Mid Century Modern Henredon Tables Updated

While there is no denying I truly have a heart for farmhouse mixed with Nordic, cottage, industrial, and shabby (to name a few – ha!). I also LOVE the lines of Mid Century Modern. When I spied these tables, I couldn’t resist taking them home to give them an update. Have you ever owned or seen this style? They are a pair of Mid Century Modern Henredon tables that are soon to get a fresh new look. {{cue the James Bond music}}

This era is known for its architectural design. These tables followed suit with clean lines and play on a truly zest for flair. These tables are no exception. Those curvy tops paired with matching pedestal bases are sleek and stylish.

If you look close, the veneer has even a super-awesome star design. That alone drew me in to these pieces. Though, as you notice, they have much wear to the surface with scratches, dings, and dents. Not to mention that awful speckled effect they did to everything in that era.

The bases are even worse…almost blucky. Peeling and flaking paint and kinda a funky color. Time for an update, eh?

DIY TIME

Time to get my DIY on. Out comes my sander and I take off that finish easy-peasy since it was so worn. The dents had to go too.

Sanding Henredon Table Top with DeWalt Sander | prodigalpieces.com

The bases were cleaned up with a wire brush and sandpaper as well. I couldn’t believe how easily it was flaking off. Next, I took an old sock and used my Briarsmoke Stain to highlight that awesome veneer design. You can see how I’ve used that stain before in these posts. These Mid Century Modern Henredon tables are going to be stylin’!

Once everything was cured on top, I add two coats of a poly topcoat using my paint brush.

PAINTING

Since the top was a veneer, the edges were actually ply to look at and not so pretty. To make the sides gel with the top I used my brush to give those a couple coats of paint.

I like the light color it was already. However, I had to get rid of the yellowing effect it had going on.

I used a creamy white to refresh the bases. My littlest always loves to help me when working on tables. Just her size and she works so hard.

Then, I let them cure, and we’re here they are!

The tops are by far my favorite feature of this set. My kids ranged from saying the design looked like a Buckeye nut, to a maple leaf, to a flower. What say you?

What beautiful tables and love the design on top. Have never seen a design quite like that.
Thank you for this wonderful giveaway opportunity.
My daughter had brought over a heavy tear drop table and have no idea what I’m going to do with it yet.

    • Larissa says

I hadn’t either, hence the draw to me. Sounds like an awesome project piece.

    • Larissa says

You are so sweet, Debra. Thank you! I sure hope so. 🙂

  2. Karen R says

The tables look great. The tops remind me of flowers! I would love to winthe brushes. I am planning on re-doing a cabinet I’ve had forever with them

  3. Nancy C. says

Good morning from the Midwest. You are an inspiration to all of us. Your life, family and your talents. God bless you as you continue to inspire your readers.

    • Larissa says

Good morning! What a wonderful way to be greeted, Nancy. Thank you!

  4. Michele Branham says

Larissa, you’ve done it again! The tables look great! My next paint project is a chunky coffee table and matching end table. The brushes would be great to use on this project. Thank you for offering a great giveaway and sharing helpful tips.

    • Larissa says

Woot! Thanks for the encouragement, Michele. These were fun!

  5. Kenda says

Your little tables look awesome! I especially like how you painted the edges of the top with gray. In fact, if I were to win the brushes, the first thing I’d do is use them to do a stain/paint combo on a couple of pieces. I hate using tape and in the end I always end up with “dork hand” and goop it all up anyway. Nice job…I know those little tables will go quick!

    • Larissa says

Thanks, Kenda! The style is so fun to work with to draw out different elements.

  6. Brandi Bryant says

I love the tables. Almost reminds me of a starburst. I would either paint my cabinets or a bookcase that belonged to my Grandparents. Thanks for the giveaway.

  7. Grace says

It’s very fall-ish mama. It is also true that you only have to dip once, almost. I mean you have to dip far less that so any other brushes. I got a couple at my Lowe’s and they were on clearance, like 7.00 a piece. I have a couple. I worked on my Sofa’s legs over the weekend. I have a channel back chair myself and I Kay paint those legs too. You made those tables more refined and refreshed! I hope you get some rest, wink wink. ❤️

    • Larissa says

For this project I only dipped once. Just depends on the size of the piece. Thanks for stopping by!

  8. Alison S says

I have a dining table and chairs I’d like to paint!

  9. Lezlie adams says

I have seen these tables several times and always passed them by. I’m kicking myself right now! You did a great job.

