Reclaimed Wood Barn Rack

There I was just enjoying my run for the day in the middle of a misty morning rain when I turn down the street and saw this reclaimed wood barn planter just sitting there on the curb. It was as if it was cheering me on to hurry up and finish my run and rescue it. Obviously, I’m not able to nap it on the spot with dirt and all. ahem. However, that doesn’t stop me from finishing my run and grabbing my keys to my truck. mwahahaha…

Wouldn’t you just love to have a video of this whole meeting transpiring? I would laugh so hard! Anyhoo, here it is and I felt the need to make use of that good wood. Does it have damage? Yes. Does it have whimsy? Absolutely. Therefore, I aim to give it a mini makeover to keep it truckin’.

WHAT TO DO

First, I need to assess what I’m working with. So, I dig out the dirt. I don’t know about you, but I take my spent soil and use it in my yard to fill low spots. After that I spray it down with a hose and let dry in the sun for a few hours. Then, once I’m able to really take a peek, I find that some of the wood is destined for my burn pile. I remove the bottom planter and get a better look.

What I’m left with is the basic barn shape which suits me just fine. Next, I use the charred wood reactive stain to give it all a dark base.

After the stain cures, I then use my milk paint to give it a whitewash letting that charred stain peek through. I love me some layers.

While a barn made of barn wood is fun, it still needs function. So, with that I want to add hanging hardware so it can hang on the wall, but also some hooks. Not only that, but I also am adding some Quaker pegs so it can serve as a coat rack, towel rack, or whatever rack. And, of course, I need add whimsy with some hand-painted typography. eep!

Now that is a great upcycle! Glad you saved it from the landfill.

Good morning Larissa! I was at an auction and ended up with a planted very similar to this, I think! You know, one of those things they throw in when you’re bidding on something else! Anyway, I’m hoping it has this much charm and I can make it into something as well. Thanks for your inspiration!

So so original very unique. Job well done Larissa!

That turned out cute! Shaker pegs are so good for so many reasons.-and I like the black and white. Staging with the red accents just brings up the wow factor as well!!
I have to laugh at Gwen’s post. My last auction I bid on one accent chair and ended up with 3 and small homemade kids rocking chair, plus an old flimsy laundry cart. The chair I originally bid on is not suitable to be used as a chair.

hahaha!! Funny, not funny! I’ve been there too. I think that’s where I got the bug. My parents would take me to auctions and I loved to peruse the mixed lot boxes.

Great save, Larissa! I bet seeing the barn made you run faster to be sure it was still there when you were done. LOL I like your incarnation much better as a farmhouse coat rack. Too cute!

    • Larissa says

bwahahaha! Right? I honestly hoped someone else would get it because my stash is full, but I didn’t want it going to the landfill. 😉 Thanks, Marie!
