Art Deco Dressing Table goes Industrial Chic

Today is all about my favorite project of the month – Themed Furniture Makeover Day!! What could be more fun than getting together with a bunch of furniture girls to do what we love? Today’s theme is all about Industrial…I love it. ♥ Normally, I would have done some sort of factory industrial type build or makeover, but I chose to go a different route, and have a very fun Art Deco piece to show you today.

Enter in this vintage dressing table…

Isn’t she pretty and full of character? Hailing in with a mirror of ginormous proportions (50″ diameter to be exact), and all-over goodness. Now, the mirror is removed from this picture because I don’t trust it to survive my family. Can you blame me with 6 kids, a dog and a cat?

Found this sweet piece on Craigslist and a guy was selling it before moving from his home and also had a matching chest. I sent my spouse off to pick up the vanity, and when he came home, he realized he had left the bottom portion of the mirror there. (It isn’t a complete circle). When I called to see if we could come back (hour drive one way – tsk), he agreed to meet us closer to save us the trip. (whew!)

DETAILS

I had also noticed the original glass shelf was missing and asked if he had that too. No luck. He had no idea what I was talking about, so I assume it was gone ages ago. No worries, my glass guy cut one for me lickety-split.

Worn in spots and some surface scratches, but in excellent structural condition otherwise.

I would have loved to see the original bench that went with this set. Finding a matching bench can be a chore, but I was able to find this sweet seat at a local thrift shop only days after purchasing this set (a God-wink, I’m sure!). The curves and metal structure match perfectly.

DIY TIME

By now you may be wondering how I’m going to make this set look industrial for our theme, but just wait. First, I sand down the surfaces with the intent on keeping some of them wood and painting others.

The top of the cabinets and drawer fronts have a gorgeous walnut veneer that I just can’t cover up. With a bit of linseed oil, like I used on my antique pew and my bureau, they were as good as new.

So rich, aren’t they?

*Modern Masters provided product for this post (see full disclosure)

Now for the rest, I’m about to show you an awesome product called Modern Masters Metal Effects Reactive Paint. (wicked giggling ensues) You can turn anything you can paint into the most perfect patina. Check it out…

With these simple products, I am able to take this vanity and give it a makeover like nothing you’ve ever seen.  To get started, I do two coats of primer followed by two coats of the copper metallic paint.

I seriously could have stopped here because that copper is GORGEOUS! But…as soon as I lay on that second coat, I take the Green Patina Aging Solution and spritz it all over. This will cause the metals in the paint to age quickly (within minutes!!) and get that gorgeous copper patina we all love.

THE REVEAL

Are you ready for the reveal? I am!

Isn’t that chevron inlay fantastic?! And look at those original brass pulls….swoon…

I am head-over-heels with the woods and metals all playing together on this piece. How stunning and funky industrial it is! My goal was a piece reminiscent to the 1920’s industrial age and I think it’s all that and more. What say you?

The upholstery I found has the complimenting colors in the wood grain and paint. I was so happy when I found a remnant piece to fit my bench.

Even the bench looks like copper pipe with a green patina. eep! I love it.
