’t think I left an entry for the contest! I’d paint my son’s dresser… I think I say that every time I enter because we haven’t gotten to it yet.

  21. Linda says

Ooh!! I love the new look!! I am looking forward to se your son’s as well!
I have a dining table and chairs to get done! Also a long dresser I would like to make into a coffe/tea bar!
    Thanks for the ideas!!

    • Larissa says

Wonderful!! Thank you. Those sets can be a challenge, but the right brushes make it a breeze.

  22. Sandi Jones says

Beautiful! I’m still trying to master glazing. Maybe Zibra brushes would help. I will tell you I have a soft spot for Art Deco. Based on his way earlier work, you will have a worthy competitor. I look forward to your posts every week week. Keep up the good work!

    • Larissa says

Thanks! It is fun to experiment with it for sure. Yes, any era is good with me, these just happened to find us. 😉 Mr. I does amazing work.

  23. Rhonda Nottingham says

Love those buffets. So many uses.

  24. Mary West says

I’m not exactly sure what would be the first thing I would paint. I’m really hoping that we make a new coffee table soon so that’s what I would love to paint! I think it’s really great that you and your son are doing this together!

    • Larissa says

Those are so handy to have, so I get it. Thanks for the love, Mary! 😀

  25. Laura Werley says

The white glazing really highlighted all the gorgeous details of the buffet and the blue interior is fabulous. Your son looks so much like you and seems to have gotten your DIY skills too. If I won I would paint a fabulous buffet similar to yours that I have in my garage just waiting for inspiration and good brushes to begin.

    • Larissa says

I was having such fun bringing it out. Thank you, Laura. He does have many gifts and glad he is willing to try. Sounds like you are a kindred spirit.

  26. Tara says

This is one of my favorite pieces you’ve done! Who would have thought that the glaze would make it turn out so beautiful?!? Awesome work!

    • Larissa says

What a treat to hear. Thank you, Tara! That color is awful alone, but with glazing it really pops!

  27. Sherry Fram says

Love the buffet & the pop of color inside. My favorite part is how the glaze brings out all the detail! Mr. I will have to bring his A game to top that!!
I need to redo my dining table. It is all scratched up & needs some paint! I was thinking maybe a dark top with bright blue base. Those brushes would do the trick!

    • Larissa says

I had fun and am so excited to share. Thank you, Sherry! He’s having fun and and we can’t wait to show you. I knew you would have blue somewhere! 😉

  28. Anya Mathis says

Love how it turned out! I’d paint this little ugly 1990s shelf I found at a thrift shop. It has and elk etched into a mirror and that mini railing that was on everything! Those will be gone. But it totally has potential! It’s going to be super cute!

  29. Jolinda says

I love all the detail on this piece and the glazing was a perfect highlight for this piece. I may have to try this, I love it.

  30. Kimberly says

Love the makeover! The only negative is that I thought I would get the side-by-side comparison today 🙂 . Can’t wait!
I’d love to try out those brushes on my curio cabinet.

  31. candy kratzer wenzel says

I have a 1970’s china cabinet that I totally dislike that I have been putting off because I have no idea what to do with it. My mom gave it to me a few years ago and she is sentimental and wants me to keep it. I love reading your posts because they give me inspiration that I can turn this ugly thing possibly into something my style and color.

    • Larissa says

It’s amazing what paint can do! (and the right brushes 😉 ) I’m delighted to hear you are willing to try.

  32. Rachel C. says

Beautiful! I love the turquoise interior!

  33. Mary says

I absolutely love that effect of the carmel color with the lighter glaze on top. It is so warm and beautiful and actually makes me hungry!

  34. Debra Wise says

Love the whitewashed look and can’t wait to see what your son does. Would use the brushes on a table I want to paint so would love to win.

    • Larissa says

It’s fun to do. Thanks, Debra! He’s gaming up as we speak. Woot!

  35. Rebecca Drake says

I love your Buffett. Can’t wait to see the next one.
I would paint my kitchen table. thanks for e giveaway!

  36. Renee says

Beautiful job on the buffet! I love the lining in the inside! The first thing I would do with the brushes is an old 1970’s stereo that is in our sunroom that has wonderful sounds but it’s looks need an update. The second think I would tackle would be my kitchen cupboards!

    • Larissa says

Wonderful to hear. Thank you! Those are fun to redo to bring them up to date.

