Open Staircase DIY

Ready to bring on the natural light? You bet! Ever since first touring my new home before buying, I knew I wanted to create more flow and light. That leads me to the next step in my family room remodel by creating an open staircase DIY style.

What you see below is the “before” of the wall in my family room that has the staircase behind it.

While I’m eager to just dive right in, I’ve actually been researching different ideas to tackle this.

One way I could do it is to completely demo the wall and add a header and railing.

However, I really don’t want to go that route since I want to keep it simple. That means I get to pull out my tools and cut into the wall without affecting the loadbearing status.

I do live in a two-story home with a slab foundation which also comes into play when considering a project like this.

Without any further waffling, let’s head over to my new site to see what I’m up to… literally. Plus, I have a sweet update to my garage build – eep! Tap/click the text or image below.

Also, I’m looking for feedback on my new brand transition. I’m still trying to please the Google gods so that my near-14-year stent continues on only with a new name –  Livin’ Real with Larissa. That’s it. Nothing else is changing, but so much work to prove I’m worthy. sigh.

Either way, I’m glad to be making these much-needed change for many reasons. I hope to continue to inspire!

You are amazing, to be working so hard when you don’t feel well. Opening up the staircase is genius and I can’t wait to see the final result. Hope you feel better soon!

    • Larissa says

Thank you, Mary, though maybe crazy is more like it. 😉 However, like many, I have to work to eat, so onward I go. I did have to take three full days of rest just to get my mojo back. I finished making cuts on the other wall yesterday, but that, too, was full of unexpected events. oy!

You’re a sweetheart, Sherin. Yes, never doubt my worth, but those that don’t see it. Hugs back at ya!

Larissa looks at things with fresh eyes, she problem solves creatively, and I love how she uses her "stash" of valuable "junk" in the process.

What attracted me to Prodigal Pieces at first was the business name. What kept me interested is her opening up to share her life with her readers. She shares her beautiful creativity, has tutorials in her blog and takes what was old and makes it new again. I have several of her beautiful pieces decorating my home.