    • Larissa says

Ouch! 😀 Don’t do it too hard. Easy to pass them by at times. hee hee hee

  10. Cindy Downing says

Love these tables. My fave part is thoseose lovely columns. I would paint a couple of my tables too

  11. Elaine says

They definitely look like leaves to me…and they would be perfect for an autumn porch makeover, surrounded by pumpkins and other fall accessories.

  12. Donna Gonzalez says

I had tables very similar to these in the 70s. Wish I still had them. Great project, as always!

  13. Lissa Lance says

I love the tables and yes, they are reminiscent of a buckeye! Awesome!

  14. Rose says

Great project! I have an old headboard that these bushes would be perfect for

  15. Debbie says

I need to try that paint and the brushes. Feeling inspired to fix a few things around here after seeing all your beautiful work!

  16. lisa goodson says

Love all your ideas and creations. gifted

  17. Patty Soriano says

I have an unfinished table that needs to be done. These brushes would make it SO easy!! Thanks, Larissa !

  18. Kaycee says

Larissa, these tables, and your lil’ girl, are so beautiful! I love the change to the top, so organic. I see so many shapes in the tops.
I would love to try the Zibra paint brushes on an oak side table with drop down sides. I think that the both the palm pro and the square brush would be awesome to test out on this table.
    Thank you for the opportunity.

  19. Debra Wise says

Love the way you did the stain on the design. Gorgeous! I have a couple tables to paint.

  20. Kathy E. says

Wow…I would never think to add such a great design to the top of the tables…they look awesome! I’d be using the Zimbra brushes to paint my old bookshelf for storing fabric.

  21. Regina S says

Sweet tables! Thanks for showing your work.

  22. Claudine says

Another beautiful job! I didn’t realize that you could sand down a veneer…I assumed that it would be too thin. Great info!

  23. Sherry Stuifbergen says

Marissa, your ambition feeds me. I love the “bust” you show in some of your pictures in your “shop.” Would you ever consider selling it? I have always admired it. Can’t wait to see the “unveiling” of your new remodeled kitchen. I like your blog that you “restyle” old pieces…don’t go out and buy new to suit your purposes. You have an “eye” that is a great gift.

    • Larissa says

Thanks, Sherry! That David dude is staying with me for now, or at least until we remodel our living room and I decide it doesn’t fit. I will keep you in mind! Thanks for the love. 🙂

  24. Kim says

I just finished repairing a table with ornate legs so I would use one of the special brushed to help with the legs. These tables are beautiful and inspiring.

  25. Kimmylouwho says

What a fun project! They turned out beautifully! I would love those Zibra brushes as I have a dresser to repainted & will be helping my daughter in decorating her new house on a budget!

  26. Karie says

I have a side table for my bedroom that I would just love to use the brushes on!

  27. Hollie Jahnke says

I would paint my dining room table.

  28. Pamela says

As usual, Beautiful! Mid century has never been my style but I love what you do with it. I finally got the chance to use my Zibra round brush on some spindals and it did a quick and easy job of them. I recently won a palm pro fro Zibra, can’t wait to use it. Blessings ❤

    • Larissa says

That’s so awesome to hear! I just love them for so many reasons. Enjoy!

  29. Gilmer Gal says

Yep, a maple leaf! I would finish my project, which is a beautiful Monterey buffet that has been treated like just another piece of furniture. It was ‘redone’ years ago with a fake wood look and finished with marine shellac! I have the table and 4 chairs to match, which I had to take apart and glue back together and repaint the design to match the original. To have the whole set would be awesome!

    • Larissa says

haha! Oh my…sounds like you have your work cut out for you. Fun!

  30. Rebecca - Knoxville,TN says

Love the leafy wood design. I have an mcm bedroom set waiting for some paint and Zibra brushes to transform them into navy blue and gold beauties!

    • Larissa says

It just looked like it needed to have an organic feel. Thanks!

  31. susan says

I LOVE THOSE TABLES AND THOSE BRUSHES ARE AWESOM E

  32. Christine Long says

I’ve always love the stained designs people are doing now, but was afraid to try. Did you just follow the lines of the laminate or did you draw on 1st?

    • Larissa says

Yes, just used my old sock (haha) and followed the lines. Really easy. 😉

  33. Marie says

My first thought was a Maple Leaf but what can I say, I’m from Canada. Love how you refinished the tops of these tables! Another gorgeous makeover and I’m sure these tables will sell quickly for you! Pinned

    • Larissa says

I was waiting for it! ahahaha!! Thanks, Marie. Hugs from the USA!

  34. Mary Kaiser says

Whether the look like a flower or leaf, they are beautiful! I really hope that I win the brushes, I want to make over some furniture, but I do not have good brushes do to it with. If I don’t win I will have to start saving my money to buy them. Thanks for the inspiration and the contest to win!!

