Simple Home Repairs

Is anything truly simple? My vote is NO. However, we can overcomplicate things and make it worse than it really is. Take simple home repairs, for instance.

We see it needs done, we know it probably won’t take much time or money, and yet… there it is.

Whatever it is from a missing piece of trim to a squeaky drawer.

You know who you are. {{wink, wink}}

I find myself there too, at times, so I’m talking to myself as well.

WHERE I’M AT

As you’ve seen, I’m trying to keep up with simple home repairs in my own home. Here’s what I’ve done in recent years (see project gallery HERE):

First, let’s take a look at this… er… brain-stomping, stupid HEADACHE.

Back Door Before Simple Home Repair | livinrealwithlarissa.com #livinrealwithlarissa

Yep, that’s a door.

But, if you look closely, you see that someone didn’t finish their job.

Before I go on, let me catch you up to speed. About 5 years ago, I thought it a good idea to upgrade the rolled rubber roof over the family room with a metal roof.

Not only were there no leaks, but seriously no issues with anything, the skylight, the fireplace chimney… NOTHING.

The guy that was recommended showed up highly angry because he had just been fired, his crew didn’t show up for the same reason, and he did the WORST job ever on the roof I didn’t technically need.

Then, he broke a window and didn’t offer to replace it.

In his haste, he didn’t flash anything, and I found out at the next heavy rain there is now a leak.

This is my lot in life, folks.

NEXT

Fast-forward a few years and that leads me to a few months ago when I had another recommended guy come and replace that roof, flash it correctly. I should be right as rain, right?

NOPE.

I got this same quirky leak that only happens randomly, not even every year or season, but irritating!

Then, after years of filming the water flow and having about FOUR contractors look at it, I find the problem myself.

To all that is holy I was madder than a hornet. The new sheet metal roof made the rain run off at such a fast pace that it would skip my gutter, run down behind the pergola, onto my door casing, and then head left to my window casing.

GAH!!!

The person that did this door didn’t finish it and I had no idea as everyone kept focusing on the window being the issue.

Here’s my vlog talking about it and showing it all. {{head smack}}

In my opinion, that’s what I get for listening and trusting other folks.

REPAIR TIME

Since the newest roof remedied that flush over the gutters, my door hasn’t been leaking.

However, that gap has been high on my list of priorities before winter hits hard.

First, I use a maker and a scrap piece of PVC trim to mark where I want to cut.

Then, using my cutter, I slice through the siding and remove the insulation as well.

After that, I cut the PVC trim with mitered corners and happy that I made cuts simple with my little 5″ circular saw. Also, I had to rip the top trim a bit with my jigsaw.

But before I can attach the trim and finish, I need to cut a piece of flashing to go behind the pergola AND behind the siding to make a drip edge.

I gotta tell ya that getting that stinkin’ thing to get in there too longer than the whole project. {{second head smack}}

Last, I nail on the trim, caulk, and then paint.

FINISHED

Finally, my back patio door is complete and ready for the whatever the weather throws at it.

While I know this isn’t mind-blowing amazing, it is literally joy for me who’s been messing with this headache for far too long.

DONE.

    You are one amazing lady Larissa. I LOVE that you fixed that yourself after having how many “contractors” come in and “fix it”?? We had an A#1 handy man who could fix anything (and happily so) do lots of work for us a few summers ago. He was wonderful. Guess they don’t make them like that anymore. And since my husband scares me when he picks up a hammer we are hard pressed to get those little things done around this 1829 house. Sigh. Keep going and encouraging us with all your COMPLETED projects. Love to read about them!! Blessings galore!!!

      You’re so sweet, Barb. The contractors didn’t actually do any work, but kept giving me a quote and hoping to have the solution. It is VERY hard to find reliable folk and why I do it myself.
      You crack me up about your husband! 😀
      Thank you for the love.

    Where do I begin to count the little things I keep putting off until manana?? You have inspired me and now I’m making a list and aim to start tackling it…. See what you started!?!?!? 🤣❤️🤣 (A list is a good start, right? 😉)

    • Larissa says

      It certainly is and I have a HUGE one! So much to do just to feel like I can take a breath. All in time. 🙂

  3. Marie says

    The list of home repair projects needing attention is growing up my arm and unlike you, I’m either too nervous or too overwhelmed to tackle them. You blow me away Larissa! Always such an inspiration.

    • Larissa says

      Right? I’m not nervous but overwhelmed for sure or just don’t care at times. I know you get it.

  4. Mary says

    Wow! Now that right there is Beautiful! Girl, you and your tools do wonders! Grateful once again for your inspiration. We have mice chewing on the masonite siding at the bottom of garage where it meets the concrete block and I mentioned to someone over here (aka husband) that we could use that tool thingie that you used in this project (sorry, I know hammer, nail, screw drivers, drill, sawzall etc, but don’t know what that one is called) to cut off that bottom piece, nail a new piece of cement board in place and caulk at the joint line instead of taking all the siding off, etc…Now I know that will work because you did it with that tool! Yay! Thank you, thank you!

    • Larissa says

      Sounds like you have similar issues. oy! I mention that tool in my post just being a cutter that you can use with different blades/materials. It’s so handy!! I hope you get one for just you and give a whirl. 😉

Larissa looks at things with fresh eyes, she problem solves creatively, and I love how she uses her "stash" of valuable "junk" in the process.

What attracted me to Prodigal Pieces at first was the business name. What kept me interested is her opening up to share her life with her readers. She shares her beautiful creativity, has tutorials in her blog and takes what was old and makes it new again. I have several of her beautiful pieces decorating my home.
