Upcycled Window Planter for Indoor or Out

It’s the season of gardening and all the wonderful things that comes with spring, followed by summer. I get so excited of blooms popping up and birdsong welcoming me each day. During this time, we’ve been repairing and restoring our garden shed. So, of course, I couldn’t toss out these awesome old windows. I’m inspired to create an upcycled window planter with them.

If you want to see where we’ve started with our garden shed, you can take a peek at my first improvements HERE. Our goal was to finish it last summer, but a hot mess was dropped in our laps, so we are now able to get back to it.

Also, despite the extremely wet spring, we’re able to get the major repairs done. I’ll be sharing our reveal when done, so stay tuned. Okay, back to those windows peeking out of my shed mess.

DIY TIME

First, let me say that both of the windows had broken panes. My kids did them in last summer, so I knew I needed to give them a new purpose once we removed them. They’re still relatively solid, but needed some TLC. I begin by taking out the old putty and glazier’s points.

It’s a tedious job, but kinda like therapy too. Once I remove the remnants , I clean it up and add a whitewash of paint to match the existing chippy white. The finished face of the window is raw wood, which means whomever installed these did them backwards. oops… I wanted to dress it up and age them a bit.

NEXT STEPS

Next, it’s time to add the planter part to my upcycled window planters. A few months back, I found this set of brand new galvanized planters at the thrift store. Each one retailed at $12. I can guarantee I didn’t pay but a third of that for each one. Yay!

However, I don’t care for the stenciled rooster on them – kinda too “made in ….” look. No worries, I’ll just make them my own. tee hee.

THE REVEAL

Here are my upcycled window planters ready for some garden goodness.

Can you tell I had fun with them? I decided to use all 3 galvanized planters, so that meant I needed to upcycle each window differently. The first one I added chicken wire to each pane, plus the planters.

To see all the lushness of nature really sends my heart to pitter-pat. Don’t you agree? And., for me, seeing my #trashure windows made new is also super fun.

For the second window, I added a couple of trellis parts from clematis I planted in my garden. I couldn’t let those go to waste either. (big surprise)

I love them both! From a distance, I prefer the horizontal one, but once closer, I adore the clematis fence panels – though the chicken wire is very cute as well.
