Vintage Chest Gets Modern Makeover

Each month I have fun participating in our Themed Furniture Makeovers, and this time around I’m letting my oldest son step up to the plate with his latest project piece, a vintage chest of drawers. AND…I have an awesome giveaway for you!

I totally encourage my six children to join me in my work and they are always chomping at the bit to have some fun with paint and learn a trade. When I went to pick up the primitive cupboard I just used to show you how to update old wood with stain, the lady also offered us this vintage chest. My furniture lovin’ self could have taken it as my own, but I offered it to my son and he chose to purchase it. (he knows to bring his wallet along when mama is on an adventure. hee hee)

Art Deco Chest with a French Twist

Do you ever make a vow or promise to yourself and then for some reason decide to break it? sigh… I just did and I always ask myself…”Why did I do that??” Enter in this Art Deco chest…

My vow was this: to never, EVER, under any circumstances will I buy another piece of furniture to work on THAT IS PAINTED.

Look at what I bought (yes, actually paid for) off of Craigslist.

Isn’t it cute? You know I’m a sucker for these waterfall pieces, especially since the first vanity I did had me hooked. I only spent a bit for this Art Deco chest. However, keep in mind, free and cheap mean work. nuff said.

Many on Instagram saw this and said, “I like the blue!” So do I (cause you know I’m all about blue), but someone else painted this and there are flaws. For instance, the top of the chest has cracked veneer underneath, the paint job was so-so, and more was wrong like the broken casters, etc.

Otherwise though, this is a solid piece with not only dove-tailed drawer face joints, but also those dove tails at the back.

They just don’t make them like this anymore – which is why I had a regression in my vow. Do you blame me? These are the sort of things that make my heart go pitter-pat.

Sooo…I started out using my sander to see how those veneer cracks would hold up. Low and behold what I figured would happen did. Read more

It’s fun to take a stroll down memory lane and every Tuesday this month my blogger friends and I are digging into our archives and pulling out some of our favorite makoevers for Trash to Treasure Transformation Tuesday. For this week, I have decided to focus on some of my favorite rocking chair makeovers, including one in particular.

Best of Trash to Treasure Transformations | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

Mid-Century Modern Sunburst Table

It’s a wonderful thing to have people think of you when they have some sort of item they’d like to part with. Often, in my case, those unwanted pieces are furniture related. My typical protocol is to check it over for quality and resale prowess before taking it on, then I hand it off to one of my six kids. Just like this Mid-Century modern table we were given.

My desire is to show my children how they can take something unwanted and make it new, but also how to make it in this world by earning a living and staying out of debt. You can see more of their work in this post dedicated to their work. This time around, the recipient was my second oldest daughter , Miss S.

This table is really awesome and had to have been a statement piece in its day. I found the label and looked up the company. Seems they had some pretty cool stuff!

Funky design AND  the top swivels – how cool is that? The legs had been damaged and would need repaired, but other than that this is a solid piece that would shine once again.

To say my daughter was stoked, was an understatement. Read more

Mid Century Modern Furniture Color Fun

Last week, I showed you this Mid Century Modern chest of drawers I found on Craigslist. It just needed a little TLC and a pop of color to bring it up-to-date.

I also mentioned that it wasn’t until after we got the chest home that I saw the owner had just listed the matching credenza. Umm…duh. (sorry. I hate when my kids use that word, but this situation perfectly fits it)Why he didn’t tell us he would be selling it too, I’ll never know, but we went back on the road again to pick up this classic Mid Century Bassett piece.

This top was the worst part…damage where the mirror had sat, chemical stains that I hoped could be hidden, and oodles of dents and dings. Someone had even made screw holes in the top ends! Read more

The inspiration for my makeover was this French Provincial set I found a few months back on Craigslist. I originally stuck it in my shop as a custom request, but quickly took it back out when I saw the upcoming theme.
