Trashure is my word for treasure found in the trash (aka. one man’s trash is another woman’s treasure). Today is Trash to Treasure Tuesday! As I showed you last week, this Mid Century Modern credenza is going to get a new life as an entertainment console. Woot! Just wait until you see what my blogger friends have for you too.
BACKSTORY
Here’s the story behind my find. I was being a good girl and not even going out junkin’ during our city clean-up. Why, you ask? Because my garage shop is a wreck from our remodel and I have NO ROOM! Plus, I only like to keep on hand what I can work on in the next few weeks.
Anyhoo, it is our quadrant’s time to set out trash. I promise myself that if I saw something en route from my house to errands that I was allowed to pick it up. Only catch was it had to be AFTER all the pickers had already gone through. Otherwise, all was off-limits. So here’s a sampling of some of what I found in one day…eep!
Do you blame me? I ended up giving the crib away but was satisfied it didn’t go to the dump since nobody wanted it. The frame was a no-brainer and will find new purpose in our home remodel (stay tuned), and the table was a project for Miss E, my next to youngest daughter.

WOWZERS
The next day, I found this…
Remember, this stuff is left a week after pickers had gone through. Crazy! My head spins at all the waste there is because I didn’t go through the other quadrants during their time of clean-up. I would need a pole barn to fit it all!
Funny thing is that on one day I pick up that cast iron table. Then, a few days later the owner sets out the twin to it. I grab it and have a set of two. Isn’t it weird that I had already redid an exact table like them years before.
The beat-up cedar chest has a makeover HERE. However, today is all about how that credenza is turning into an entertainment console. Boy, is it in rough shape, but oh so full of potential!
DIY TIME

My sander and I went to work unveiling that gorgeous walnut veneer. It was such a shame that it isn’t in better shape because it is full of pocks and holes like someone had attacked it. I filled up those holes with wood filler and sanded again.
Since I am turning this credenza into an entertainment console, I need to build in the spot where a drawer was missing. My husband, JC, cut me a few pieces of wood with our table saw. I used my brad nailer to attach them inside the missing drawer space for support.
Next, I added a panel of luan to reinforce the drawer space bottom and raise it to make it flush with the frame and glued it down with Liquid Nails. To enclose the space, I added a couple of pieces of wood to the sides using Kreg Jig Master System and my drill to create pocket screw holes for easy assembly. (I love that thing!!) Last, I drilled a few holes in the back for wires with a hole saw bit.
NEXT STEPS
Once that cabinet was prepped, I took it out back for a good spankin’ with my paint sprayer. In no time I am able to get a coat on and not have to worry about debris getting into my finish.
I started with a base coat of Kilz Primer & Stain Blocker because in addition to the holes on the top, there were also chemical stains in green and red. After that, I used two coats of Glidden White Semi-Gloss, much like this other credenza and Mid Century set I did.
Next was the drawers turn. After sanding and filling with wood filler on most of them, I wanted some of them to have and some to have paint. For the stained drawers, I used my favorite Early American by RustOleum. That stain has been used in several different room in my house and project pieces.
I went with a light gray base for the other drawers. Then I chose to add some Mid-Century style on the drawer fronts like my color fun credenza with tape.
All the drawers have a topcoat of poly.
PULLS
Last, but not least, the pulls were in great shape, but weren’t any thing great like solid brass. I sanded them down and painted them with this Pure Gold by RustOleum.
In addition, I also add new feet to the legs and painted the caps on them the same color for a fun touch.
THE REVEAL
Finally, here’s the new look and function for this once credenza turned entertainment console. It is a true cast-off #trashure find…
What is more, I love the serpentine style drawer fronts on the one side.
And the painted fun on the other side livens up this #trashure party.

I have always wanted to try a sprayer, but regardless of the painting method, I would be using that spray shelter all the time since we have lots of trees out back that love to rain down debris especially this time of year which happens to be one of the best time for us painters to be outside doing what we love!? Love, love the finished effects. Such a nice mix of stain and paint and great way to overcome the drawer issue. I would love a spray tent. Have the Finish Max Sprayer, but my back yard is a tree canopy. Great for shade, but awful for things dropping on my projects. Always have chairs lined up to be sprayed. Thanks for the opportunity!
Your console makeover is AWESOME! I actually gasped at the final result, and I’m a teeny bit jaded by now with furniture makeovers. I might have tried to match the top to those curvy drawers, but that’s just personal preference. If I had that paint tent, I could redo my set of tall wooden barstools that have “toof” marks all on their legs from when my big boy Australian Shepherd was a puppy. 🙂

Great makeover. You make mid-century modern look good! As a newly retired teacher, I have been redoing everything that I can get my hands on and my husband would love it if I would work outside My sore wrists would love to spray rather than hand paint the larger pieces, a tent could solve both of these problems.

My oldest daughter and I are in the process of re-purposing several projects for our home and to sell.The spray tent would make it safer for the environment AND for her daughter and nephew,whom I keep daily. I love this project! I recently saved a 1940s bedroom set that was destined for the landfill. It was in rough shape, but I was determined to save it. Now it lives in our guest room and no one can believe it is the same set. 🙂
As for the first thing I would paint with the tent… the doors on my kitchen cabinets. I have been putting that project off for way too long. *sigh*

That turned out AWESOME!!! I sure wish someone would teach me how to use the paint sprayer… I have the same one and I’m having the hardest time getting the paint thickness orrect so it will spray… is there a trice to it? is there a GREAT video out there for me to watch?

Love the mix of paint on some drawers and stain on the others. I love picking and rehabbing too. I love the tent, I have a large entertainment center which I am morphing I to a storage bench. That would be my first.
