Are you ready? It’s already the last Tuesday of the month which means it’s Reduce, Reuse, REFASHION time! While I totally had another project planned for today that just didn’t come together (…yet), I’m still excited to show you these stained pants. haha. Yeah, I’m funny like that, but that also gives me an opportunity to refashion. I’m feeling a corduroy hipbag project coming on!
For the record, these would be highwaters on my long legs, but they are perfect for what I need them for. I’ve got my scissors handy and am ready to cut!
CUTTIN’ UP
If you know me, I’m a bag lady. Not the street kind, but one that loves to create bags, purses, totes, etc. See what I mean here:
- insulated lunch bag
- tea towel bag
- linen shirt slingbag
- feed sack tote
- denim pocket purse
- DIY Boho bag
- DIY denim bag
- insulated swimsuit beach bag
- feed sack purse
First, to get started, I draft a pattern based on this strap I found at the thrift store a few months ago that made me look for coordinating corduroy.
While I might hesitate to cut something, these pants are GAME ON. First, I cut up the inseam to open the leg up.
Next, I use my pattern and cut out the pieces. At this point, I’m completely leaning on my experience with making hundreds of bags. Also, it’s fun to see it all come together.
While I’m in the salvaging mood, I pull off this zipper from a refashioned wool sweater I felted and used for a journal cover for my daughter.
ASSEMBLY
Then, after I have my pieces cut, fused with webbing and ready to assemble, I clip it together and begin to sew.
Even though I know I’ve had practice at this, I’m literally floored my pattern pieces all line up and I have to make zero adjustments to any of it. I needed a confidence boost!
Last, I just need to cover the exposed seams to make it have a clean look on that ticking stripe interior.
ZIP IT UP
Finally, my DIY corduroy hipbag is ready to go! {{happy dance}}
It’s small enough to tuck up against my chest or hang low at the hip. In addition, I can fit my phone, wallet, sunglasses, and other essentials with ease.
As much as I debate on keeping this, I am offering it and more in my online store.
SHARE
Are you feeling inspired? I sure hope so! This bag was super-easy to whip up. While I don’t have a pattern to share (as I don’t have time to do all that at the moment), there are many free and affordable patterns on other awesome bloggers. Pin and share to inspire others too!

Thanks! I had fun, needed an outlet, and needed to work, so it all was win-win for me. You’re such a blessing to me, Rebecca.

Sew cute!! It is inspiring. I really am not happy with my current purse and I’m picky. I’m imagining a corduroy bag in olive green with some sort of funky liner. Why did corduroy go out of style??? I mean apart from the weird noise it made will walking it was soft and comfortable, at least from what I can remember.

Awesome to hear! I am picky too and prefer to design and make my own. It’s back in baby, and full of vrrrfff, vrfff, vrfff when you walk! haha! Thank you, Niki.
