Upcycled Cast Iron Sign

What’s new, everybody? Or better yet, what’s left? It’s the next round of these curbside finds (aka. #trashure) and my eye is focuses on that red piece. Would you have nabbed it? It’s intriguing, at least to me, and definitely not trash-worthy. I’m thinking an upcycled cast iron sign sounds fun. Let’s do this!

As you can see in the photo, this is my original loot stash. Below are the projects I’ve made with them so far:

Okay, so when I grabbed that ornate piece to bring home, I figured it to be cast iron and still do. However, in my search to figure out what it came from, I still don’t know. My best guess is that it came off a small cast stove as it definitely has spots where it slid down over screws/bolts and was meant to be lifted off.

In addition, it’s concave to have formed to rest over something. Let me hear your guesses!

CREATIVE CASTING

With that in mind, I also pulled these mini wood houses in the enamel pot with rolling pins in the photo above as well.

They’re cute and will suit my purpose. Per my usual, I head out to my stash to see what I have that I can use to create my vision. Then, I find this remnant piece of reclaimed oak that is already perfectly sized for my purposes. Do you see the enamel pot with rolling pins hiding below? They’re waiting their turn. mwahahaha.

In order for me to make this misfit menagerie fit together, I use a self-tapping metal screw and drill to make holes for screws.

Next, once I have the holes, I attach the piece only to get it lined up. However, after that, I remove it and give it a coat of white spray enamel.

Meanwhile the paint dries, I set about to change the houses to my liking in muted tones.

Also, I use a reactive stain on the oak board to give it even more aged appeal in a weathered finish.

Finally, once all is painted, I assemble my upcycled cast iron sign and it’s ready to go.
