There is rarely a time that I don’t go with my gut when I spy something in the thrift store that piques my interest. However, there are occasions where I ponder, debate, and end up walking away only to go back and get whatever it is I left behind. Such is the case with this time, except it’s not just one medicine cabinet, it’s two. ahem.
I guess you may be wondering two things: (1) why did I leave them (2) why did I go back and get them? Well, since we ship most of our shop items, I have promised JC that I would stop buying small pieces with glass or mirrors in them because he about has a heart attack when he has to package them. haha. We have no problem with large items on pallets, just nerve wracking with the smaller ones that need boxed.
Needless to say, I went back and got them to torture him. JUST KIDDING!! I actually had a revelation as I was pulling away from the store (of course, not while in store). So, they next morning I went back to see if they were still there. Not only were they still there, but I found a few more goodies to use my 35% off coupon on. SCORE!
They’re not in bad shape, but do have wear, missing parts, and some staining going on. They also aren’t identical, but very similar. Here’s medicine cabinet #1 on the inside.
And here’s a peek at the interior of medicine cabinet #2…
First order of business was to remove the doors, and then remove the mirrors. No worries as the mirrors will find a forever home too – not the landfill. Once the doors were off, it was time to give this twin set a good cleaning. In order to prep them, I gave them a through cleaning.
Look at my bucket of water after I wiped them both down. Blucky! It always amazes me how dirty something can be even though to our eye it’s not that bad.
Before I started to refinish them, I did some hole filling with wood filler and made minor repairs here and there. It amazed me that the previous owners had these hung on the wall using screws through the micro thin backing and not proper hardware. These things are not light! I will remedy that soon to make them safe.
Since their original finish isn’t the greatest, there were stains and mixed woods to boot, paint is my best friend. No primer needed, just putting it on with my paint brush.
After the first coat cures for about 2 hours, I apply a second coat. During the time the first coat is curing on the first cabinet, I spray paint the hardware and begin the first coat on the other cabinet. I decided to redo them in two different ways just for fun’s sake. I’m anxious to see which one you like best.
Once I completed the two coats on each medicine cabinet, I chose to showcase their interior with a pop with the soft blue. Again, using my Stubby Brush, I give each interior two coats, letting cure between.
While those coats are curing, it’s time to tackle the doors. Since, I removed the mirrors (you’re welcome JC), I decided to open them up and add chicken wire for fun and texture, plus change the entire use of them. Now they are not bound to a bathroom, but can be used as a wall hutch anywhere in your home. Yay!
However, does anyone else have a love/hate relationship with chicken wire? I mean it looks so cool, but hurts so much! Yes, I wear gloves and take all precautions, but when you are using the tightly rolled end of the roll, it’s doggone hard not to let it bite ya. Just sayin’.
And for those who are wanting to add chicken wire to doors, windows, etc., it’s quite simple. Cut to size with wire cutters leaving a bit of excess, fold over exposed ends, and staple in with a stapler/staples like this one here. Easy…just owie. You are now warned. tee hee.
Okay, so doors are done, and I added a bit of interest to each cabinet using paper on the insides. Are you ready to see this motley pair made new? I am!
Here is medicine cabinet #1.
The rich black really took this to a new level, don’t you think? The medicine cabinet looks like a completely different piece and has new function. And I’m loving the little bling the glass cabinet pulls gave to it as well.
Then the part going on inside makes it a fun peek to see through that chicken wire.
With a little distressing for a time-worn wear effect, it adds to the story of this piece made new.
Now for fun, I staged medicine cabinet #2 in the exact same way, but see what a difference there is in style when I change the main color as well as the paper backing.
The white paint is so refreshing and really changes up the feel of this cabinet. To mix it up with this one, I used the same rustic wood wallpaper I applied to my hutch desk makeover. It’s such a beautiful paper and the bonus is that it’s removable, repositionable, and super easy to use. That way if you want to swap it out at a later point, just peel it off to have aqua or put new paper up. Yay!
For this cabinet, I used the same knobs to give a bit of bling and did the same distressing to add the time-worn effect.
So…I have to ask…which one is your favorite? The black cabinet #1 or the white cabinet #2? In case you were wondering, I remedied the hanging hardware problem by installing keyhole hardware for a flush mount that’s safe.
Here’s a fun look at the cabinets side-by-side:
Both cabinets are available in my shop, (BOTH SOLD) so you can have your pick. woot!

