Modern Chic Makeover for Art Deco Nightstand

My kids are with me in my daily grind and I love to include them in my projects as well as giving them projects of their own. One day that won’t be with me and I want them to have wings to fly. I feel that learning a trade, along with a scholarly education in homeschool, is crucial. My efforts to broaden their horizons includes working alongside me as the eagerly request to learn. Today, my oldest daughter, Miss C, is getting to work on this Art Deco nightstand by giving it a modern chic makeover.

Whenever I receive a piece of furniture for free, I let one of my six kids have at it. Both of my parents have generously given various items for them to work on, and this time my father gave us this piece to revive along with a dressing table. I am working on the dressing table and my daughter gets to revive this rough-looking nightstand.

Turns out this is a piece made by Virginia House Furniture right here in the U.S. and this company is still making handmade furniture today. Isn’t that cool?

Miss C isn’t a foundling when working on furniture since she has already done a few pieces like this table and this dresser, to name a few. She knew right off that to get started, sanding was absolutely needed. She used my favorite sander with a 150 grit sandpaper to get the finish in shape for paint.

Once she was done prepping, Miss C used a beige coat of paint as her base since she intended to use a metallic paint for the topcoat that can sometimes be translucent. I have her using a foam brush because metallic paints are known to showcase all of your brush strokes, and she’s after a nice even finish.

After the base coat has dried for a couple of hours, she used one of my favorite metallic paints by Modern Masters called Champagne. I’ve used it and my other favorites metallics on several pieces before like my vanities and tables.

Two coats give it a nice rich look, but Miss C wanted to add a modern flair to this piece. She decided to “dip” the legs in white and add some funky fun to the front.

After her final touches, I must say I love this piece with the modern chic look.

It’s fun and has so much more character to it than before, don’t you think?

Miss C even lined the drawer with a fun vintage fabric to showcase more eye-candy.

We had fun shopping for some vintage pieces to stage this piece. The vintage print had a mate that is now hung in my boys’ bedroom. And… that Gorham brass bowl is now available in my shop along with this nightstand. Yay! (SOLD)

That looks really great, she did an excellent job! That is so awesome that your children are in on this too.

As an aside, the bedspread in the photo – I have the exact same one, it belonged to my Great Grandmother – I am 43, and she died when I was 5. Do you have any info about the bedspread? .

It was fun to see her “wheels” rolling and work on this piece. Thanks so much! As for the bedspread, I have three chenille ones and I believe they’re from the 40’s. Hope that helps!

.A very chic piece, color combination is super! Re: bed spread, looks like one my Grandmother bought in the late 1940’s. Enjoy your Mother’s Day!

The pic of your daughter sanding, she looks like a younger version of you, Larissa. You have raised some ambitious kids…not “gamers”with techie tools with entitlements. Look forward to your blogs in my email.

Sherry above is absolutely right. I was looking at the photos and mistakenly though tMiss C was you Larissa. Ha! All the children are following in your footsteps and it is a wonderful thing to behold. Have a Happy and Blessed Mothers Day!

It is so nice to see a mom teach her children about the fulfillment in doing the work yourself. This skill set will help her into adulthood. Too many children want it,buy it and then forget it. I still use many of my skills from sewing to painting and I am 70 but get so much enjoyment from creating what I want.

Miss C definitely has her mother’s touch! You must be so proud of her! She did an outstanding job! Love the stipe and the white dipped legs! Awesome makeover!
