Farmhouse Kitchen Canisters DIY Style

There’s no doubt that we all have those projects that go sour and we’d rather not mention. Am I right? Ya know, the “just-donate-it-to-the-thrift-store-while-in-super-sleuth-mode” kinda project. I will be the first to confess I’ve given away projects I would have rather thrown in a lake. So, for some reason I felt bad for this set found at the thrift store.  Hang with me as I turn them into a fun set of farmhouse kitchen canisters. yahoo!

My first thought upon seeing them was, “Pinterest fail…bwahahaha”. However, that morphed into, “Well, they tried.” Me and my pitying self always Read more

The functional use of a buffet can’t be denied. They fit easily into almost any room of your home as either a server as intended, or entertainment center, or even retrofitted into a bathroom vanity. This particular one appealed to me for the Read more

Boho Mid Century Modern Dresser

What’s a mom supposed to do when her kids ask to go to the thrift store? Take a deep breath and reply, “Sure, but you know, I just may find something there that I can’t leave and that means hauling it home, etc., etc.” They bat an eyelash, but I’m like…I want my storage space open just for a while! haha. Well, as I walked out to our vehicle I bid farewell to the open spaces and continued on my journey. Last week I showed you what I did with the farmhouse drop-leaf table I found that day. Today, I’m going to show you how a classic piece became a Boho Mid Century Modern dresser. Take a look…

Thrifted Candelabras Meet Shabby Chic

You would think that after all these years that I have been doing trashure hunting and fleatiquing I would be used to finding a diamond in the rough, right? Maybe I should be sorta numb by now to coming upon a rare treat. Thankfully, that doesn’t happen and I still get a jolt when I see things like this set of thrifted candelabras while on an errand.

Set of Thrifted Candelabras Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

Here’s the story as it played out. My kids and I walked into the store and I instantly saw this pair displayed on a table. They were in the middle of the store and I had to wait until some people moved out of the way to be able to get close to them. My brain is saying, “Please don’t see them, I saw them first!” Read more

Queen Anne Table Made New

Here’s the scenario: I walk into the thrift store and take a quick scan of the goods. My path of hunt takes me straight to a leggy gem. Here is the Queen Anne table I spied.

I quickly open the drawer to find “Broyhill” and dove-tailed drawers. Then, I kneel down to look under and find…yep…solid oak. SCORE!! A quick sniff-check is in order to make sure no nasty odors linger. none. Mentally I make note of the wear on top. Nothing I couldn’t handle, right?

Farmhouse Chic Dresser & Best Paint Brushes Ever

Do you know that old country tune by Gene Autry, “Back in the Saddle Again”? I told you when I work that music comes to mind. This ditty became my theme song as this is the first big project I’ve done since my shoulder injury. The challenge ahead of me was to take this damaged dresser and give it a new look to bring it back to life. This time I’m going with a farmhouse chic finish. Check it out…

This was another one of those cases where I purchased something sight unseen. ahem. I had the guy deliver this and another gem I have yet to show you, and I was a bit miffed when I looked close. I was told it was in “great shape and only had minor wear”.

Shabby Chic Details

It’s been a while since I’ve done my own furniture makeover since I just recently helped my son and both of my daughters with their furniture makeovers. It’s not like I haven’t been busy or anything. tsk. One piece that I have finished for a custom order is this Art Deco chest of drawers that has gotten a shabby chic detailing. Yup, it’s not a BEEP, but very similar to my Dumpster Diva.

This lovely piece came from a client, Ruby, who allowed me to share the story of her chest of drawers. Back in 1954, Ruby’s parents bought the entire set for her. It had weathered a small flood, and this is the remaining piece left. She used it in her parent’s house until she married, and then her mother continued to use it until her death in 1991. So, in reality, it has been hers for 61 years. Ruby has decided to give it new life to suit her shabby chic love. How fun is that?!

The chest is in great shape, but has a few cosmetic problems, as well as some structural issues – all totally repairable with Read more

Art Deco Chest with a French Twist

Do you ever make a vow or promise to yourself and then for some reason decide to break it? sigh… I just did and I always ask myself…”Why did I do that??” Enter in this Art Deco chest…

My vow was this: to never, EVER, under any circumstances will I buy another piece of furniture to work on THAT IS PAINTED.

Look at what I bought (yes, actually paid for) off of Craigslist.

Blue Art Deco Chest Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

Isn’t it cute? You know I’m a sucker for these waterfall pieces, especially since the first vanity I did had me hooked. I only spent a bit for this Art Deco chest. However, keep in mind, free and cheap mean work. nuff said.

Many on Instagram saw this and said, “I like the blue!” So do I (cause you know I’m all about blue), but someone else painted this and there are flaws. For instance, the top of the chest has cracked veneer underneath, the paint job was so-so, and more was wrong like the broken casters, etc.

Otherwise though, this is a solid piece with not only dove-tailed drawer face joints, but also those dove tails at the back.

They just don’t make them like this anymore – which is why I had a regression in my vow. Do you blame me? These are the sort of things that make my heart go pitter-pat.

Sooo…I started out using my sander to see how those veneer cracks would hold up. Low and behold what I figured would happen did. Read more

Update Furniture with these Simple Steps

It’s been a while since I’ve worked on a larger piece of furniture, so it feels good to get back in the saddle again. Often when my husband is making a delivery to cities that are an hour or so away, I always jump on Craigslist to see if there is something in the same area that would be a candidate for a makeover. While delivering the settee I just finished, I had him pick up this Mid Century dresser. I thought this piece would be a perfect candidate to show you how to update furniture in a few easy steps.

This dresser is as solid as they come with a stout design, sturdy dove-tailed drawers, and ornate details. I like the design of this one because it appears to have nine drawers, but actually only has six. Plenty of storage and space in there. The only thing wrong with it was that the finish had been worn (that 1960’s speckled veneer-type finish), and an update would do this brown beast justice. Read more