I love both but the paper in inside the darker cabinet makes it my favorite. I love the look of the chicken wire along with the fancy paper, it works so well with the darker finish.
Fun! I like those flowers too. Black is classic. 🙂
Oh, nice!!! I like the flexibility these have now. I’m not sure which one I like better- the white would fit my house a little better, but the black…-what boldness! And I love its paper backing! Maybe one of these color combos is just what the old sewing table I picked up for $3 needs… Sounds perfect!
I feel the same, Becky. tee hee! Sounds like you have a fun project on your hands.
Lorri Rauscher says
I always am interested to see what you do to your finds. As always you never dissapoint!!!!!! Love your ideas. Would love to win the Dixie Belle Package!!!
I’m so stoked to hear it, Lorri. Thank you!

They are mine too. Glad you like them! 😀

Love them both Larissa, but would go with #1 simply because I love the backing paper as well, but both are fabulous re-do’s…

They are both gorgeous! It is hard to choose but my eyes go to the white! I have used Savannah Mist on a mid-century chest of drawers and loved it!
I think I’m more for the white too, for my home, but I love the black as well. haha. That color is gorgeous too!
Great job, Larissa!
Thank you, Natalia!
Rebecca - Knoxville,TN says
Like them both but would pick the white one because I love the faux wood backboard. Fun to see how different they turned out.
My heart leans that way too, but love them both for different reasons. Thanks for stopping by!
Judy Housel says
I think they both are beautiful! I’m drawn to the Black #1 I love the duckegg blue with the flower paper, and chick wire is perfect! I have a shelf in my Laundry room that would be pretty in duck blue! New to Dixie Belle and loving all the inspiration! Thank you!
Thank you, Judy. You will be smitten with Dixie Belle on first brushing…I’m not kidding! 😀
Laura Overholt says
I have thrown away so many cabinets like this from houses we’ve renovated…you’ve changed my mind about their potential…wow! They turned out adorable!!!