  37. Karen Sweitzer says

Love your makeover. I have several makeovers that need to be done, first being a large wardrobe that now has shelves inside. Also, my sister gave me a large mule chest. . .that needs to be painted and moved to the house. Your paintbrushes would come in MIGHTY HANDY!!

  38. Jeane Gallo says

Never in a million years would I think you could get such a beautiful result with that yellow/orange paint! I have some old tables that need some love. The paintbrushes would be perfect for that makeover.

    • Larissa says

hahaha…it is ugly at first, isn’t it? It’s such an awesome base though. 😉

  39. Melanie says

Dueling buffets is so fun! You are so fortunate to have your son participate. I bet these paintbrushes are amazing!

    • Larissa says

Yes!! All my 6 kids work on pieces, and he happened to have one to do too, so I thought…why not? 😉 I’m a brush snob, so for me to say they are awesome means something.

  40. Robyn Wright says

Gorgeous! I have a couple makeovers I want to do. Would love to try your brushes!

  41. Sarah Ramberg says

What a fun challenge- and I love how your buffet turned out! As for the brushes, gosh, where do I begin? LOL- I have a plain, three-legged table that I need to do something with, so I’d probably with there and work my way through my stash!

    • Larissa says

It sure is fun to work with someone. I’m sure you know how that goes. 🙂 Stashes are awesome for projects and you rok them Sarah!

  42. Harriet says

Love the effect the white glazing gives. Can’t wait to see the next buffet!

  43. Grace says

I love how you are not afraid to tackle any project, something I need to overcome. I have a collection of furniture, that I need to get the nerve to try re-doing. I have done floors and doors over, just hesitant on the furniture, and I don’t know why. Time for me to “just do it”. Thanks for your inspiration, and I do have a buffet that would look lovely like yours- it has the worlds longest drawer, I’d guess. I need to start on something smaller tho. Blessings to you and your family.

    • Larissa says

More like insane…mwahahaha!! 😉 Thanks for the love, Grace. I know what you mean about starting. That’s half the battle.

  44. kimmylouwho says

another great make-over! You find furniture pieces that really shine after your hard-work!

  45. Kodi Wright says

I love this. It’s beautiful. Tha is for sharing your talents and inspiring others to get out there and do it themselves.

  46. Karen Baumgardner says

Another pretty buffet…love that turquoise inside, it just made the piece! It must be fun to do such a different look than the normal painted ones. I’m sure the thrill of the makeover keeps you going..me too!

    • Larissa says

I had to do something fun with those. Thanks! It sure does make it an adventure.

  47. Leona Gibbs says

I can’t wait to see what your son does with his buffet. Yours turned out beautiful.

    • Larissa says

He is doing a fun piece and we can’t wait to show you. Thanks!

  48. Leona Gibbs says

Yikes I didn’t answer your question in my first comment! I have a 40’s era vanity that has damaged veneer on top but lots of beautiful details and a mirror that swings out. I think I should paint it for one of my granddaughters who are all young adults now.

  49. Sheila Ahern says

Love the updated buffet. I have several pieces that need some love, I just haven’t had the time and knowledge to tackle it so far! I don’t want to give up on them yet 🙂

    • Larissa says

I hear ya! I have several pieces like that. You can DO IT!

  50. Zebrina says

I have a buffet I’ve been putting off painting. Those brushes might just be the encouragement I need. ?

  51. Marie says

I love how you’re doing this challenge with Mr. I – so much fun! I just happen to be doing a white wash piece as we speak but not nearly as pretty a piece as your lovely buffet (which I’ve pinned).

    • Larissa says

It’s fun to mix it up for sure. I can’t wait to see what you do, Marie. Thank you for the love.

  52. Michelle says

I’m waiting for a piece to “air out” and then plan to paint it white. I’d love to use the glazing technique to pull out the details. I’ll have to check your blog for tips on using a dark glaze. Would love to try the quality paintbrushes, I’m sure they make a huge difference.

    • Larissa says

Awesome! Yes, do, as I have several project with a link to them in this post. Feel free to ask questions!

  53. Jayme Coonce says

It’s always so fun to see what you’ve been working on! I can’t wait to see what’s up next.

    • Jayme Coonce says

Oh…and the first thing I would paint…ummm…I have an old table a friend gave me that she wanted a “surprise me” re-finish. I’m guessing that would the project I would choose. Funny how the “surprise me” factor is more stressful than a request for a specific look.

