It’s a good day for a rescue! When I first saw this, I thought “poor thing!” Apparently, during a move for a sale for the ministry thrift store, this ol’ beauty was dropped. ouch. Thankfully, me and my #trashure ways got ahold of it before this ended up in the dump. What is it? A sweet little vintage sewing table that’s being reprieved.
So, why would I want a broken table? If you know the story behind the name of my blog, Prodigal Pieces, you’ll know “what was lost is now found” based on the Biblical story of the prodigal son. I’m here to give this table new life and look.
ASSEMBLY
First, I notice that the table is in pieces, but is not hopeless. I assess the damaged and find that mostly all that is needed is some glue and wood clamps. I apply wood glue to all the joints and clamp together while I use my brad nailer to reinforce those joints.
After a quick assessment, there is damage to some places, but nothing I can’t fix with some elbow grease.
Next, I need to address this large chip out of the wood on the top corner.
To remedy that, I take the table out to my workshop and use my sander and hand-sanding to remove that top routed edge while trying to keep the bottom edge.
Then, after that, I bring it in to fill the damaged spots with wood filler and sand down those spots when cured.
DRESS IT UP
Last, but not least, it’s time to dress this vintage sewing table up and give it a fresh start. Because this has the original faceted glass pulls, I want to showcase those as well as dress up the interior.
After two coats of white, letting cure in between coats, I use this pretty tissue paper on the inside using a DIY decoupage paste with school glue.
You can see how I’ve used tissue paper in the past on:
- a curio cabinet
- a wooden shelf
- a DIY coat rack
- a shabby chic swan
- a folding screen
- a chest of drawers
- a salvaged chest of drawers
ALL PRETTY NOW
Finally, my vintage sewing table rescue and revival is complete!
The outside is refreshed with a vintage vibe, while the inside is “it’s time to play”. Yay!
Sew cute, right?!? Not only is there plenty of room for storing notions and supplies, but it makes you smile when you pop open the lid. I’m a needlework gal, myself, so I can see this being used in any room of the home where I want to tuck away and get some stitch therapy. How about you?