My absolute pleasure, Kathy. Fun for me to share and do. We hope to have a wonderful time. I’m still pinching myself. 🙂
Sandi Holtzmuller says
Love them both, but would have to hang with the Cotton one!
Woot! I’m a white gal too. 😉
They are both beautiful! They look completely different than they originally did! Usually white is my preference, but in this case, I am in love with the caviar. 🙂
I’m so glad to hear it! It was a fun challenge to give them both new looks. Thanks!
Marcia B. DeSpain says
the first DB that i painted was a small chest using holy guacamole, was in love with the paints after that
I second that. On first dip I was hooked!
Frances Batson says
Wow. Deciding which I like best is hard. Both are so great!
I can’t pick either…haha!
Both cabinets are gorgeous, love how you totally transformed them…and gave me new ideas! I prefer the white cabinet, just because it would work better with all the grays and sea glass greens in my house.
That’s what it’s all about for me…inspiring. I’m happy to hear it!
LeAnn Thames says
Love both but the black is so pretty. I am painting my first Dixie Bell piece in Caviar. I am loving it so far.
LeAnn Thames says
Sweet! I’ve used it in so many instance and love it so.
Carol S says
I can’t decide which I like better. They both have their individual charm. Great job of showing your talent and how something can take on two different personalities. Thanks!
I feel the same, Carol. I could see them each in their own room in fun ways.
Adorable as usual. I like the one with the flowers in the back. Really Cute!
Thank you, Carole. 🙂
Elosia Reyna-Brooks says
I liked them both but I could picture the white one in my house. I have a couple of pieces of furniture that I have that I need to do something with but I have never painted furniture and I’m very nervous to get started. I have an old desk and a dresser/buffet that I need to work on. I’d also like to do my kitchen cabinets but my husband is not sold on how easy it is to use DBP. 🙂
I feel the same though I like both. Fun to think of the ways to use them. Funny how husband’s can be…meh. 🙂
Lynn Ransom says
Both look great, but going black this time.
Woot! Happy to hear it, Lynn. 🙂
Linda Johnston says
While I love both, I think I’ll go with the black! LOVE IT!
You’re so fun, Linda!
It’s so hard to pick which one I like best but I’d have to go w/the white one. I love the background of it, it’s more versatile. I have a few projects waiting for paint right now, a table that needs a white base.
Fun to hear. Thank you!
The lack is my favorite and I have plans for a Night stand!
You go girl! 😀
I love how you made them look so different! Thanks for your wonderful ideas.
I would have been bored doing them the same. This made it fun! Than you, Janina.
Mayda Ragsdale says
The much prefer the Cavier one, but the white one is pretty as well. Great job!
nice little makeover! And I like the black cabinet very much!
I’m so glad you do. Thanks!
Kathryn Kiiffner says
I love #2 and am looking to do something like this for a bathroom makeover I’m in the process of doing. I’m also in the process of painting two sets of bedroom furniture, so extra Dixie Belle would certainly help.
That sounds like fun!
So glad you went back for these. Once again you hit it out of the ball park. For me the lighter one works best best the caveat cabinet is lovely too!
All of your ideas are brilliant – my taste leans towards the black one. So rich compared to the before.
laura bernard says
I love the first one. I would paint a chest first!
Thanks! And sounds like fun too.
Barb Feidler says
Love the cotton with the paper background and the wire! These colors would be perfect for an attached frame collage I’m making!!
Ooh…there ya go! 😀
I am really loving cabinet #1 with the caviar! Great color and pattern combo. I know what you mean about the chicken wire. Hope you had a good stock of bandaids on hand.
haha…I am the one in the house that uses the most bandaids, so YES. 😀
I love white but I’m leaning towards the black cabinet! I have a few shelves that could be updated with some new paint!! I have not tried this paint yet and have heard so many good things about it! Thank you for this awesome giveaway!!!
I hear ya…hard to choose! 😀
Rhonda Fuller says
LOVE the black one! What a great idea!
Thank you for the smile, Rhonda. 😀
Sue Pagels says
They are both great, but I’d have to go with #2 – the chippy look paper backing did it for me! Where did you get that paper? I am sure I have read it on your blog, but I can’t recall. Great job on both of them!!
Awesome! I have the link above, but also used it on a hutch desk I have linked in the post and at the bottom. Here it is for the styles: http://amzn.to/2z1ngDH
Angie Foster says
I love #2!!! I would love to win!
You’re so fun! 😀
Love #1 !!! And I love Dixie Belle ! I’ve been looking for a project to do with chicken wire and you’ve inspired me for my daughters bathroom…now to find the right piece.
Thank ya! I hope you find one.
Robyn Wright says
What a great find! I’m so jealous! I love the white one!
Can you believe I left them there? haha!
Killer job with awesome creativity as usual 🙂
Thank you, Bryan. You know it was fun. 😉
Joyce Van says
I love the white cabinet. My next project is a small handmade oak stand with 1 drawer. You are a great inspiration and I love your blog !!
Hugs to you for the love, Joyce. Thank you!
Larissa, These cabinets have such character now, I really like the colors, well done! I can not choose a favorite, lol both cabinets are gorgeous!! You are also so sweet to help JC out!
I can’t either! tee hee! I’m sure he’s happy about it. 😉
I like the black one. I have same liner on my bathroom door
How fun is that?! woot!
What a great repurpose for these cabinets. I can’t even decide which one I like better. The white. No the black! Agh!
You are hilarious!
Caviar #1 is my fave!! – I’m always seem to be a day late and a dollar short 😀
You’re too cute, Fran. 😉
Judy J says
What an improvement to both! Gotta go with #1 for my home now… but #2 would have been my choice for my previous home.
You sound like me. My style is ever changing. Makes it fun!
Carol Claremont says
You rocked both of these cabinets – I love them both! Although the Cotton one would be a better fit in my home, there is just something about the Caviar paint with the aqua and that black and white print that just grabs me so I think that is my favorite. I have a smallish dresser that I want to paint white and the Cotton will be perfect!
Thanks! I think because the black is on the white wall it is more striking, but if the white were on a different wall color it would take on a whole new feel. Fun to play!
Thank you, Rosie.
Tough call! I’m not sure which one I like better – both just so adorable!
You’re so fun, Cathy!
Audra Taliaferro says
Love them both, but I think I would mix it up! White cabinet…floral backing paper!
Holly Middleton says
I can’t decide….. I really love both of them. Great job!
I’m right there with ya. Thanks! 😀
Bonnie Hipps says
This is so cool, I love them both but my favorite is the black one. You and Christy at confessions of a do iter are my favorite go to girls. I NEVER miss a week and you two never disappoint.
How fun! Christy is a kindred spirit and we have fun together. Thanks, Bonnie!
Linda Petteys says
If I have to choose I would say the darker one (with the Cavier). I love the look of the flowered paper with it. I have a dining room table and chairs waiting to be worked on plus a few small pieces that could use some refinishing. Thanks for the chance to win Dixie Belle paint!
Thank you for the love, Linda. Sounds like you have some fun ahead! 😀
Jennifer Creviston says
Larissa, both cabinets are so cute! You did an amazing job! I would have walked right past those cabinets, good eye! I really like both cabinets and would have both of them in my home but… I really like the white one. Yay! Thank you for the opportunity!
Jennifer Creviston says
Oops! I forgot! I’d paint my daughters vanity if I were to win. We were blessed to have been given the vanity by a friend but it sure needs a coat of paint!
Your project sounds fun!
Thank you for saying so, Jennifer. Fun to take something and make it new.
Both cabinets are awesome, but I think I like the black best with the amazing paper. If I were to win the Dixie Belle paint I would begin by painting a vintage wooden child’s chair that I came across at our local thrift shop. Right now it has been stained with a maple color, but has turned orange! Definitely in need of a face lift.
Black is always an awesome classic. Woot!
Lisa Wilson says
Love them both but if I have to choose I would say caviar!
Caviar for the win! 😀
I love cabinet 2! I have a nightstand that I’m getting ready to paint.
Thanks! Sounds like fun.
Mary Kaiser says
I LOVE both of them! I would pick the white one for my home, but I think the black one could go some where as well in my house. I think every thing you recreate is beautiful! I hope to win the prize package so I can recreate something so beautiful!
You’re sweet to say so, Mary. I know you can do it! 😉
Judy Martin says
ilike both but black the one I would want ,I would paint some selfs for my kitchen
Thank you, Judy.
Corry heinricks says
I think I like the black nest but both are gorgeous!! Thanks for the contest!!
So hard to choose! I’m happy that they black one has a new home already.
I love the white but the black really stands out!
It sure does against the white. The white one would even more on a different wall.
I will never look at these cabinets the same way again! These turned out fantastic! I would normally go right for the white, but I think the black one has my heart this time. Love them both though! XO
hee hee!! I still can’t believe I left them there. Oy! Thank you, Christy.
Sharri Sims says
I love the caviar cabinet. I just bought my first jar of Dixie Belle paint and can’t wait to use it!
You will love it!
Decisions, decisions. I love them both! The chicken wire & crystal knobs are a lovely juxtaposition. Love tge floral paper & your color combos. So pretty! ♡