  54. Mary says

I love both of them, such a talented son. I have a vanity that has been sitting in my garage for two years, I think it is time to get it done.

    • Larissa says

Thanks! Mr. I will have his turn later this week. You will rock that vanity, Mary!

  55. Pamela says

I just love everything you do, you are my favorite blogger by far <3. I would love to have a set of those brushes 🙂 I have a very old buffet and matching dining set that are in dire need a make over. Keep up the great work you do and God bless your family.

    • Larissa says

Pamela, you deserve a hug for making my day. Thank you!!

  56. Constance Colvin says

Ohhhhhh…….I’d love to have those brushes!

  57. Sheila Edgerton says

Beautiful buffet, unexpected color but I liked it! The first thing I would paint is a headboard and footboard for my mother. It is a long skinny four poster bed. I really need that round brush for it!

    • Larissa says

Yes, that caramel will stop you in your tracks. Makes for a great base. hahaha! Sounds like your bed is in for a makeover!

  58. Denise says

Cute post and beautiful makeover Larissa. You and your son look so much alike! 🙂 Have a great day! xo

    • Larissa says

Thanks so much, Denise. Poor kid does have it in for him. ha!

  59. Gilmer Gal says

Do I love this makeover::: You don’t even have to ask. It’s gorgeous and I am going to do this to my buffet. The house is getting painted right at this moment and almost every piece of furniture is getting an overhaul. So I could use some new brushes!!

    • Larissa says

Wahoo!! I love it. You are going to make your home phenomenal!

    • Larissa says

That is wonderful to hear. I can’t say enough good things about them.

  60. Dianne Pinyan says

I am always impressed with what you can do with things some would consider junk.

  61. Paula says

Y’all are too cute for words!!! Love the glazing; it really brings out those amazing details. Also love the color inside. If I had that buffet, I’d send my guests to fetch me a platter just so they could see. Thanks for the many chances to win those Zibra brushes! I still need to paint my hubby’s purple dresser (that I told you about in earlier giveaways). I tell myself that I’m waiting until I get the Zibra brushes; I’m saving up for some but would love to win them! I look forward to Thursday and seeing Mr. I’s buffet makeover. I wonder who would make the better dessert.

    • Paula says

PS love the new profile picture!

      • Larissa says

Thanks, Paula! It was time for a two year update – can’t believe it’s been that long. ugh.

    • Larissa says

hahaha…you are so sweet and hilarious! We are having fun and the color pop was the icing on the cake. Thanks for the love and hope you win!

  62. Christy@Confessions of a Serial Do-it-Yourselfer says

Ooh a competition… I love it! You know he’s going to give you a run for your money don’t you?? Of course he will really have to step up his game because this buffet is GORGEOUS!! I saw you putting that caramel color on and thought oh no! But I LOVE the result with the white glaze! XOXO

    • Larissa says

You and your guy need to do one! It would be fun. And yes, he sure is!! That color is horrid by itself and I wondered if anyone would freak out…hahaha!! It makes for an awesome base.

  63. Toni says

I love how this buffet turned out and love love the pop of color inside!!

    • Larissa says

Make for fun putting away the dishes…hee hee hee. 😉

  64. Robin Stephens says

I would never have thought to use that creamy caramel color but, it’s amazingly rich and lovely. The surprise-teal is just as much a treat to the eyes! Perfect!

    • Larissa says

It sure is deceptive at first, but what it can do, right? Thanks for the love!

  65. Dodie says

Be still my heart – what a beautiful makeover !!!!

  66. Susie says

Great makeover! Love the color combo and whitewash! Also think I need that pile of awesome paint brushes. Pick me. Pick me. 🙂 XOXO Susie from The Chelsea Project

Wow love the buffet can’t wait to see your son’s project,

  68. Christi Norris says

I love how the first buffet turned out! Can’t wait to see what the second one looks like. The brushes look great,. I have a spindle telephone table that I’d love to try them on!

    • Larissa says

Awesome to hear! We’re excited to show you. This is fun!

  69. Susan says

Love the final look, especially how the white glazing pops!

    • Larissa says

I had to do something to draw out that amazing craftsmanship. It’s beautiful!

  70. Beckie Stanevich says

I have an antiqued picture frame that needs painted and glazed. My Zibra brush is almost dead. I need a new one – or 3!

