Repurposed Magazine Rack Kitchen Storage

Not only is it time for Trash to Treasure Tuesday, but we also have a new member of our group to welcome. Denise at Salvaged Inspirations does amazing and work and we know you’ll love her too. Today, I’m sharing how a  repurposed magazine rack becomes extra kitchen storage.

Vintage Magazine Rack Before Repurpose by Larissa of Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

This vintage gem was tucked up on the top shelf with other wood items surrounding it. While it may not be pretty now, but it will be. tee hee. Anyhow, with all the changes in our media in today’s world, magazines aren’t quite as numerous as they once were.

So maybe you have one of these hanging around and not sure what to do with it. You can see how I repurposed this one HERE into a book caddy. However, this one is a sweet candidate to create kitchen storage.

DIY TIME

First, I used my stapler to reinforce the slats on the sides since all were loose in some form. This tool makes it so easy!

Then, once everything is nice and snug, I set up my Small Spray Shelter and Turn Table. Using a basic Flat White Spray Paint, I apply two coats of paint, letting cure in between. You can see how I’ve used this shelter and all my other shelters HERE.

Isn’t that looking so much better already? Like they say, paint covers a multitude of woes. haha.

NEXT STEPS

Afterward, while the paint cures, I break out my jigsaw and some scrap luan to make a piece to adorn the sides of my repurposed magazine rack. In short, if you didn’t know it already, I’m so smitten with tools. My motto has always been #toolsoverjewels. {{fist pump!!}}

After that, I give my cutout a couple of coats of Weathered Steel paint. I’m after layers and a vintage vibe. On top of that, I add more paint and my own typography in likeness of a vintage bakery sign.

THE REVEAL

Finally, are you ready to see this cutie all finished? Instead of housing a stash of magazines it now holds pans, vintage cutting boards, and a rolling pin or two.

Honestly, I have built-in drawers in my kitchen remodel reveal that holds my pans upright.

But…I know many of you do not have such awesomeness and this is one way to bring it in a BIG, but little way.

And, of course, I love the typography you can add to most anything. Do you love it too? You can see how I create the effect HERE this tutorial or in this video demo below. In case you’re wondering, I attached the sign with zip-ties.

tee hee! My mom loves jewelry and I enjoy it, but prefer tools. Thanks, girl!

Oh wow. I pass these up all the time but now that you have given me this idea i will not pass up another one. This would be great to display my silver trays in my booth! Thank you so much Larissa! I hope you are feeling better.

    • Larissa says

That’s an awesome idea! 😀 I shared my updates in my social media feeds yesterday. Getting some answers to prayer.

When I started painting and making over pieces, I started with magazine racks…oh the slats are a challenge. I still have to buy one when I see it but I am so out of new ideas:( Larissa, this is so pretty and a brand new way to add life to an outdated piece. Thanks for the inspiration!!

    • Larissa says

You ain’t kiddin! That’s why spraying is the only way for me. Thanks so much for the love!

  3. Christy James says

I thought for sure you were going to remove the slats and use them for something else, but nope, you made it totally cute as it was! And I love that you rocked your jigsaw to make your own sign! XOXO

    • Larissa says

Tempting! 😀 The slats reminded me of the farmhouse crates I love, so I had to let ’em be. Yes, jigsaw is one of my favorite tools for sure! Thanks, Christy.

  4. Shirley says

I just joined your group today and looking forward to your ideas and makeovers. My family, refers to me as “the spray paint queen” but my painting has been out of a can, up til now. I have been a little bit frightened about using a sprayer but you have peaked my interest. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your projects.

    • Larissa says

Yay! So glad to have you along for the ride. I use my sprayer all the time and will be using it today, even. Next week I’ll have a desk makeover showcasing it. Stay tuned, Shirley!

  5. Becky says

What a cute and practical makeover! I really like it! As always, your detail painting skills… ??

  6. Lori says

This is really pretty. I hope you are feeling good!

    • Larissa says

I’m happy to hear it, Lori. I’m having better days, but not totally normal yet. Thanks for asking!

  7. Kaycee says

What a great project Larissa. I agree with you, this is great for kitchens lacking storage.

    • Larissa says

Thanks! I’ve always despised baking sheets and such being stored flat. This makes more sense to me. 😉

  8. Shelley S says

How I wish I had seen this about 2 weeks ago! I ran across a similar magazine rack at my thrift store and stood there for several minutes trying to decide what I wanted it for. Frankly if it had been a 50% off day I’d have it. Oh well, next time! My rolling pin collection has outgrpwn the crocks I have been using.

    • Larissa says

haha. I hate when that happens. 😉 They are so handy to have for many things, but vertical storage totally suits me to a T in the kitchen.

  9. Marie says

You made this magazine rack so much cuter and far more functonal, Larissa. Great idea for it’s new purpose! Love the cute plaque you made for it.
