It’s that time of the month where my Trash to Treasure girls and I get together to whip up DIY fun for you. Yay! If this is your first T2T time, you’re in for a treat. While you’ll see their projects in a bit, take a peek at what I found at a barn sale. It’s definitely dated, definitely damaged, but also definitely full of potential. Meet my mirrored medicine cabinet destined for a makeover.
Do you see the potential? If you peek inside, you’ll see the hardware exists for two shelves, but the shelves are missing.
Plus, there is damage to the veneer on the sides. Someone used packing tape to hold it together. At least it isn’t duct tape! haha.
DIY TIME
First order of business, I glue down the loose veneer and putty it with wood filler to fix it up. Then, I removed the mirror from the cabinet door. I have nothing against mirrors, but I want to change up the look and function of this cabinet.
Next, I search my stash to find some boards suited for shelving. I find two pieces of cabinet-grade plywood the exact width I need, then cut them down to length with my miter saw. Since the edges of the ply are not super pretty, I then apply veneer strip. Such a cool product! You can see how I used this same veneer on a Mid Century sewing desk.
Last, I cut up panels of tongue & groove that I have leftover from our remodel to fit the door panel. Here’s my non-mirrored medicine cabinet in the rough.
NEXT STEPS
Now, obviously, I’m not going to leave it in this raw state, so I break out my paint brush and give it a few coats of this seconds color on the outside, and a contrasting color on the inside.
Then, after the paint cures, I want to add my own personal touch to the front panel. You know I love typography, right? To finish it off, I create a graphic in my software, then use my transfer method to get it on the door.

Prime example of when “form meets function!!” I never would have replaced the mirror and it looks so much better!!!! It’s now so versatile you could put it in any room. I think it would make the most adorable spice cabinet!!!! ?
