French Country Blue ~ My Craigslist Score

You know I love a good furniture makeover, so what could be better than one day a month dedicated to themed furniture makeovers? Wahoo! Today’s theme is FRENCH, and ooh la la, I’m ready to play with my French country blue.

My blogging friends and I have created some wonderful inspiration and eye-candy for you with our French makeovers, so be sure to check out all their fantastic efforts below.

The inspiration for my makeover was this French Provincial set I found a few months back on Craigslist. I originally stuck it in my shop as a custom request, but quickly took it back out when I saw the upcoming theme.

Chalky Finish Paint to Create an Old World Look

Do you love a sweet love story? I do, especially when it has a happy ending. Let me give you some background before I show you how I used chalky finish paint to create an old world look.

A couple of weeks ago, we took our family out for a fun day of hiking, picnics, and all around quality time in honor of one of our daughter’s birthdays. Before we set out on our jaunt, we decided to stop into Goodwill to see if we could find the birthday girl a camera case since she had lost hers at the zoo the week prior.

We were able to find a hot pink case, perfect for a little girl, then after that I decided to quickly make my normal rounds.  I say quickly because although my kids are used to shopping with me, my hubby doesn’t care to treasure hunt, and because I had promised myself no new pieces until I emptied my stash and built the work table I’ve been craving. And that’s when I spied this…

Diamond in the Rough Thrifted Dresser is damaged and missing parts, but with a little TLC, it now showcases an Old World Look by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces

I literally gasped and said, “Oh no.” I gave a silent point to my husband and I could see his face say, “Here we go again.” Hoping the price tag was too much so that I couldn’t buy it, I crept over that jungle of weight equipment to find it was marked $100. Sigh…thankfully I had a 35% off coupon burning a hole in my pocket. tsk. Guess my work table would have to wait. My hubby agreed this piece was coming home with us. Read more

Vintage Dressing Table French Country Makeover

There’s no mistaking that I am drawn to dressing tables and vanities. They’re so unique and full of elegance. At some point they have fallen to the wayside as far as being a piece of furniture on demand, but they are quickly making a come-back as a much desired addition to the bedroom decor. I can see why. They’re functional as a desk, mirror for morning makeovers, and a fun place for a lady to call her own.

It wasn’t too long ago that I acquired this vintage dressing table off of Craigslist, and it actually ended up being sold by a friend and neighbor from just around the block. Although it may look like an antique, it’s really a Mid Century Modern piece made to look as if it is has been around for ages. Quality made with dove-tailed drawers and gorgeous veneer, this dark beauty was in great shape for the most part, but did have some wear and missing parts.

The overall finish had held up well on top, but what really struck me was that the pulls were plastic. Really? Did they have to go there on this beautiful piece? Some were busted, of course, and I knew that this girl needed some new jewelry (aka. hardware) Read more

Table Transformations ~ 20 Different Styles & Eras

Today I thought it would be fun to take a stroll down memory lane…or table lane. So many pieces of furniture run through my shop and I never get the chance to tell you about each one. I thought it would be fun to focus on tables and show you how my photography and skills have changed in the last two years because we’re always learning and growing, right? Check out my table transformations.

I’ve put together 20 of some of the tables that have come through my shop for a whirl through the past.  Ready?  Let’s go!  *consider yourself warned this is photo heavy!!

20 Different Table Transformations by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodiglpieces

I’m going to start with a library table I happened upon while looking for furniture for the home we had just moved into back in 2003. (I told you I was going waaaay back)

They were having half off on some of the items that had been there too long and I spied this antique pine table. I needed something to occupy our long walls, and though I thought this one was too long, I just had to have it because the price tag was right – $20.

20 Different Table Transformations by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodiglpieces

We made it fit in our living room for several years, but eventually it was hid behind our upright grand piano standing on end. Sad, I know, but we needed the space for other things. It wasn’t until two years ago I decided to give it a makeover because the top was so badly marked up and it needed to go to a new home where it would be loved. Read more

Creating Layers of Love with Paint and Stain

Do you swoon when you see layers of paint and stain on the side of a barn with time-worn wear, or better yet, on a piece of furniture?  I mean, there’s a story there. That chippy goodness tells the life of that piece, and what travels it’s had – those layers of love.  No, I’m not crazy, but maybe a bit head-over heels with appreciation for the past. Let me show you how I go about creating layers of love.

Those layers  I mentioned above speak to me telling me a bit about each change in life.  For instance, the life of a table could be this: a table was built and stained and sold by the original creator. Then the new owner wore out the top with her kids meals and decided to throw on a coat of white paint to freshen it up. Eventually that same table heads to a garage sale, where a man purchases it to put in his garage and throws on a coat of blue paint because white gets too dirty….you get the idea!

