Are you in the mood for a furniture makeover? This vintage French Provincial desk is in need of an update to fix the broken and bring a refreshed feel. Let’s get our DIY on! *giveaway alert!!

French Provincial Desk Before Makeover by Larissa of Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces

However, before I go any further, I need to give a huge shout-out to my friend, Mandy, who turned this gem over to me. I promised her to do right by her and her ministry. You can see what she does in this past post HERE. She used this desk in her home to create a study space to homeschool her children.

DIY TIME

It’s time for a new look, wouldn’t you say? If you look close, you’ll see a broken drawer pull, chipped up paint, and a sort of jerry-rigged panel fixed to the back to hold the legs on to the rest.

The legs had been painted in a glossy black that wasn’t too bad. However, brush strokes and a few drips were evident. The top had been reupholstered in this fabric that is…meh.

Winter-Ready Car Care ~ Chemical Free

I have some exciting news for you and it isn’t that winter is on the way. However, before winter sets in it’s a great time to get your vehicle ready for all the muck and grime it may see through the season. Break out your steam machine and get the job done chemical-free. It’s easy, budget-friendly and so very effective. Let me show you winter-ready car care can be done in a snap. I’m so excited to share this with you today for one reason…an answer to prayer.

Our Used (new to us) Truck | prodgialpieces.com

A few months ago I told our story of debt and how we are working hard to get completely free of it. It’s not easy to admit setbacks, but we are choosing to share so we can bless you by our journey. Not only have we been taking care of debt, but also trying to keep up with our needs. We have been slowly saving up for a used (but new to us) vehicle. As a family of 8 there are only so many vehicles out there that hold everyone at the same time. I told the story of our current

Top 10 Makeovers of 2015

As this past year flashes by and we are already a few days into 2016, I wanted to take a minute to look at my year in review and share my Top 10 Makeovers of 2015. Fun, right? It is amazing to see God working in my life and of my family. I want to share the blessings with you and offer you a surprise for helping me out with a little something later on.

Let’s get this party started!!

Top 10 Makeovers of 2015 | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

Crazy as this sounds, my #1 top viewed post of 2015 was not a makeover, but a tip. Yep, a last-minute, grab-my-camera, and why-not-share-my-quirky-habit type of post. My “Natural Ant Control with Grits” post blew up and was by far number one. I guess I’m not the only one with the pesky little critters each spring.

Stop the Ants! Natural Ant Control Using GRITS | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces

A bit of controversy arose about my post and several naysayers appeared, but I tell ya, it works. Whether it kills them or just feeds them so they don’t come in…I don’t care. I like ants, just not in my home, right?

The #2 post was none other than

Channel Back Chair ~ An Upholstery Adventure

Today I’m excited to be able to show you a project that has been brewing in my mind for about 2 years, until this month’s themed makeover assignment was “chairs”.  It’s safe to say that to get something done for myself is never at the forefront of my agenda, but this time I FINALLY got a piece of furniture done for me!!  This is my first makeover for myself since my free TV armoire 3 years ago, which brings me to a total of 2 pieces for us. Enter in this vintage channel back chair.

I picked up this sweet piece at a garage sale for $3…eeep!!  It wasn’t something I had planned to tackle at first because I loved that original fabric.  I even tried to clean it – mistake.  It made the color bleed and it looked even worse.  After that, I stuck it in the corner of our bedroom and used it quite frequently.

That gorgeous chenille fabric was so utterly dirty and had been worn with love all over.  See those holes in the seat up above?  The seat was originally tufted and missing several buttons, and my kids and cat also had a hayday with this chair.

The back panel was the only part in decent shape.  My kids loved to crawl behind it and rub the raised surface of the fabric because it was so soft.

I told my husband that this winter when the snow was flying outside, my little ol’ self was staying inside to work and planning to tackle two chairs.  One of them was this one, a channel back chair.

“The Other” Purple Chair Makeover

Let me introduce you to my other purple lady, the one on the right. She has fantastic curves, tufted design, and itchy, scratchy, indoor/outdoor carpet-like upholstery.  Wait….those things don’t go together, right?

Can I just say that this chair was so uncomfortable that not one of my 6 kids, my husband, or me, wanted to sit on either one of them with thin clothes or bare flesh touching that fabric…ouch! No wonder someone sold them.  It was time for a chair makeover.

This pair had completely different lines and spoke to me in different vibes.  The one on the left looked to be farmhouse girl, while the other just screamed, “Dress me up please!”  You didn’t know furniture can speak did you?  tsk.
I saved the best for last with this pair.  The farmhouse girl got her feedsack makeover last week and caused quite a stir among some folks on Hometalk’s Facebook page where it was featured.  Don’t get me wrong, the majority of people have rave reviews, but boy were there some haters.  And I quote, “Oh no, no, no” or how about, “Oh good Lord.”  Really?
I found that most of those naysayers were older women who must have not had anything to do but criticize.  It was a fun time of banter though.  As one Facebooker said, “I liken it to knowing you’ve reached the top when Weird Al Yankovic makes a song about you.”  I have arrived.

That chair was even featured on Miss Mustard Seed’s blog…eeek!
Back to the curvy lady…  ooh, it was such fun taking off that upholstery.  I have to give credit to the last upholsterer because my hands looked like I had been in a fight with an angry wet cat.  That upholstery was not going to shift! Not to mention my back was speaking volumes as well.  (or could it be I’m getting older…nah)

Even my youngest boy had a blast yanking off that welting.
Outdated Upholstered Chair gets Linen & Rose French Makeover by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com
When he was done, he was huffing and puffing and declared, “I’m bigger now.  I think I’m going to be as strong as Dada.  I think I’m even going to be as strong as Dabio”.  Hahahaha…ever watch Wild Kratts on PBS?  Dabio is a make-fun character of Fabio.  You have to see it.  That kid cracks me up!

