Time flies when you’re a DIYer! Especially when you are homeschooling, remodeling your home, gardening, cooking, etc. while creating content for you. In my world, I’m the main hair cutter for my family. Why? I say, why not? It’s not about saving money, but more about getting what I want and being self-sufficient. To get a better idea of what, you can read my first haircut post HERE (even though I’ve been cutting hair for over 20 years). Today, I’m sharing my updated DIY wavy haircut to inspire you.
Yes, I am shaggy beyond all get-out. I took this pic and video (see below) around 8am straight outta bed. I didn’t use my buff to protect my hair overnight because today is washday, and I haven’t refreshed in a couple of days.
In addition, it’s pouring buckets outside and is so dark! So, I apologize for the dark pictures, but we’re headed for sunshine inside and out today.
CATCH UP
First, before I break out my scissors and make the big CHOP, let’s revisit my starting point. If you remember, I have spent 45 years of my life frustrated with my hair because I had no idea I was a wavy girl. Take a look at this picture from a few months ago and read the full beginning HERE.
After I figured out my texture and how to do what’s best for my hair, I did a crazy thing and cut off about 9″ of my length. Why? Well, I wanted my transition of my hair to happen faster, but also managing the length while on this learning curve (pun intended) is quite a chore. Here’s my hair after that first cut.
CUTTING TIME
As you can see, my hair has grown immensely and needs to be loved on. With that in mind, let me wash up, grab my scissors, and show you how I get it done DIY style. While I have much of my information in the video demo, I want to quickly touch on what pros and cons there are with my new style.
Cons
- I am somewhat limited to doing up-do hairstyles, but I can still do some with it
Pros
- my hair has tightened up the curl pattern
- the layers give me more body
- the wash days are easier (less product and time styling)
- dry time is half the time of longer lengths
- I literally do nothing except refresh once after wash day. Plus, I can go out in the wind, and wake up and do nothing and it still looks good
- everyone tells me I look ten years younger. haha. For the record, before my texture realization, several times I’ve been thought to be a twin of my oldest daughter (boo-yah)
There ya go…I have more reasons to keep this length (for now anyway). Additionally, I’m enjoying the bounce while I run and feel it suits my personality more as well.
LIVE AND LEARN
While I cut my own hair, and you can too, I am not a professional and don’t want to be. However, I am all about enabling myself to be all that I can be. I remember one time my headlight was out on my car during college, so I bought the light and replaced it in the parking lot while at the laundromat doing my laundry. Some lady came up and asked me what in the world I was doing. I explained, and her reply was, “Good for you”. Yet another time in high school, I wanted to install a new speakers in my first car, so I pulled the old and wired in the new. My mom came home to my legs hanging out of the trunk, and she asked, “do you know what you’re doing?” No, but I learned.
MUCH BETTER
This time around I took off about an inch in my layers and made it a bit more stacked as well. That not only allows me to head into summer with a bit more bounce, but also gives me an idea of how to cut this texture. I’m still learning and enjoy sharing with you.
I’ve explained as much as possible in my video but am also always open to your questions. I’d love to hear from you! Have you ever cut your own hair?
Then, pin and share to inspire others to learn more about their own hair and how to embrace the wave. Let’s make curlfriends!

So cute!!! You DO look so young with this new do!! It really suits you and your personality. “Bouncy” is a great description. I so envy your waves….. my hair is stick straight and will NOT hold a curl or a wave no matter what I try!! You have found your signature style and it is AWESOME!!! 😍
Larissa says
Thanks! Hearing the love means much. Finally, I have sunshine in my neck of the woods and feeling more bouncy these days. You’re a sweetheart, Rebecca.

I love seeing that inner beauty you have shining through to the outside. The cut is adorable! Spring represents new beginnings and it looks as though yours is starting off on the right foot (or head, in this case!) ;D
Larissa says
haha. Truth! It sure feels good to have a new cut. I was shaggy for sure! Thanks for the love, Laura.

So beautiful. That cut just brings out your natural beauty. I absolutely love it. Thanks for sharing.
Larissa says
Thank you for the sweet words. I’m happy to still be able to tackle these waves. It’s a new learning experience for sure!

I just love your hair. Kudos to you being able to cut it yourself. I wear my hair short and during the pandemic I looked like I had a mullet. LOL My daughter would cut the back and I would cut my bangs. Thank goodness I can go to my stylist now. I tried once to cut my son’s hair and it did not work out and he said no more Mom. I can do a lot of things haircutting is not one of them. I agree you do look years younger. I love reading your blog and seeing all the makeovers you do. Keep up the good work.
Larissa says
Thank you. It certainly is different for me, but glad I am able, for now at least. That’s why I train my kids! haha. Your story cracks me up! I’ve definitely have had my bad experiences too. They make me appreciate the good ones!

It is honestly the perfect cut for you, so so flattering! You have gorgeous curls, and if the style is easier for you to handle and you can cut it yourself, that’s just perfection. I have been known to cut my own hair, and my children’s when they were young., and did a pretty good job.😊
Larissa says
Good on ya! 😀 Yes, this is harder to a degree being shorter because there’s less forgiveness, but I’m kinda the type to try anything once. 😀 I’m just thankful it’s easier than I thought with the waves. Thanks so much, Sheryl.

Your words mean much to me, Darlene. Thank you. I’ve been trying to work on other parts of me and my life and this sure feels good.

I loved the first cut, but this second is even better! I think you hit the nail on the head, this fits your personality! This journey seems to be amazing for you. 😊
Larissa says
aww…yay!! I did too. For the sake of summer coming, I wanted to try a bit different before winter comes. I figure I have 6 more weeks to decide after that. I’m loving it so far! I’m super curious how summer will prove to me as I haven’t had bangs in decades. eep!

You’re so fun, Marti! Thank you. I’m excited to see what happens with it over summer.

You are so brave and talented to cut and style your own hair…kudos from another curly-haired, tool loving woman! 🙂 I have to say your short, wavy style suits your personality, too…thanks for sharing your journey and updates.
Larissa says
High five! I am such a newbie at this and am loving teaching my girls that also have waves going on so they can avoid all my trials. Thanks so much!
Sarah says
I love. Your new haircut. You are so talented! Cute, cute!
Larissa says
You are such a fun gal, Sarha. Thank you for the kind words. I’m happy with it and looking forward to what summer brings.
Linda says
LOVE the shorter cut! I applaud your “can do” approach! When people ask do you know how to do that? I think a shoulder shrug and a “not yet” is a perfect response. Everything we do improves with practice. My best friend who works with college students says to them all the time, you probably didn’t walk successfully the first time either! All the best!
Larissa says
I love that!! Yes, we never stop learning until we die if we’re smart. There’s so much to learn and love about this world. Hugs!
Kim Banko says
Oh my gosh! Larissa! I love it so much!!
Larissa says

Larissa says
You’re so sweet, Dawn. I could hug ya!! Thanks so much for the love on my locks. 😀
Sharon says
Oh My Goodness! I love the new do! You have beautiful hair and the bouncy new cut is just YOU. As a busy young lady and I’m sure it is easier to care for. You did a great job cutting it yourself. Keep on making new from old and have a blessed day, Sharon
Larissa says
You get bonus points for saying, “young lady” tee hee. Yes, it sure is easier and really feels like I’ve found ME. Thanks so much!
Pam Mancha says
Larissa,
You and your haircut are absolutely adorable! I don’t know how you could get any cuter! Hugs and prayers coming your way!
