Aqua Blue Table ~ My Favorite Furniture Color

Want to see my favorite aqua blue table makeover? Recently, a client of mine asked for a pair of nightstands to go with a dresser she had purchased from me, and so began the hunt.  I love this part.  I mean, what could be better than shopping for furniture? A new little flea market had opened downtown a few weeks ago and I wanted to stop in and see if they had anything suitable. They ended up being closed, but when I drove a couple stores down, I noticed another place that I had seen before, but never stopped in.

WHOA…when I walked in the door I turned and said to my kids with excitement in my voice, “I really shouldn’t have found this place.” Furniture everywhere, and not your department store stuff. This is old, vintage, and absolutely lovely gems.

Likewise, the guy had priced things accurately for their worth and no nightstands for my client, but that’s when I saw this beauty.

Little lacking in the love department with it’s damaged veneer surface, but oooh the lines and legs of this piece!

If you follow me on social media, I shared this picture with hesitation because I wasn’t sure if I would stick to my intentions of painting. Most of the time no one wants a stained piece – painted wins out every time.

TOO GOOD

Likewise, there’s no way I could paint that gorgeous top, so I sanded it down and refreshed that old stain with a new coating, then finished with several coats of poly.

Now for the base. It took me a day to decide if I should paint. While I really love wood, however, those hand carved details were just begging to be drawn out. After much fretting, I dove in with my eyes closed and cringing.  Seriously.

Can I just say that I LOVE how it turned out!

I’ve already had people asking me about the color I use. However, the ironic part of this story is, I don’t know. This paint was one of my first scores from the “seconds” stash and I nearly fainted when I saw it. Also, I have added it to the collection I’m creating for one day owning my own line of paint – we’ll see.

I ration this color out for special projects like my Art Deco waterfall dressing table

BLUE LOVE

This little table fit the bill, didn’t it?

So, what do you think?  I’d love to hear your thoughts….would you have painted or kept it wood?  No regrets here, but curious if you would have done the same.

In addition, there’s just something about how the paint draws out that woodwork, that wasn’t being showcased with stain.

While this aqua blue table has already sold from my online shop, you can peruse other furniture or request a custom piece done just for you. With that in mind, now back to the nightstand search.

STUNNING! I love how you left the wood top. I probably would have painted it all, but I also am not as creative as you figuring out that the blending of the finishes would work so well. I too, would love to know the color of that paint. Whoever returned it as a “mis-mix” had to be nuts LOL.

This table is amazing! I love the two colors of paint together. That choice really highlights the beautiful details. And I am always a fan of pairing a painted wood base with a stained top. Simply stunning! I would love for you to share this at my party that is going on now at http://www.andersonandgrant.com!

Woo hoo! Godd for you, Laurie. I’d love to see your makeover. You should go see if you like my Rustic & Red dresser. 😉

  6. Joyce says

I often prefer the look of wood to paint, but I LOVE what you did. In this case I think the legs look better painted the way you did it because the carvings show more. And I like that you preserved the pretty top wood. Great job and beautiful color!

    • Larissa says

Thank you, Joyce! Yes, I am very glad I painted even though I reaaly struggled to decide. It was a keeper! 😉

  7. Marie Moren says

I love the color. And would love to know how to get the same color, when you have it ready for marketing. You have an amazing gift of refurbishing furniture !

  8. Gabby Anderson says

  9. Michele Knutson says

Did you get the paint color analyzed? I would love to have the formula they gave you!!!!

    • Larissa says

Not yet, but plan to as soon as it starts getting low. 😉

  10. Maria says

I love your website, love your pieces, and that VW dresser is completely adorable. But I’m wondering, Have you gotten that color analyzed yet ? I’m so curious.

    Thank you

    • Larissa says

      Thank you, Maria. 🙂 I haven’t analyzed yet…I’m working on a project.

  11. Joyce says

I fell in love with a color yrs ago from Martha Stewart line. I loved it. Black/brown or brown/black. Did bath cabinets then some tables. Lovedddddd it. Later it was discontinued so had it matched but never quite the same. Still good but not the same. Hope you can match this beautiful color you used. It is beautiful on everything. Love it.

  12. Gwen Clark says

You turned a grand old lady into a beautiful swan. The paint is so gorgeous! The wood top gives you a hint of her former life. Just love it all. You do marvelous things.

    • Larissa says

You are the best, Gwen! Thank you so much for lovin’ on my work. 🙂

  13. DONNA COKER says

I love love love it. I would like to know what kind of paint you use because I have a few tables Im about to transform as well.

    • Larissa says

Thanks so much, Donna! This was a seconds paint so color I’m not sure, but I typically use a flat paint for the aged appeal. No need for chalk paint as it works just the same.

  14. Naomi says

Gorgeous!! You have a magic touch!!

  15. Mrs Mike says

With an inlay like that, I love that you didn’t paint it! I think the piece looks absolutely beautiful. And I’m drooling over the vanity. All of your work is just lovely!!

  16. Debby says

I love how you did this table! How did you sand the beveled edges? It looks amazing. Also, did you paint a top coat of poly or something like that after the latex? Can’t wait to hear back from you.

    • Larissa says

Thanks! I just hand sanded it down. I used a wax on the paint to help seal it.

  17. Mary says

Your labor of love is just beautiful Larissa! Wow! Love that you showcased that top and didn’t cover it with paint and had the intuition to paint the legs to showcase their beauty.; that is really “listening” to a piece. It is stunning! ( I just have one quick question, I love the color of the top after you finished it. Was that just poly on top of your sanded surface, no stain?) Thank you for sharing your gift!

    • Larissa says

You have made my day, Mary. Thank you for getting why I do what I do. Some think I just “slap on paint”. Nah…that’s too easy. 🙂 I stained the center, painted the edges and flower, and then topcoated it all with poly.
