Back in the saddle again… It’s been a while since my last Reduce, Reuse, REFASHION time! The last Tuesday of the month, I like to break out a different kind of project. Sewing skills are not always necessary, but they are this time as I create a refashioned hoodie just for moi.
It’s rare that I take a minute to make something for myself as I typically create for others, and I love doing that too. For my vision, I head to the thrift store to find me a hoodie. With spring sports starting soon in Ohio for my two athletes, that means watching a tennis match or track meet in the snow and rain. Hoodies are great for layering and any anticipated weather and winds. And they’re oh, so comfy, right?
With an eep! and excited hop, I find this pink hoodie and just the color I was after.
It has text on the front and the back, but no problem! I’m going to make this my own and that means I need more hoodies. While shopping for myself, I find this one for my daughter who is a kindred spirit.
Both of these are literally like-new with oodles of fluff on the inside and not worn, if at all. After some selective picking, here is what I have in my cart.
CHOPPING TIME
First, as you can imagine, I need to take into consideration my end vision for my refashioned hoodie as well as what I have to work with. As I mention earlier, this pink one has text on the front and back.
To make this simple, I create a video tutorial for you as well as share more of the story that I encountered. ahem.
Want to give this a try? Here’s what you’ll need:
Refashioned Hoodie Tools & Supplies:
- 1 or two hoodies, at least, and anything else you’d like to refashion
- sewing scissors
- tape measure
- water soluble fabric pen or similar (tailor’s chalk, etc)
- sewing machine
- coordinating thread
- optional: wool felt, embroidery floss with hoop, patches, fabric paint… whatever floats your boat.
FIRST STEPS
First, as you can see in the video tutorial above, this is pretty straight-forward, and just basic sewing knowledge needed. Let me tell ya that my vertigo was INSANE!! The entire time at my machine I felt like my chair was on a boat and my sewing machine on a dock. So don’t look too closely at my stitching. gah.
Not only was the pink hoodie perfect fit, but the two others I bought were nice too, though they had bleach spots and stains. That also made it easier for me to chop them up. No worries, however, as I can use the scraps to make dog coats and pet bed for my local shelter. (see my DOG COAT tutorial HERE and my PET BEDS HERE)
My embroidery machine wouldn’t connect with my computer, my sewing machine foot broke, my light tablet broke, my embroidery hoop broke, and so on. AAAGGH!! I was about to pull my hair out. However, I’m super stoked with the outcome and hope my vertigo goes away sooner than later as I want to make more.
Can you see how I’m a bit wiggly in my stitching? haha. No worries. It’s for me and I enjoyed slamming through this to get it done by today.

You look adorable in that!!!! Is there nothing you can’t do???? 🤣 I’m so proud of you for taking time to look out for yourself. After so many years of looking after others, it’s time to look after yourself. I’m in the same place. It’s been interesting to discover “what do I want?” I’ve just sold my house and am looking to make a drastic move. So….. Rebecca – NC could be Rebecca – NM soon!! I’m scared, but excited. I don’t think I’ve ever made a decision this big based on just what I want. It actually feels amazing!!! Sending you love and hugs!!! 😍💕
aww… yay!! So funny is the MINUTE I lay it down on my sofa, my cat, Lily, makes herself a comfy spot on it. GAH!!
And, I’M ELATED FOR YOU!! Truly in tears. I’m on the same path… what do I want, where do I want to be. I know God is moving mountains for us both. Carry on!!
I do this with wrong size old T-shirts I don’t want to part with any time soon. So I sew then to another shirt . I like to add a bit of fabric detail around and wherever else. So fun
Yep. I do that too. Much fun indeed.
Perfect!! Way to personalize it…very cute! You are so blessed to be able to sew and actually come up with your own patterns. I think if I were able I could finally come up with the exact hoodie I’ve been looking for, for years! We went from -40 to 40 above so hopefully hoodie weather will hang on until the warm summer air gets here.
Thank ya! You never know until you try, Niki. 😉 We are at 51 degrees and sunny today and I’m giddy. It won’t last as we have snow until April Fun to walk Loula today barefoot and no coat though! 😉
I suffered with vertigo on and off for a few years, and found the best homeopathic remedy for it that actually works! Vertigoheel tablets…look them up online and see what you think; they were the only thing that actually made a difference for me. I’ve recommended them to many women with the same issue and they worked for them, too.
I have heard of them, and my vertigo is trauma related and has different means. I’m game for trying pretty much anything! 😉 Hope you like my hoodie.
You clever girl. Love it! Well done!! ❤
It was brewing in my mind for so long. Thank you.