DIY: Creating Time-worn Effect with Layers of Paint by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

When I am blessed enough to have such a piece come across my path, I try to find out as much as I can about it’s history so that when it’s no longer mine I can continue the story.  But…sometimes it’s fun to create my own story by using paint and stain make something appear to have had a history.

Furniture Makeover ~ Blue for Baby

It’s always so exciting when a baby is on the way. Our family will be growing in the next few months. Take a breath because I’m not the one who’s expecting. ha! My sister-in-law is expecting their first baby soon, and as far as we know it’s a girl. This new babe will give my 6 kids another cousin to play with, and someone for us to adore and love.  As a gift to my SIL, I offered to refinish a dresser for the baby’s room.  As it turns out, she had already found a dresser style on Pinterest that she loved and was hoping to replicate. Now we have a furniture makeover in the works. woot!

I’ve got to be honest that I had no idea how awesome this whole furniture makeover would turn out.  You see, this month’s themed makeover has the subject, “Inspired By” – meaning to redo a piece of furniture in the styling of another piece we’ve seen on the internet, movie, etc.  I had NO inspiration because I have NO time to peruse such frivolous things like other blogs, Pinterest, and… what’s a movie??

As it turns out, I was thankful to not only be able to give my SIL and her husband this gift, but also to fulfill the themed makeover quota. (she giggles wickedly)

Enter in this gorgeous aqua blue dresser by Sharon at Lilikoi Joy.  You know me and my Craigslist love, not to mention that it’s aqua! (My entire blog post about that color here – yes I LOVE it).

Antique Serpentine Dresser Gets Much Needed Furniture Makeover for Baby with Inspiration by a Blue Beauty by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
Sharon scored this piece on Craigslist and did a fantastic job of giving this lovely serpentine dresser a facelift to suit her style.  You just have to head on over to her blog to read the full story.
Antique Serpentine Dresser Gets Much Needed Makeover for Baby with Inspiration by a Blue Beauty by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpiecesWhen my mother-in-law came over for a visit one day, she showed me the picture of the dresser that they had in their garage and was one that my SIL had used in her bedroom as a child.

How sweet it would be to give her back that dresser for her own sweet daughter – in a much improved state for sure.
Antique Serpentine Dresser Gets Much Needed Makeover for Baby with Inspiration by a Blue Beauty by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
This forlorn dresser was missing a leg, had a broken swag on one of the drawer pulls, and had been painted white so long ago that it looked yellow.

I don’t know about you, but that serpentine style is one of my favorites (I’m talking about that wavy look to the front).  Swoon!

Although this dresser needed some love, it is such a well-built antique and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. After doing a much needed wood putty treatment to the cabinet, I grabbed my best friend, orbital sander, and went to work.  It was hard to not want to yank all that paint off and restore this beauty back to it’s original wood state.  I mean, we’re talking solid oak with a grain to die for.

Once I had given the dresser enough “teeth” for the paint to adhere, I set out working on the pulls.  It was such a shame that only one of them was damaged and we couldn’t put them all back on.  I normally don’t paint solid brass, but since the inspiration dresser had a painted chrome finish to it’s pulls, I went with a brushed nickel paint by Rustoleum instead.  Ouch…I painted antique brass….gulp. That’s a new one for me!  deep breath.  I mean, just look at those escutcheons.  So dainty and ornate.

Since the new nickel paint looked too new, I used my go-to ebony Rub ‘N’ Buff to create a patina on the pulls. This stuff is great, I tell ya!
Antique Serpentine Dresser Gets Much Needed Makeover for Baby with Inspiration by a Blue Beauty by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
Back to the dresser, since I was short one pull, I decided to fill the holes in the top two drawers and then drill new holes for a center-mounted pull instead.  I love the glass effect and was able to find some locally.  In addition to that upgrade, I had to repair a back leg so that it could hold a caster again. Thankfully, my in-laws had saved the pieces and I was able to grab yet another caster from that lovely rusty, crusty gift I spoke of here.

On to the fun part.  My SIL was hoping to use the exact same color that Sharon did, but since I already had a similar color in my stash that I used on my Mid-Century Modern set, I used that instead.  Oh yeah… my $7 Home Depot seconds paint wins again!  I brushed on several coats to the sides of the cabinet and drawers, but used a foam roller to get a nice smooth finish to the top.  Yes, it’s that time of year, when snow flies and my house fills with furniture.

Antique Serpentine Dresser Gets Much Needed Makeover for Baby with Inspiration by a Blue Beauty by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
To achieve the glazed look that Sharon used, I whipped out my homemade glaze that I’ve used on my garage door and several other pieces.  I don’t typically buy into the commercial stuff if I can make it myself – I know, I’m funny that way.
Antique Serpentine Dresser Gets Much Needed Makeover for Baby with Inspiration by a Blue Beauty by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
The typical store-bought glazing simply has an ingredient in it that allows you to have more work time before setting.  I’ve got glazing down so that I don’t need to worry about it drying too fast.  Just brush on and then wipe off until you get the desired effect.  No need for a $9 bottle. tsk.