  35. Linda Petteys says

I have an old dresser sitting in my garage that needs to be my next project. I love these brushes. Maybe if I win it will help me get motivated. Thank you!

  36. Maryann Smith says

I’d paint the shelves I am making to put over the windows in my laundry room.

  37. Charlene says

Nicely done ! I like the two tone top. It’s nice to accentuate the natural wood pattern. Very pretty !

  38. Melissa says

Love how stained tabletops came out. I have many projects the brushes would be great for.

  39. Annette says

I’d first paint an old end table my parents have.

  40. Rebecca says

Love them! And you’re right, those speckles do nothing for the furniture! (But they do bring back memories of the good ‘ol 80s!)

  41. Jenny Peickert says

I really like how the tables turned out! Since i thrift, i am always on the lookout for furniture or decor to make my own & the brushes would help me do that. Blessings..jenny

  42. PC says

I am looking for tables to redo -or I will have to build them.

  43. Vickie says

Love the tables! The tops are beautiful!

  44. Christina in FL says

Brilliant re-do of these unusual tables. I don’t recall ever seeing this style. Your artistic staining is a crown on the top.

  45. Jolinda says

All of those brushes in one give away? Be still my heart.
I did not notice the design on the table tops until you stained them. I love how they turned out and I think your little one made a wonderful helper. She is so serious and adorable,

  46. Kristina says

The tops of your tables are amazing! You truly are an inspiration to me to try new things!
I have an entire staircase of banisters to paint and that round brush would make ot so much easier, thank you for the opportunity to win!

    • Larissa says

You made my day, Kristina. I’m so happy to hear your words of encouragement. Thanks!

  47. Grace Rasmussen says

They turned out so beautiful- you surely do have a God-given talent to see what needs to be done to pieces! I have lots of projects of my own, just have to get other things caught up to have time to work on them. Time is always the biggest enemy- for us creative types. Oh, and winning the brushes would be awesome.

    • Larissa says

You made me blush, Grace. Hugs! Yes, time is always a struggle.

  48. Mary says

Oh, how you inspire me so. I have a few pieces of furniture to paint and those paint brushes would be a huge help!

  49. Melissa Storms says

Wow, those tables are seriously jaw dropping. I love the tops. I have a table my mom gave me that fits perfectly in the space I have it but that needs work. It has an inset top that I want to decoupage with some beautiful paper I found. I plan to paint the rest with a chalk paint and then wax.

  50. Mia Aceto says

A little smile comes to my face when I open my emails and see that you have posted a new lovely project. I am amazed at your creativity of using “old” to make “new”. I appreciate and admire when people, me included, make a new item from an old one and you have great vision. Nothing changes the world better than a little paint. Keep it up!

    • Larissa says

Your words mean more than you’ll ever know, Mia. Thank you!

  51. Danelle Fuller says

    Another great makeover!

  52. Anne Holcomb says

Always love your projects and those brushes look like they are great to use.

    • Larissa says

Coming from a brush addict, I can’t say enough good things about them. Thanks!

  53. Stscey Armstrong says

Ways love your makeovers and i love dixie belle paint. Those zibra brushes have become my new fav aswell. Thanks

  54. April says

The tables turned out beautiful, you do a great job!

  55. Moonalisa Crabass says

I *LOVE* how these came out!! If only I could find a set that was actual veneer, rather than laminate, so I could enjoy the beautiful detailing ❤

    • Larissa says

They are hard to find ones like that at times. Hope you score some!

  56. Gwen Hoefle says

Having the right materials for your projects always makes them go smoothly and look Great!!!! The brushes would be wonderful for bringing life back to out dated furniture. I would love to try them on a table with a glass top I have. Great job on the tables!

  57. Jonda says

The tables look great, I always look forward to seeing your projects. Great work. I am going to try and tackle a coffee table.

  58. Brenda says

I love how these turned out! Amazing! So unique!

  59. Krista says

I just picked up a truckload of furniture from my mother in law that desperately needs a good paint job before my busy season starts, so these brushes would come at the perfect time!!

  60. Tracy says

    I’d paint a small dresser.

  61. Tammy Shelton says

I absolutely love the brushes! I am redoing a summer wicker table and chairs and wicker planters.

  64. Tammy D. says

The tables are beautiful and unique! I love them. I have a few home DIY projects and I could use a good set of paint brushes.

  65. Sasha says

    • Larissa says

OOh…that’s exciting! I hope they turn out as you hope. 🙂
