Y’all it’s so exciting to begin each month with some of the best bloggers out there. The second Tuesday of each month is Trash to Treasure time where we share our latest creative adventures with you. You’ll see their projects in a bit. However, check out what I have for you today. I’m in the mood for a vintage curio cabinet makeover! {{happy dance}}

My apologies to those who love this ridiculously silly faux finish they repeatedly did to furniture of this Mid Century Modern era. Actually, this is made of solid wood, but the manufacturers felt the need for a faux look. Unfortunately, to me, it looks like it has insect poo all over it…just sayin’.

The temptation is too great to not have super fun with this, right? I’m in the mood for a color makeover!

DIY TIME

First, I remove the glass in the front, the glass shelf, and the mirror from the back. All but one won’t be going back on. Then, you probably can’t see it, but this cabinet is dirty and needs a thorough cleaning. To do that, I use a vinegar/water ratio of 1:2. This make the surface prepped for paint and rids it of any residue. No blucky chemicals needed.

Next, it’s time for some color fun. I’m after some colors that are not my norm on here, but I love any and all colors. For whatever reason, fuchsia is  my vision for this piece. A blast of color that will tell a story. As a matter of fact, this is a brand I buy from a local mom & pop hardware store. The color is Gypsy Pink by The Real Milk Paint Co. Isn’t that color fun? It not only reminds me of my 80’s childhood, but also demonstrates there are so many wonderful colors in God’s creation.

To use the paint, you just put equal parts water and powder in the canister and shake to mix. Easy-peasy! This paint is a medium that allows your artistic side to come out. Additionally, make it chunky or smooth, just let it tell a story.

After that, I dig into my stash and pull out a set of colors to blend into even more fun. Ever tried to mix your own paint? It’s truly an adventure.

Here’s a peek at the first coats on the vintage curio cabinet. woot!

Meanwhile the paint cures and I work on cutting a new backing. It’s a balmy 12° high in our part of the world this time of year, so I limit my building during the winter.

Once the luan is cut, I add a wallpaper I’ve used in furniture makeovers before – this antique radio and this entertainment center.

Finally, before I call it quits, I add more layers of color and then finish with waxes for a protective finish.

THE REVEAL

Are you ready to see this vintage curio cabinet now? Meet my new hottie pink friend. Ta-da!

That color really spices up this boring, dated cabinet. I wasn’t so much against the glass in the doors, but I wanted to make this have less of a stuffy vibe and a little more fun. Yes, I altered the mirror because I staged this in my boys’ bedroom which is a scary sight…trust me. As a matter of fact, the mirror is in excellent condition.

However, since the mirrored back was damaged, the new backing adds a fun twist, plus makes for a great backdrop. Likewise, notice I kept the glass shelf. That way, the light from above can shine down through.

Also, even better is that I had the perfect knob in my stash to finish off this knob-less piece. To tell the truth, if you’re not a stash kinda guy/gal, you should be because it pays off all.the.time.