    • Larissa says

Have you tried soaking it in vinegar? It will soften the brushes and loosen built-up paint to make it new. Leave it overnight. 😉

  71. Tammie says

Beautiful makeover! The whitewashed effect really brings out all the details of the buffet.

    • Larissa says

I had to do something to showcase that beauty. Thank you!

  72. Tammie says

Beautiful makeover! The whitewashed effect really brings out all the details of the buffet. Looking forward to seeing your son’s effort.

    • Larissa says

Thanks! I love glazing to the extreme. Allows you to create texture and depth. We can’t wait to share his buffet too!

  73. Jan Cole says

I have followed you for a couple of years, but have never posted anything..YET! I love the work you do and the colors, techniques, and tutorials. I simply love this buffet!! It is charming and unusual. I’m going to try it on a buffet of my daughter’s. I’m anxious to see Mr. I’s buffet! It’s great that he loves to do the repurposing also 🙂

    • Larissa says

Well, Jan, I’m stoked to have you pop in. Thank you!! I hope you have a blast on your buffet.

  74. Kimberly Davis says

It turned out beautifully! I have s buffet that belonged to my great-grandparents that is very similar in style to this one. You have inspired me to make mine over!

  75. Tammy Lott says

This is a fun competition – looking forward to seeing your son’s buffet makeover. My daughter has an old buffet that is pretty beat up and needs a good rehab. We’d love to work on it together.

    • Larissa says

It sure is! I’m happy to hear you are enjoying it. Sounds like you have work to do. Have fun!

  76. Sandy says

you worked very hard, the colors are great. I wish the inlay could have been saved but that would not have gone with the country look.
I would like to use the brushes on a chair I have. Can’t wait to see Mr. I’s looks like. Fun

    • Larissa says

Yes, I really debated on many finishes, but choose this one. Hard to decide! Thank you for the kind words.

  77. KathyH says

Love your buffet! I have a couple old dressers that need some lovin’, I’d use the brushes on them!

  78. Kathie Gates says

We have a similar buffet that is in need of some TLC. You have inspired me to get started on it. The Zibra brushes would be a tremendous help. Thank you for sharing.

  79. Jennifer says

I would use the brushes to paint an old dresser I have.

  80. Brandi Kilpatrick says

Oh, Larissa! Such a beautiful transformation! You are one of my inspirations…in everything you do! If I were to win the set of Zibra brushes, I would use them to paint one of the many projects in my shop awaiting new life. Thanks for the opportunity. You rock!

    • Larissa says

Your comment means much, Brandi. Thank you for being a light.

  81. Donna Wessells says

How wonderful you get to do projects with your son! With a little competition!

    • Larissa says

Yes, such a blessing to work with all my gang. Thank you!!

  82. Patty Soriano says

I have a few samples of dull looking paint; i.e., browns and tans. Your idea of brightening these colors with a lighter paint to highlight is a great idea. I love the way your buffet turned out! I’m a table person, but I do seem to have a lot of chairs also. I imagine the brushes will be used to paint one of these. Thank you, Larissa !

    • Larissa says

They work great as bases for sure. I love to get my layering on. 😉

  83. Chris says

This piece is so lovely! Great job! How does the wax work to seal if it is not chalk paint tho?

    • Larissa says

Thanks! I rarely use a chalk paint, so it works on anything with a flat finish easily and most any paint if you wanted to.

  84. Teresa Carr says

    This is beautiful. Great job!

  85. Connie says

Love the buffet! I have one that I’ve put off painting because I didn’t know what to do with it. Now I know! Just have to go through your blog to find out how to add the white glaze. Thanks for the idea (and also a chance to win the brush!)!

    • Larissa says

It was a second’s paint, but Caramel Swirl by Behr is close. Thanks for the love!

  125. Teresa says

Hola, he descubierto por casualidad y me quedo.
Me gustaría que me explicaras como se hace exactamente la técnica del acristalamiento, La pintura color caramelo es al agua o al aceite?.
    Gracias

    • Larissa says

Hi, Teresa. It was a latex paint and then topped with a thinned paint (or you could use glazing or wax – glazing is expensive and is basically paint that has an additive to keep it from drying fast). Hope that helps! 😀

  126. M T says

I am looking forward to doing one. I see you painted over the “warbly” part (the veneer?) on the sides. Can that be taken off? Mine is pretty bad. Thanks, -m
