Tripod Floor Lamp from Curbside Finds

I feel the need for a #trashure makeover coming on! What’s #trashure you say? I first wrote about it a few years ago in this post and is put simply: Making treasure out of trash. Or in other words, “One man’s trash is another woman’s treasure”. Hee hee.  Therefore, this Trash to Treasure Tuesday I am sharing how my curbside finds became a tripod floor lamp with some funkified DIY fun. Also, my gal friends are sharing their projects too, so be sure to check them out below.

WHOA

Back about a year ago, my friend, Mandy, called me after she spied a settee set out for trash. Likewise, I gave it a brand new look you can read about in this makeover reveal (it’s a good one!). What she didn’t tell me was that there was a whole bunch of goodness along with it! This is what else I snagged.

In addition, the bed post turnings became new in this post, 4 x 4’s, a set of Queen Anne legs, a surveyors tripod, lampshade, and a one-legged wonder footstool that I also made over HERE. For now, my focus is on that surveyor’s goodness because I have had it on my brain to turn it into a tripod floor lamp and lamp it shall be. woot!

DIY TIME

First, I had to figure out how to get all those legs to stay together. I know the original design had a sort of “T” shape to hold them together. While I could have cut one, I wanted a simpler effect for various reasons. However, instead I grabbed some of the dowel I keep in my stash and got to work.

My husband bought me this cool angle finder tool for Christmas that helps me figure out inside and outside angles. I needed 3 sections and this thing helped me immensely. Remember my motto? “Tools over Jewels“.

Then, I also used it to figure the angles between the dowel and the tripod leg. I cut wedges to keep them supported and attached with wood glue, brads, and screws. Likewise, once I have the angles figured, it was just a matter of putting it all together.

Before I did that though, I wanted to treat the parched wood and my go-to for refreshing is boiled linseed oil (or hemp oil, or tung oil). The legs were needing some nourishment and they soaked it right up. You can see how I revived my antique pew, a cedar chest, and a pair of theater seats too.

THE REVEAL

After all was prepped, I just needed to use my lamp wire kit to assemble and add a lamp shade. Now, take a peek at my repurposed surveyor’s tripod floor lamp.
