Trashure is my word for treasure found in the trash (aka. one man’s trash is another woman’s treasure). Today is Trash to Treasure Tuesday! As I showed you last week, this Mid Century Modern credenza is going to get a new life as an entertainment console. Woot! Just wait until you see what my blogger friends have for you too.
BACKSTORY
Here’s the story behind my find. I was being a good girl and not even going out junkin’ during our city clean-up. Why, you ask? Because my garage shop is a wreck from our remodel and I have NO ROOM! Plus, I only like to keep on hand what I can work on in the next few weeks.
Anyhoo, it is our quadrant’s time to set out trash. I promise myself that if I saw something en route from my house to errands that I was allowed to pick it up. Only catch was it had to be AFTER all the pickers had already gone through. Otherwise, all was off-limits. So here’s a sampling of some of what I found in one day…eep!
Do you blame me? I ended up giving the crib away but was satisfied it didn’t go to the dump since nobody wanted it. The frame was a no-brainer and will find new purpose in our home remodel (stay tuned), and the table was a project for Miss E, my next to youngest daughter.
Now, doesn’t it look better? You can find it available in my shop.
WOWZERS
The next day, I found this…
Remember, this stuff is left a week after pickers had gone through. Crazy! My head spins at all the waste there is because I didn’t go through the other quadrants during their time of clean-up. I would need a pole barn to fit it all!
Funny thing is that on one day I pick up that cast iron table. Then, a few days later the owner sets out the twin to it. I grab it and have a set of two. Isn’t it weird that I had already redid an exact table like them years before.
The beat-up cedar chest has a makeover HERE. However, today is all about how that credenza is turning into an entertainment console. Boy, is it in rough shape, but oh so full of potential!
DIY TIME
*post is sponsored by HomeRight (see full disclosure)
My sander and I went to work unveiling that gorgeous walnut veneer. It was such a shame that it isn’t in better shape because it is full of pocks and holes like someone had attacked it. I filled up those holes with wood filler and sanded again.
Since I am turning this credenza into an entertainment console, I need to build in the spot where a drawer was missing. My husband, JC, cut me a few pieces of wood with our table saw. I used my brad nailer to attach them inside the missing drawer space for support.
Next, I added a panel of luan to reinforce the drawer space bottom and raise it to make it flush with the frame and glued it down with Liquid Nails. To enclose the space, I added a couple of pieces of wood to the sides using Kreg Jig Master System and my drill to create pocket screw holes for easy assembly. (I love that thing!!) Last, I drilled a few holes in the back for wires with a hole saw bit.
NEXT STEPS
Once that cabinet was prepped, I took it out back for a good spankin’ with my paint sprayer. In no time I am able to get a coat on and not have to worry about debris getting into my finish.
I started with a base coat of Kilz Primer & Stain Blocker because in addition to the holes on the top, there were also chemical stains in green and red. After that, I used two coats of Glidden White Semi-Gloss, much like this other credenza and Mid Century set I did.
Next was the drawers turn. After sanding and filling with wood filler on most of them, I wanted some of them to have and some to have paint. For the stained drawers, I used my favorite Early American by RustOleum. That stain has been used in several different room in my house and project pieces.
I went with a light gray base for the other drawers. Then I chose to add some Mid-Century style on the drawer fronts like my color fun credenza with tape.
All the drawers have a topcoat of poly.
PULLS
Last, but not least, the pulls were in great shape, but weren’t any thing great like solid brass. I sanded them down and painted them with this Pure Gold by RustOleum.
In addition, I also add new feet to the legs and painted the caps on them the same color for a fun touch.
THE REVEAL
Finally, here’s the new look and function for this once credenza turned entertainment console. It is a true cast-off #trashure find…
What is more, I love the serpentine style drawer fronts on the one side.
And the painted fun on the other side livens up this #trashure party.
So, maybe next time you’re driving around, and you see a sad looking piece of furniture, you may snatch it up, eh? After that., tell me if this entertainment console stolen your heart? You can find it also available in my online store.

