Are you ready for awesome DIY inspiration? Now, I’m not just talking about my project, but I am so excited to bring you this month’s Trash to Treasure Tuesday to you with my four blogger friends. We come together to share our latest thrifty find and inspire you to try your own hand at tackling that beast you’ve been staring at in your own home. Maybe it’s a dresser, maybe it’s a clock passed down, or even a dated print you want to get rid of. Take for instance these…do you know what they are? If you do, you’re my kinda folk. Today, I’m sharing a vintage cassette tape holder makeover.
Did you guess they were those old cassette tapes? I knew instantly what they were. However, when I went to check out, a lady not much younger than I said, “I have no idea what these are for…” Umm…did I just date myself or what?!
What’s great is that someone already tried to amp these up with a cork board added with hinges. Hey, I’m all about functional decor.
They even have the original Napa Valley logo on them.
While I’m showing this on its side, it is meant to be hung horizontally as-is. Though, you could hang it either vertically or horizontally with a little tweaking.
DIY TIME
First, this is the simplest makeover with the largest impact. I take my compressor and blow out all the dust from inside it. Then, I set them up to be sprayed with this reactive stain.
I literally spray it on and let it cure, watching it age before my eyes. You can see the sprayer and other reactive stain in this post HERE or video below.
Not only did the stain deepen the wood, but also the cork board. Win-win!!
Next, as soon as the stain cures, I design a graphic for the cork board using my transfer technique and paint it on by hand.
MIX TAPE
So tell me…did you ever make a mix tape? One that is compiled of all your favorite songs you waited eagerly for on the radio, only to hit the record button and you miss the song by half? aaaagggghhh!!
Technology has come such a long way since my teen days. I can tell you in all honesty that my tapes in this vintage cassette tape holder would have had: Salt N’ Pepa, MC Hammer, Heavy D, Fresh Prince, DJ Easy Rock, Queen Latifah…you get the idea before I became a Christian at 18 years of age. But…I would also have had classical and baroque music, Celtic music, steel drums, country, Motown, and so much more. I love all genres of music with heavy metal probably falling at the bottom.
What about you? Tell me what cassettes you still have and listen to – I’d love to hear!
If you’d like to make these a part of your home story, you can find these and more in my online store.

Love it! My sister and I used to make tapes. I am much older so it was 70’s music. We loved “Billy Don’t be a Hero”, anything by Queen, and some group called Paper Lace. It was fun 🙂 I still have those tapes somewhere along with Lisa’s Panosonic tape recorder/player. They were all the “in” thing back then. Great memories! Fun project!

Yes!! I love that era too being born in the 70s. I had my Panosonic player until recently it died. haha. Love those simpler times…

Very retro! My mix tape would’ve been mostly hair bands, some Journey definitely. But country too, and some golden oldies, some stuff by the rat pack, some songs from musicals……maybe a little heavy metal. My dad was a dj so we listened to everything, except rap. Not a fan then or now. Well I mean I’ll listen to some Toby Mac, and Lacre occasionally. Now there is no mix tape in my life. I listen to mostly Christian music, and I like it that way!!
Larissa says
How fun! Oh yes, I don’t listen to those groups, but Christian music for sure.

This looks soooo good Larissa! And a BIG YES to Salt N’ Pepa, MC Hammer, Heavy D, Fresh Prince, DJ Easy Rock, Queen Latifah!!! XOXO
Larissa says
hahaha!! I don’t listen to them now, but stick to Christian, but I do love to dance to most anything. We have so much in common!

That turned out so well!! I still have my Beatles cassettes and also my husband’s much played Steely Dan!! 😂
Larissa says
You rock! It’s crazy to think how fast time has flown, how technology has changed, and how I miss the simpler times.