I love that Vintage Duck Egg Blue! The coverage of the paint seems so nice and smooth, as well. Would love to give it a try, if you are so inclined to send it my way!
It is amaaaazing. Really!
Teresa Archer says
Thought Cotton would be my favorite but the Caviar stole my heart! Love the combo with the blue and the beautiful wallpaper. I’m lookimy at medicine cab inets different now.
Too funny! I think if I had staged the Cotton on a contrasting wall it would have done it better justice. Either way, I love them both too. 🙂
Kathy Wells says
Hi Larissa. I like the black cabinet, but it was a difficult decision! Both of them are so cute and I like the chicken wire on the doors. I would love to try the Vintage Duck Egg on a small end table that needs an update.
Glad to hear it, Kathy. Hard for me to choose too. 😉
Karen Baumgardner says
Hi, Love the black cabinet, it just calls my name every time. I think everything looks great in distressed black paint, and this turned out super cute. I can see why someone snatched it up right away. Would love to try those Dixie Belle paints, too. I’m just about to paint a wood shelf to go above a long picture n my dining room…thanks for the chance to win.
Can’t go wrong with black (or white) – both classic and can go with any style. So fun to do! 😀
Pamela Brazier says
WOW! What a great find. Love them both, but I’d choose the white one ? Another great makeover Larissa.
I think the same for me too, Pamela. Thank you.
I love them both but the black one really is my fave! My mother just came by with a child’s rocking chair that would be so much fun to paint.
Sweet to hear. Sounds like a cute project coming up!
Mary Milnarich says
I love them both but right now in my bath I would choose the cotton #2 simply because the walls are blue. I also had two medicine chests. although not as nice as your, and will be painting one of them next. thanks for sharing your projects!
Thanks for the love, Mary. My pleasure to share.
Dale Cundy says
Fantastic job Larissa……..My favorite is the Cotton white cabinet. I have the perfect place in my bathroom for this! I have so many projects that I could use Dixie Belle paint for. I would love to paint 2 wall cabinets and a corner hutch. ?