Once down to bear bones it was time to dress up this fancy lady.

I’ve always had a thing for linen.  It’s such a soft, natural fiber fabric and all I could envision was linen for this piece.  Mixing it up with a pretty rose fabric just gave it a little more feminine appeal, don’t you think?
Outdated Upholstered Chair gets Linen & Rose French Makeover by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com
Aside from the buttoned up back, my favorite part of this chair is the kidney shaped seat.

 See the coordinating welting?
Outdated Upholstered Chair gets Linen & Rose French Makeover by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com
I seriously wanted this chair for my bedroom, but I already have one…sigh.

How about that carved leg design?  I accented it by highlighting with a light beige color.

Now, every lady has to look good from the backside, so I dressed her up proper.
Outdated Upholstered Chair gets Linen & Rose French Makeover by Prodigal Pieces www.prodigalpieces.com Don’t you just love this mix of fabrics?  I am happy to say that this lovely beauty was up for sale in my shop and was purchased within an hour or so.  A happy ending.

Vintage Feed Sack Chair {Themed Makeover Day}

Sometimes my projects are in my head and sound good to me, but I never quite know how they’re going to turn out.  It’s sort of fun that way, especially when it all gels together.  Here’s is one of those types of projects. Meet my feed sack chair."Vintage

Want the full story? Let’s go back to the beginning.
A couple of weeks ago, I had my four girls with me and we were headed to pick up our weekly milk supply from a local farmer and then headed on to a flea market.  We were all excited to find treasures that day.

Down the back country road we headed to get our milk, and then I spotted a “Garage Sale” sign.  Uh oh. I don’t stop at every one of these (though I would if I could), but I knew since this was off the beaten path there could possibly be a steal.  When driving with a 6 mo. old baby, you have only a limited amount of non-fuss time and I really didn’t know if I should stop.  It could mean diaper changes, nursing time…you know the routine.  Plus, my girls didn’t want to miss out on the flea market.  What to do, what to do?!

The Ugly Duckling Dressing Table – My hubby said it was junk

When I found this “desk” (at least that’s what the owner called it, but admitted to it being a vanity since it had the mirror slots) on Craigslist and showed my hubby what he was picking up, he wasn’t too enthralled. Seriously…I have to give my guy 100% credit for going along with me the way he does, AND for trusting my intuition.

When my hubs first picked it up, he didn’t say anything, but later on he told me, “I thought it was junk.”

Who can blame him?  The previous owner said it had been in his family for over 25 years and that he had intended to refinish it, but until then, he used it to build his hobby models on.

Ummm yeah…paint drips and drops all over, gouges, holes drilled all over it, yes, it would appear to be junk…at least to the average person’s eye.

My eye says, “Game ON!”
Grabbed my handy dandy sander and attacked that top like none other.  This is one of those opportunities I mentioned here where I can get my kids involved in the prep work and this was my daughter’s first time sanding. I love it!

Wood putty was a friend to this dressing table and since it needed patched, painting was the only way to go.
So, knowing how I wanted to finish this piece with having sanded most everything to bare bone, I applied an espresso stain to those places so that it could peek out after painting.

I wanted to draw out the color of those pulls and accentuate them with a coordinating fabric on the chair (which I grabbed from my furniture stash, by the way). Looks so good, don’t you think?

Aren’t those brass batwing pulls just fabulous?!  I love the patina, so no polishing for these aged beauties.
Now, you may be wondering where did the mirror come into the picture?  Well, we recently bought an antique dresser to use in our upcoming bathroom remodel and I knew I wasn’t going to use it, and thought it went perfectly with the dressing table.
Aaah…now my loving hubby says, “I can’t believe that’s the same piece!”  Tsk. He should know by now that I carry a magic wand in my pocket.  hee hee.

Vintage Dressing Table Makeover ~ For the Love of Red

I have to admit that I promised my hubby, my family, AND myself that no more furniture was to enter into my possession until I cleaned out my workshop. BUT…. (there’s always a but, right?) pieces just have a way of finding me and beckon me to purchase them.  Is it my fault they’re feeling unloved?  tsk. Enter in this vintage dressing table…

With a mirror of 42″ diameter, solid wood construction (it was heavy!), and a fab flair, this gorgeous piece wanted a new home. (This one is much like my painted ladyzinc vanity, and industrial vanity)

My client lives in the southern part of the U.S. and wanted a showcase vintage dressing table for her room.  She said red and we did RED!

My oldest daughter and I had fun staging this one!

Confession time:  I am typically not your average electronic device user and put off owning a cell phone f.o.r.e.v.e.r.  BUT… (there’s that but again!) I had to invest in one for my business sake and it has really made things easier.  For instance, I went to purchase the fabric she requested and it wasn’t in stock.  Took a picture of another very similar fabric and sent her the picture.  It was either that fabric or wait 2 weeks to get the table.  She responded in minutes and said, “go ahead!”.  Whew.  Normally, I would have driven a half hour home, corresponded in email, and then headed back to the store. Aaah…so much better.
I love the fabric I found because it adds that added punch of contrast to the vintage dressing table, don’t you think?!
