Do you ever have that feeling of being watched? I literally feel like every time I walk into a thrift store all the geese and heart-cutouts from the 80’s are staring at me. It’s as if they are beckoning me to put them out of their misery. hee hee hee.  Hilarious! Not only will this get new life, but also, it’s Trash to Treasure Tuesday where my blogger friends are joining me too.

I mean, I look like a goose, right? kidding…kidding. If you look close, you can see the original artist’s name and the name of the art: “Wessies Love Song, Spring by Estelle Schenk. Maybe this was painted with a beloved goose in mind?

And how about the hamper lid? And so, we totally have an 80’s vibe going on.

THE BACKSTORY

I know many of you begrudge the chore of laundry day. To be honest, I see it differently. Not only do I count it a blessing to have machines that allow me to toss my dirty in a washing machine and dryer with a push of a button, but also, I have my loves to take care of. One day they won’t be here, and I cherish these days. It sure beats the laundromat during college days!

With that in mind, you may be wondering what in the world I’m going to do with this. Well, let me give you a little backstory. When I first saw this hamper, I laughed out loud. The goose caught me funny, and I told her that I would have to think on taking it home. That day, however, I went home without it because I wasn’t sure if I had supplies in my stash to work with it.

HIDE & SEEK

Meanwhile, the next time I stop by, I see it again and can’t decide what to do. I couldn’t resist the challenge. ahem.

First, let’s take a look at what I have to work with. Peg board attached to corner round in the corners with a simple frame.

This takes me to the “scrap” I mentioned. I had a length of beadboard leftover from my bookcase makeover recently. It turns out I have just enough to do what I need to do. I break out my saw and cut it to fit.

This will not only add style, but that lightweight peg board needs durability for storage of the loads of dirty clothes and dirty laundry.

Next, I take my nailer and attach the panels right into those corners while also using wood glue.

After that, I add trim to the corners, as well as the top so that the lid actually fits. In addition, I sand down the lid and paint it a soft, neutral color. Then, while that is curing, I stain the laundry hamper cabinet an antique white stain. Not all stains are dark and dreary.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Last, here’s the result of my goose vision, an updated, more sturdy, more stylish hamper with a bit of my favorite addition…typography. No need to tuck this cutie in a closet.

These are not only handy in bedrooms, but also in bathrooms to contain that load of laundry as well.

The funny thing is…the goose is still in there hiding! tee hee hee!