Funny how things grow on you, right? 😉

Caroline davis says
WHite one because of the peel and stick paper in the back and can crystal knobs! I would love to paint the cabinets in our camper that DUCKegg a!
Yahoo!! Super fun to hear, Caroline. Thank you!
Jana B says
You’ve nailed it again X 2!
Thank you for the big smile, Jana! 😀
I love both pieces kinda leaning more toward the white though – beautiful job on both !
Thank you, Terie. Fun to do.
I really like the cabinet done in the black because it stands out more but, the white would go so much better in my farm / industrial kitchen. I would use it on my kitchen table. I have never used any of the popular chalk paints like Annie Sloan or Dixie Belle and anxious to try them and see the difference in the better paints. I always look forward to your posts. I’m glad you post early because I can read them before heading off to work.
Setting is key too as I hung them both on a white wall. Fun to mix it up. Thanks for the love! 😀
I like both cabinets. They are both adorable. You have provided so much inspiration that I look at things a second time before I throw them out. Why just last night I was tearing all the old stuffing off an old ottaman on my back porch before the storm. The approaching storm made me work faster. I am thinking of making it into a plant stand. 🙂
Ooh…there ya go! So fun for me to hear, Celeste. Thank you!
Trish Shank says

My heart is always wrapped around the freshness of white, but I love me some contrast too. 😉 Thanks!
Wow this is a tough one to answer because I really like both of them. So I’m going to say both because it just depends on the circumstances of your decor. Love them both!
You are so right, Shirley. tee hee!
Mary Ann Monteforte says

Both are beautiful, so hard to decide…..depends on the rest of my home decor and color tone; love them both!

kelly kayfes says
I love both of these, you do a great job, loving your blog!
I’m so happy to hear it, Kelly. Thank you!
I love how the black one turned out. I am working on a cabinet right now and chose to do it in white. I would like to know how you finished them. Did you use wax? My cabinet will be in my half bath so I don’t have to worry about steam. I just don’t know how I want to finish it or if I need to at all.
Thank you. It depends on your location and if you want wear or not. I did not seal, but left as-is.
Wow! This is absolutely lovely!
How fun! Thank you.
Love Love Love your work!! Both of the pieces are amazing
I’m delighted to hear it, Savanna. Thanks!
Jennifer Drower says
These are both beautiful. I am partial to the white one, perhaps because I need storage in my bathroom and the white cabinet fits the color scheme. I can see the black one in a kitchen or dining room(???). I have an old marble-topped bureau that I’m planning on converting to a vanity with a sink for the bathroom and this paint will be perfect. Inspiration has struck!
So many ways to use them, right? One can never have enough storage. tee hee.
Marielle Lambert says
I really love the one with the patterned background…..it just makes me smile……..the first thing I would paint? Hmmmm……..not sure I have so many things that need some work….I guess it would be a music cabinet…my husband bought it on an online auction & didn’t realize that it really was in very rough shape….so lemon aid out of lemons I guess!
It adds the fun I love – thanks! You go girl on that lemonade. tee hee!
will be copying this went i start working on our bathroom updo. oh so cool!
I’m honestly liking the black one more than the white, but that might just be the decorating “mood” that I’m in lately. Where do you find the removable wallpaper?
I totally get it. 🙂 I have the link to the wallpaper in my post There are so many choices out there – makes it fun!
Melissa Stevenson says
