Check out what I found… a kitchen storage box set perfect for a makeover.
At first, I didn’t know there was a set as the garlic box was taped inside the larger onion one. Two-for-one deal, yay!
Honestly, there’s nothing wrong with this set except that they’re so modern and new that they don’t fit my time-worn decor. It just means I can create my own style with this blank, black slate. Let’s have some DIY fun, shall we?
FIRST STEPS
First, since this set is made of a thin wood, I see potential to bring out the warmth of the wood with leaving a bit of paint behind to give it an aged appeal using my sander.
Then, as soon as I’m done sanding, I use my reactive stain in a weathered look to naturally age the wood using the tannins in that wood. Just like I did on this vintage Kroehler buffet and this antique table, and dozens of other projects. However, the best part is that you apply the stain and let it cure. That’s it. No wiping, no extra coats – DONE.
Next, I take the box bases and lightly hand-sand them to give them tooth for paint. For that step, I’m using this Serenity Blue that I’ve used in these past posts. Likewise, it’s the softest blue chalky paint that will help me achieve the look I’m after.
Last, as an added twist, I want to draw out those “onion” and “garlic” embossed designs. In order to do that, I want to create lines what direct your eyes to that spot.
STORAGE & STYLE
Finally, my little kitchen storage box makeover is complete with a new look and plenty of function.
Now, they are suited to my decor, but honestly, they could have been redone in any style or kept just as-is.
I’m smitten with the wood lids and also the effect with the change-up of paint as well. What would you have done with this set? Do tell!
