Recently, I have finally achieved my goal of getting rid of every piece of furniture in my stash except the one I would be working on. Wahoo!! It’s been a long journey to get them done, especially when good friend find you pieces curbside or bring them to you with wonderful intentions. Stay tuned to see my renovated shop. eep! I couldn’t wait until I could get back onto the search for a new project, and here is the first one that spoke to me. Time to give it some modern style.
A classic Mid Century Modern chest of drawers. The clean lines of this style draw me in every time. Likewise, check out those inlaid star pieces on the top drawer. Cool…This particular piece wasn’t in bad shape at all.
It just has some wear with deep gouges to the top surface, and missing veneer on the cabinet. My classic makeover is to paint the cabinet white to add modern style. After making the needed repairs and do a stain /paint treatment to the drawers like these past projects:
DIY TIME
It gives then a new look that makes them suitable for modern-day style. So, that’s how I decided to makeover this chest. First, I repaired the missing veneer and gouge marks with wood filler and sanded it down.
For the white part of the cabinet, I used a semi-gloss, and used my method on how to apply a stroke-free finish. Then, I sanded down to bare wood the top drawer and stained using my Early American stain. Next, for the other 3 drawers, I decided to use this beautiful blue semi-gloss that I found in the seconds department.
Isn’t it pretty? I have a thing for blue in my makeovers. Also, this color would be the perfect contrast to the white cabinet and stained top drawer.
THE REVEAL
What do you think?
The color is so striking and really draws out the details of those unique pulls and geometric design.
Likewise, those inlaid star shapes are such sweet touch and create more dimension to this classic piece. Even those original brass pulls are just enough subtle contrast to draw your eye.
Funny, but annoying thing, is that after driving 45 minutes to pick this up, I got back online after finishing this chest to find the owner just listed the matching credenza {{head smack}}. Guess where we’re headed today? sigh…ah well. It’ll be another project in the works soon. Stay tuned!
UPDATE: In addition, here’s the credenza and I know you’ll love the makeover this one got too…head on over to see!
If you love this piece and would like for your own, you can find it available (SOLD) in my online store.
In addition, pin and share to inspire others to give those tired Mid Century Modern pieces another look. ♥

What a beauty. The blue is so striking against the white. And those pieces of wood coming down the front really make an impact.
Larissa says
Thanks, Mary! I love wood and paint combinations…it creates some drama. (Like I need more of that in my life…tee hee)

You took an unwanted piece of furniture and hit it out of the ballpark. It looks wonderful.

You have such a discerning eye! You make really good calls on how to transform a piece of furniture. I ALWAYS like what you do with an item. Beautiful work. You really nailed that mid-century dresser!
Larissa says
I did debate on the color a bit because I really like that green I used before, but it was time to change it up. 🙂 Thank you!

Oh my gosh Larissa, I can’t believe they wouldn’t have told you they had the matching credenza available! I like how you stepped outside of the MCM Box with this one – such a pretty color. Another one that won’t last long on Etsy. Pinned to share.

Larissa- What a find! I love your Mid Century piece. 🙂 Beautiful color combination and I LOVE that you left the wood grain. It’s a stunner! Thank you for sharing it with us at Friday’s Furniture Fix!.. Carrie, Thirty Eighth Street

You bet, Carrie! Thank you!

Wow! This looks beautiful. I really like the blue you chose — it works very nicely. I’m about to paint a MCM set, which I never do. Usually my husband can save the wood. But these guys have damage on the top. I think we can save the drawers. I hope my efforts come close to your superb work. I saw your link at Friday’s Furniture Fix.
Larissa says
So happy you stopped by, Ann Marie! Yes, the can be saved with some elbow grease, but that silly veneer is almost always damaged. Sounds like you have a great potential piece! Did you see the matching credenza I just posted? So fun!

Hi Larissa,
Love, love, love it! The colors are stunning and the way you painted it is sooo creative. As said above, the brown accent on the drawers ties everything together. Wow!
I just scored a little Dixie nightstand at my local Goodwill and am not quite sure how to redo it. Can I email or text you a picture for your advise. I will be keeping this one for myself!
Larissa says
Thanks, Gwen! It begged to be brightened up and I had fun. 😀 Feel free to email me. I’d love help!
Jeana says
What color is the blue? I love it!
Larissa says
It was a seconds paint I had from the home improvement store.
