Home is the Key ~ Helping Others Find Home

Inspire others...share!

It is often we can take the most important things to us for granted. Take for instance that I wake up in a soft, cozy bed with my loves around me in my HOME. In the morning, I get out of bed while it’s still dark, and I pause to listen at each door. Hearing their breathing sends my heart soaring, and I say a small prayer of thanks. It’s at those times I am truly thankful for my family just being there, and for a place for us to dwell. There is no doubt, a home is the key. Unfortunately, in reality not everyone is afforded such a peaceful feeling as they might be struggling from day to day.

Our family, like many, has been dealt hard times. In the past we have had many bills from various health setbacks to tend to that have had us living from paycheck to paycheck. It can be so hard on a family, however, it often strengthens them too. I don’t know what I’d do if we didn’t have a place for my kids to feel safe.

Today, I’m here to bring attention to a national campaign called, “Home is the Key” created by Habitat for Humanity to address the nation’s rising affordable housing crisis. My hope is that you will help me promote awareness and even join me in helping others just like you did last year at this time.

First and foremost, I am thankful for just being able to have our home. Not only do we simply live here, but home is where we also homeschool our children. That alone is one powerful blessing.

Here are some facts to consider:

  • One in four households in the U.S. pays more than 30% of income for housing and may have difficulty affording necessities such as food or clothing.
  • Virtually nowhere in the U.S. can a full-time employee earning minimum wage afford a one-bedroom apartment. Even two such jobs won’t rent a two-bedroom apartment in 29 states and the District of Columbia.
  • Affordable housing can improve health outcomes by freeing up family resources for nutritious food and health care expenses.*

Families deserve the chance to start off on the right foot in a home and have it be affordable too. Did you realize that owning a home affords you the opportunity to learn? I can speak from our own experience that we didn’t know much of anything about remodeling and repairing a home. In spite of our lack of knowledge, we chose to read, learn, and practice to hone our skills. Consequently, having a home as taught us many life-application skills that we can pass on to our children.

If anything, the least we can do is share on social media, right? With a few taps or clicks you can be helping – every little bit helps.  There is no doubt that if it weren’t for my family, my home wouldn’t have life in it. In fact, without my home, where would my family be?

A couple of years ago in Quebec, where I was living, Habitat For Humanity ran a women builders program. Women were encouraged to make a team of 10, register and fundraise 500.00 each team member and get ready for a build day. A group of moms from the home and school association got tother and we did our fundraising…it was so wonderful to see how happy folks were to give to this terrific cause! I had such a fun day at the build (installing hardwood flooring for me, tiling and also painting for some others). We were blessed to meet the mom of the family that we were building for too. It was a terrific day! Now, I live in Ontario and there is a Habitat ReStore near me, that I visit weekly. I love Habitat For Humanity! Having a home is a blessing, and it shouldn’t be so very hard for so many families.