For extra durability, I gave it a hand-rubbed wax topcoat.  I will be completely honest that the original paint was on there sooo good that I don’t know if I did the new coat justice.  A hindsight was to have either taken the paint all the way down, or used a paint gripping primer instead.  Since the snow is flying here in the northeast, I’m limited on my outdoor time for sanding and I didn’t want to use that highly toxic primer in my home.  So, if my SIL finds that that paint isn’t holding up, I’ve offered to redo it again in the summer.  Stay tuned.

Here it is!  What do you think?

Mid Century Modern Dresser Makeover

My style is typically French farmhouse / shabby chic / cottage, but I seriously dig the lines and design of the Mid Century Modern era, like the console and Brasilia chest of drawers I’ve done. When my kids are watching flashback episodes of The Brady Bunch or Benji, etc. I’m gazing at the wonderful furniture that is featured.  Do you do that? Let me show you my Mid Century Modern dresser makeover in honor of those awesome times.

While doing my typically fun searches on Craigslist I came across this funkified bedroom dresser set.
Vintage MCM Mid Century Modern Dresser Set from Craigslist Gets Blue Makeover by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
Apparently, someone was cleaning out an estate from a family member and wanted to “get rid of this ugly furniture” – translated in junker lingo, “SCORE!”.
I love to hear that type of statement coming from a seller and I try to put on my poker face and play the game. Most times I feel bad that they don’t know what gem they have, but in the end it’s win-win. They get rid of their “junk” and I get to play. tee hee. This set was in excellent shape, but, of course, the top surfaces had the most wear. All the dove-tailed drawers worked smoothly and were in great condition.

I grabbed my handy orbital sander and went to town. The top of the console dresser was so worn that the finish came off so easily.

Funny note: A giant headache with a nine drawer dresser is figuring out where the drawers are supposed to go after you take them out. This previous owner has a genius moment and numbered the frame and drawers at some point. THANK YOU!

Since the drawers were in excellent shape, I decided to sand and refinish them with a dark stain and poly topcoat. I found the manufacturer stamp on the bottom that read, “Japan, June 8, 1961”, another part of the story.

One of my favorite aspects of the MCM style is the lack of drawer pulls. Innovation and creativity were used to make these pieces function with ease. This set was no different with the inset places for a finger-grab hold. To draw attention to that detail, I painted with a white semi-gloss.

For the cabinet, I went to my handy dandy stash and pulled another favorite “seconds” paint of mine. Can’t beat paying $7 for a gorgeous blue semi-gloss from Home Depot.  I love it…sigh.

Not sure what could be better about this Mid Century Modern dresser makeover than the offset mirror. It’s funky, different, unique and I’m all about that.
Vintage MCM Mid Century Modern Dresser Set from Craigslist Gets Blue Makeover by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces
Since this is a set, I wanted to stage them together and lack the wall space to do so (I’m working on a remedy for that!). I originally set them in front of my garage as I’ve done with other pieces, but it just didn’t do them any justice.  So, I decided to play in Photoshop and create a faux setting. I’m selling this set in my shop (SOLD) and wanted to present them in a clean way as the pieces themselves are a clean design.

Aqua Blue Table ~ My Favorite Furniture Color

Want to see my favorite aqua blue table makeover? Recently, a client of mine asked for a pair of nightstands to go with a dresser she had purchased from me, and so began the hunt.  I love this part.  I mean, what could be better than shopping for furniture? A new little flea market had opened downtown a few weeks ago and I wanted to stop in and see if they had anything suitable.  They ended up being closed, but when I drove a couple stores down I noticed another place that I had seen before, but never stopped in.

WHOA…when I walked in the door I turned and said to my kids with excitement in my voice, “I really shouldn’t have found this place.” Furniture everywhere, and not your department store stuff. This is old, vintage, and absolutely lovely gems.

The guy had priced things accurately for their worth and no nightstands for my client, but that’s when I saw this beauty.

If you follow me on social media, I shared this picture with hesitation because I wasn’t sure if I would stick to my intentions of painting.  Most of the time no one wants a stained piece – painted wins out every time.

There’s no way I could paint that gorgeous top, so I sanded it down and refreshed that old stain with a new coating, then finished with several coats of poly.

Now for the base.  It took me a day to decide if I should paint.  I really love wood, but those hand carved details were just begging to be drawn out. After much fretting, I dove in with my eyes closed and cringing.  Seriously.

Can I just say that I LOVE how it turned out!

I’ve already had people asking me about the color I used and the ironic part of this story is, I don’t know. This paint was one of my first scores from Home Depot’s “seconds” stash and I nearly fainted when I saw it. I have added it to the collection I’m creating for one day owning my own line of paint – we’ll see.

I ration this color out for special projects like my Art Deco waterfall dressing table
