Boy, are you in for a treat. tee hee. If you follow me on social media, you would have seen that I unashamedly found this #trashure loot after I left sunrise service from our church for Easter. I wasn’t shopping Curb le Chic, but I couldn’t let all this stuff go to the landfill during our city cleanup. Wouldn’t you have done the same thing? Today, I’m beginning my makeover fun with that gorgeous antique pie crust table.

Before I get started, let me show you my haul. I will admit that when I was driving into church, I had only spied one thing that caught my eye. However, when we drove back by I couldn’t believe my eyes. Can you blame me?

WOW

First, we have this fantastic set of chairs. Why is it when I need a chair I can’t find one, but when I’m not looking I get two? tsk.

Then, this was the piece that caught my eye first and made me stop…an early 1900’s oak chest of drawers! eep!

On top, there’s a pedestal table from a previous haul, and an antique crate filled with Americana decor. Next, to the right, you see a drop-leaf coffee table, a hunting scene shelf, and the aforementioned antique pie crust table.

You can imagine JC’s surprise when he pulled up in our driveway after church…haha. The kids were like wow and he said, “Cool.” (per usual). I asked him which one would he not have bothered with and he replied, “The painted one.” Silly man. I said, “Honey, that’s the best one.” JC looked closer and said, “Oh, it’s oak.”

BINGO!!

When many of you spied the antique pie crust table after I posted the picture on social media you were like…WOW! Me too, but it has its own story.

Do you see that missing chunk off that gorgeous edge? My heart hurt. I so desperately wish it had been whole, but then again it wouldn’t have been set out for trash. Right?

DIY TIME

What’s a girl to do, but break out her tools and fix this hot mess. I mulled over making a replica using a cast, but there was no way it would stay on for long. So, I chose to use my jigsaw and do the best I could to save what was left. I can just imagine my neighbors eyes popping out as they think I’m brutally attacking this gorgeous gem. haha.

Here it is after the amputation. I must say I think it came out pretty good considering what I was up against.

Next, it’s time to see about removing that peeling top layer and see what I’m up against. I whip out my sander and have at it with a 150 grit paper. BTW, this beautiful table is mahogany. I still can’t believe I had to cut it. sniff. However, I’m elated I am able to do something with it.

Once my restoration prep was done, I begin my giving it a good cleaning. Nothing like an old toothbrush to get into those tiny crevices.

FIX ‘ER UP

The top got a coat of Early American. Once the stain cures, I added multiple coats of a satin poly with my brush.

I work the poly first, because it will make it a much easier process to paint the edge. Using my square brush (which is perfect for creating crisp lines), I give the ornate edge two coats of paint letting cure in between.

Next, using my same brush, I apply a glazing to really draw out those amazing details.

THE REVEAL

Finally, I do the same effect to parts of the legs using my with paint and glazing. Here she is all finished and ready for a many more years.

I am beyond pleased with the outcome and am so glad I decided to give it a try. You know I couldn’t have left it there – the horror! hee hee.

FUN TIMES

I dare you to scroll back up to see the before. Isn’t it amazing that it could have missed my eye and gone to the trash? Even this ornate oval frame with original art was in the trash. I tell ya, shopping Curb le Chic is not only a grand adventure, but saves our landfill from needless waste, and helps us to appreciate and savor.
