DIY Coffered Ceiling with Antique Barn Roof Shingles

The time has come for me to share with you the beginning of our family room remodel and the continuation of how we are making our house our home. There is not doubt that owning a home is an adventure and such a blessing. Never did I think we would be here for 15 years, but happily here we are. My goal today is to share with you yet another journey, update you on our past projects, and invite you to learn how to create your own DIY coffered ceiling. (so many have asked!) Let the fun begin…

Truthfully, I hadn’t intended to post much about our next room adventure until our kitchen was complete. If you are new around here, we are wrapping our our 2.5 year kitchen/dining/laundry remodel that began HERE. We did take last summer off to work on numerous outdoor projects too. What I am able to help with in the kitchen completion has been on pause. So, I decided it is time to jump-start our other room – the family room.

The story of our journey really began in 2003 when we bought this house and began the first remodel. Here is peek at the family room we saw when we moved in.

Pine paneling, old Berber carpet, and open fireplace with built-in bookshelves unseen. You can even still see the drop ceiling just above us. Boy, hard to believe my oldest was a toddler and I was expecting our second baby.

God moved mountains for us to be able to purchase this much of a home in the first place. Never in my wildest dreams would I think we could own a home in

Farmhouse Style Decor ~ How to add it to your home

You know I love me some farmhouse style decor. Do I live on a farm? No. Do I want to live on a farm? YES. Funny thing is I was born on a farm (and act like it too – ha!) and lived in rural life until I left the nest. So many of us adore the simplicity of farmhouse decor, but don’t live on a farm. However, we don’t have to wait for that “farm in the sky” to have it.  Whether it’s good ol’ fashioned farmhouse or modern farmhouse, you can get the look for less. Let me show you what I mean. (I have a video for you!)

First, let me say that country living is in my bones and one day I will get there whether here or in heaven. God hasn’t seen fit to bless me with that opportunity yet, so I am making the most of my blessings.

Kitchen Flooring Choices ~ Our Remodel Begins

Have you ever been told,”The grass doesn’t grow under your feet”? Well, that is true for me and my husband. We are always working on something, like my post demonstrated on Monday. Now that “something” is our kitchen. {{applause}} I am so absolutely excited to begin this venture that started a few years ago. Today, I want to show you the before(s) – yes, plural because there’s more than one –  and we’re going to focus on our kitchen flooring. Looking to do your kitchen too? We are sharing our tips on how you can choose the right kitchen flooring to suit your style and budget.

If you want to get caught up to speed on the rest of our home remodel, you can visit our master bedroom, bathroom, boys’ room, and patio. Let us know what you think while you’re there!

Our story begins in 2003 when we bought our house with one kid in tow and another on the way. This is what we saw in the kitchen…

Outdated Kitchen Remodel with New Flooring by Prodigal Pieces |

…yes, this is before we had a digital camera – I’m dating myself. ahem. We’ve got dark cabinets, linoleum, white laminate, and a whole lotta 80’s going on. If you were to do a 180° turn, you’d see the dining area.

This used to be a screened in porch at one time, hence the outdoor light fixture and faux door where the exterior door used to be. This berber carpet ran down the steps connected to our family room and could also be found in our bathroom. yuck.

We wanted to open up the space and create more of a unified room, so we took out the wall on the left and

DIY Faux Fireplace : Indoor or Outdoor

Last week, we revealed the fruits of our labor – our patio makeover. From top to bottom, everything was built or created by us, including our DIY faux fireplace.

Today, we’ve got the step-by-step tutorial for you to create your own custom fireplace. The best part is, this doesn’t have to be just for your outdoor project. Yay! Our DIY fireplace is a simple build that you can add indoors too.

*this project was sponsored by HomeRight and includes affiliate links so you can find the products I love to use too!

Our fireplace finished dimensions are 54¼” tall by 50″ wide, but you can adjust this to suit any space.

Boys Bedroom Makeover ~ Vintage Industrial Teen

I think we are crazy, at least I know I am. tsk. We have been working our hind ends off, and we can’t stop yet. One of our recent projects for the home is our boys bedroom, where our oldest and next to youngest get to live together. We’re calling this our teen room makeover because our new look will suit both, giving a chance for the younger one to feel “grown up”.

They love living together, even though it takes some work to keep things sane, but I know they wouldn’t have it any other way. When we first bought our home back in ’03, their room had brown Berber carpet, peach painted walls, and a giant funky plug-in light fixture on a brass chain. How’s that for retro for you? Honestly, with a little fixing up, it would fit right in to today’s modern decor and I’m sort of kicking myself for not keeping the fixture. Ah well.

Here’s where we were at the beginning. This room has been that peach then followed by this current beige color with pink carpet for our daughters. It wasn’t long ago that my hubby finally let me rip out the carpet to expose the gorgeous wood floors (thank you, Lord!). We’ve flip-flopped this room so many times, but now it will stay for our boys because the girls outnumber them and need the larger room.

This is a nice sized space, approximately 8′ x 12′ with closet. One mistake I have done, was to keep adding storage space in every inch I could. You may be wondering why that’s a mistake because storage space is good, right? Well, it tends to cause a person to keep more than they normally would. I created a monster by giving my kids too many places to store things and then we have repeated interactions about keeping it clean and how to maintain the “junk”.

In this makeover, I’m REMOVING some of that storage