How could you not take all those wonderful things? The dresser turned entertainment center turned out great.
Larissa says
There was so much I left because I just can’t take any more for my sanity’s sake. Thank you!
Kitty Martin says
Time to do a workshop for those who want to sit but don’t have the knowledge. You bring the furniture and they bring the materials. Could be a high-school or jr college elective
Larissa says
Ha! Love the college credit idea! 😀
Lois S says
I love you boldness to take on a piece of questionable value and make it a treasure! I really need the spray tent so I can spray the wicker table I picked up on the side of the road! Hope I win!!
Larissa says
It’s an addiction, Lois. 😀 Thank you for seeing the beauty in what I do. Wicker can be a bear and this would be sweet!
Louise says
Beautiful! One of my favorite things I’ve seen you makeover. I would use a spray tent to paint/refinish a mid century buffet.
Larissa says
I had so much fun seeing it revived. Thank you, Louise!
Sharon Holbert says
Your projects are amazing! You have a very creative eye for sure in your trashure projects! I especially love the stained drawers on this project. Great job!
Larissa says
I would have loved to save it all, but I am also a fan of making updates too. Thanks so much, Sharon!
Carole H says
Wow!!!! What a transformation! I can’t believe there is that much good stuff thrown out. I would have taken everything too, so hard to resist. Wonderful job!
Larissa says
This was only a smidgen of what I could have brought home. It seriously is heart-breaking, but I try! Thanks, Carole.
Cathy@RevolutionaryRedesigns says
Your dresser-turned-console is phenomenal!!! I admire all the work you put into it and the classy design which emerged -just beautiful!!Your finishes are amazing! I have always wanted to try a sprayer, but regardless of the painting method, I would be using that spray shelter all the time since we have lots of trees out back that love to rain down debris especially this time of year which happens to be one of the best time for us painters to be outside doing what we love!? Thank you for sharing!!
Larissa says
Woot! Thank you, Cathy! It was a ton of work, but worth it to see it come back to life. I hear ya on the trees and debris. This will make life easier!
KC F says
Wow, what a transformation! Your “vision” to transform cast offs is amazing. The first project I would use the spray tent for would be updating my outdoor bistro table and chairs, and then another outdoor table, and then 2 large planter boxes, and then. . . .
Larissa says
hahaha…you sound like me! 😀 Thanks for the compliments. I had fun!
Cecilia says
Oh my goodness, my car would be full of treasures if my neighborhood did that. It’s amazing what people throw away! The dresser turned out great. I love the details you added. As for the paint shelter, the first thing I’d paint is my patio table followed by my soon to be barbecue cart. I’d love to have one. Thanks for the chance to win!
Larissa says
Yes, that’s the trouble for me! I can’t leave stuff go that I know can be fixed, but I just don’t have room for it all. Thanks for lovin’ on my makeover.
Brenda says
I would love one of those tents there are so many projects I could do with one that I have to pass on I have a max sprayer thanks to you and your highchair post, I like the tv console although to be honest I am not in love with it only because I do not like mid century modern I am a farmhouse décor girl. I shared your post
Larissa says
Sounds good!
Barbara says
Wow. My husband would love the spray tent for about 15 pieces we have in our garage. I love your imagination and creativity in seeing what an old tired piece can become.
Larissa says
We are kindred spirits, Barbara. hee hee. The tent would be perfect! Thanks for the love.
Maureen Clipperton says
I’d love one of those spray tents. I hate over spray and have to drap everything I paint. I have an old screen I need to work on that would be my first project. You did an awesome job on the console. You brought out the hidden beauty in the piece. Nice job! Very creative .
Larissa says
That’s the great thing about the sprayer too…minimal overspray. Yay! Sounds like you would put it to good use. 🙂
Mary-the boondocks blog says
Larissa this one is calling my name. Love the juxtaposition of the natural wood with the geometric shape.
Larissa says
It was screaming at me to do it. 😀 I had fun, Mary, thanks!
Kimberly says
Beautiful makeovers, including your daughter’s table. These freebies are nicer than what I pay hard cash for at yard sales and thrift stores in my area. I would love to use a spray tent to spray a bunch of chairs I am re-making.
Debbie says
You have an amazing vision for a piece of furniture. When you described staining and painting drawers, I just couldn’t visualize it but it turned out great! I can see I need to step outside of the box with more projects. Beautiful job!
Debbie
Larissa says
It’s so funny because I will ask my husband what he thinks of my ideas and, bless his heart, he can never see what I see. Ah well…we make a good team. Thank you, Debbie!
Carol S says
Love, love the finished effects. Such a nice mix of stain and paint and great way to overcome the drawer issue. I would love a spray tent. Have the Finish Max Sprayer, but my back yard is a tree canopy. Great for shade, but awful for things dropping on my projects. Always have chairs lined up to be sprayed. Thanks for the opportunity!
Diane Stuckart says
Your console makeover is AWESOME! I actually gasped at the final result, and I’m a teeny bit jaded by now with furniture makeovers. I might have tried to match the top to those curvy drawers, but that’s just personal preference. If I had that paint tent, I could redo my set of tall wooden barstools that have “toof” marks all on their legs from when my big boy Australian Shepherd was a puppy. 🙂
Larissa says
Thanks, Diane. The tent would definitely be a blessing with the stools. I will be doing my own set soon!
Julie says
Great makeover. You make mid-century modern look good! As a newly retired teacher, I have been redoing everything that I can get my hands on and my husband would love it if I would work outside My sore wrists would love to spray rather than hand paint the larger pieces, a tent could solve both of these problems.
Larissa says
Congratulations on retirement and for doing what you love. I hear ya on the sore wrists. The sprayer is a lifesaver!
Christy says
Larissa!!!! This is absolutely stunning!!! Only you could create something si beautiful from that find!!
Larissa says
You know I couldn’t leave it there, right? 😉 I had fun and am happy with the results. Thanks, Christy!
Janie BV says
I would love to have one of those paint tents. The first thing I would paint would be a secondhand dresser I picked up aboout a year ago.
Larissa says
That sounds perfect for the shelter. 😀
Sharon B Graham says
My oldest daughter and I are in the process of re-purposing several projects for our home and to sell. The spray tent would make it safer for the environment AND for her daughter and nephew, whom I keep daily. They are usually playing outside near our work area, while we “reimagine”… We love your latest creation,of course! Can’t wait to see your next project…you are a true inspiration!!!
Larissa says
Go team! Sounds like you have a fun family time and you certainly could make use of the shelter. Thank you!
Frances Batson says
I need to paint a bookshelf I have had for 40 years and give it some pizazz. I really enjoy your redos of good furniture that need someone to bring it to life. It is great that you are teaching your children to do the same.
Larissa says
That would be so much easier with a sprayer, Frances. Thank you for your words of encouragement – sometimes it can seem daunting! 🙂
Cindy A. says
I love this project! I recently saved a 1940s bedroom set that was destined for the landfill. It was in rough shape, but I was determined to save it. Now it lives in our guest room and no one can believe it is the same set. 🙂
As for the first thing I would paint with the tent… the doors on my kitchen cabinets. I have been putting that project off for way too long. *sigh*
Larissa says
Ooh…sounds like you not only scored in the set, but the value of it refinished. Yay! I hear ya on the kitchen cabinets…no fun with out a sprayer.

Thank you for the sweet words, Janie. 🙂

That turned out AWESOME!!! I sure wish someone would teach me how to use the paint sprayer… I have the same one and I’m having the hardest time getting the paint thickness orrect so it will spray… is there a trice to it? is there a GREAT video out there for me to watch?
Larissa says
Thanks! Have you looked at the HomeRight website? They have some videos there. 🙂
Mary T says
You really are an artist!! I love this, although, I might have stained all the drawers. Love the stain color!!! You do such great work all the time and I am amazed! Hope I win this time, but I know better because I never win!
Larissa says
Thank you, Mary! I would have stained all the drawers too, but the damage on the others would have made it look worse.
Mel says
Love the mix of paint on some drawers and stain on the others. I love picking and rehabbing too. I love the tent, I have a large entertainment center which I am morphing I to a storage bench. That would be my first.
Larissa says
Ooh…that sounds like a sweet project!

Wow, what a gorgeous makeover, Larissa! The wood grain on the drawer fronts is stunning. Love the diamond detail also. Lucky is the owner who purchases this!
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
This is such a cool, unique piece Larissa! And you can’t beat FREE!
Carolyn Kiser says
I love this piece! I would never have thought of painting drawers on one side and staining the drawers on the other side but it is beautiful. You have wonderful vision. I like to paint outside so the shelter and sprayer would be of fantastic benefit.
Larissa says
Thank you so much, Carolyn. 🙂
Lora says
Beautiful piece! I would never have thought to paint it and stain it. I love your work.

Thank you so much, Lora. It is fun to do different style to spice it up. 😀

I have been looking for the perfect entertainment centre – and now I can see it! Thank you Larissa for showing me the way. Now all I have to do is find an unwanted credenza!
Larissa says
My absolute pleasure, Helen! 🙂

Love it! Gray and wood combo makes me happy, haha!! I’m not sure what I would paint first, but the porch swing is calling my name for some color…or maybe it’s calling my hubby’s name! Then, there’s a bookcase and the chair and the…….

Wow! I am amazed at your vision for that beat-up dresser–so beautiful!
