Apothecary Cabinet Makeover ~ A Trashure Story

I love my husband, JC, with all my heart and then some. He is my best friend and confidant, but he is also my polar opposite in many ways. Like they say, opposites attract, right? He is the reason that this forlorn piece of furniture is my subject for today’s Furniture Fixer Upper fun. Thankfully, I can laugh and have a go at making this into an apothecary cabinet. Stay with me, I’ll explain below. Oh, and be sure to read through to see the furniture makeover goodness from my friends too.

Filing Cabinet Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

JC had one job to do. Mind you he works full-time, is the one who ships everything for me from my shop, furniture and all, and is our main dude in our remodeling adventures. So, I guess he deserves a little slack, but…this happens A LOT.  I asked him to stop by and pick up this “filing cabinet” (as the lady described), but only bring it home if it was solid wood and would hold my files. ahem…does it look like solid wood to you? Kitchen Island Cart from Repurposed Materials

Do you ever feel the need to just purge and start fresh? That’s my life story. hahaha… I seem to be ever battling the need to destash my stash. People mean well when they give me stuff and I usually have a soft heart and take it. Then what…I store it forever and work like a mule trying to stay afloat. I’m not complaining, but have decided that this entire month is dedicated to tackling my workshop. No more furniture coming in (unless custom requested), no more anything until it is done. First up, I’m taking these louver doors and turning them into a repurposed kitchen island cart. Woot!

Old Louver Doors Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

Notice the loot surrounding them. See what I mean? An awesome local friend gave these to me along with a chest of drawers (see the makeover HERE) and a dresser (thank you, Becky!). I have a thing for shutters and knew I could find some use for them. But…it’s already been over a year and they need Read more

Antique Clamp Chair Made with Barn Wood

Sometimes it can be hard to let go of things. Especially things that have sentimental value. For me it was this 12′ wooden ladder that my dad had loaned us when we bought our first home. I remember as a child using it in my parent’s home to decorate our 20’+ Christmas trees in our living room while using a broom to string lights. Or dangling from it  to play with my siblings. Problem is, when my husband and I got possession of it, it fell in disrepair. ugh. It had to be outside for various reasons and it rotted away. Today it becomes something more. Let me show you how I made an antique clamp chair using this ladder for parts.

I suppose most people would just pitch or burn this thing, but I couldn’t do it. Too many memories and I felt as though I failed my dad. I dragged it up to he front of my house and used my jig saw to cut it into salvageable pieces late last summer. The promise to myself was to make use of this bit by bit and create some new memories.

Entry Storage & Organization DIY Building Plans

Are you always look for extra ways to store things? It seems as though there is always room for improvement in the area of storage in the average home. I like to try to make better use of what I already have too. It can even be as simple as finding new purpose for a spot in our home. When I spied this message center at the thrift store I had no idea that it would lead me to create entry storage.

It was kinda like if you give a mouse a cookie story (much like my patio makeover), except this is the thrifted message center sort of ballooning project. The idea was to show you how to get organized, but then it grew and I’m so happy it did because here is what I did with it… Read more

Sewing Table with Vintage Chic Vibe

Today’s post is kinda funny because it has a story behind it. First, it all started with this table that my parents gave me. I invite you to come read this post on my Facebook page and be sure to read the comments. I’ll fill you in as we go, but in the meantime, I’d like to show you how I turned it into a vintage chic sewing table.

Side Table Before Vintage Chic Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

We have always had modge-podge furniture because I get it second-hand, either by thrifting or handed down. Our last installment of furniture was leather and I was happy to have it, but it didn’t have a vintage feel to it. I thought if I could sell what we had to pay for a set more to my liking, I would have a go at it.

My heart was set on a soft brown leather set with nailhead trim to go with what I wanted Read more

Faux Clock DIY ~ Repurposed Fun

I am a mama on a mission – a mission to declutter and make use of everything I can lay my DIY hands on. My home has been overrun by my business (kinda like living in a warehouse) and I need things to be normal, at least somewhat normal – as if living with 6 kids is ever normal. ha! My latest subject for renewal is this Art Deco mirror back that I think will make an awesome faux clock for my mantel. Do you see the potential?

Salvaged Art Deco Mirror Backing Before Repurposing | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

This mirror back was originally going to be used in our boys’ bedroom makeover that had an industrial feel. You can barely see it, but we had already drawn on the word “GULF” as we were going to turn this into a vintage appeal gas station sign. But, we didn’t end up using it, so faux clock it is.

My mantel has been…well…neglected. I haven’t done much to it since my fall design and Christmas, but now it needs a summery makeover, don’t you think?

Faux Crate Drawers ~ Farmhouse Kitchen Update

You guys!! My family and I have been working so hard in our kitchen remodel while trying to keep up with life. (It happens, ya know.) I’m very excited to share with you the latest that we’ve been working on. For today’s post, I’ve had this project in my brain since FOREVER, and to see it finally come to fruition is wonderful. I’m going to show you how I took our boring builder grade kitchen drawers and turned them into faux crate drawers.

For those of you just joining in, I invite you to check out where we started from HERE, and then our last update HERE.

So…my email subscribers got to see this first, but here is how our ceiling looks now. *if you want to be in on the know, sign up for my newsletters either sign up in the sidebar on computer, or at the bottom of the page on mobile.

Farmhouse Beadboard Coffered Ceiling in Kitchen by Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

We love how much more bright and light our kitchen is without the faux beams we had originally. We’ve added recessed lighting to our kitchen, and new fixtures to our laundry, as well as updated our hot wiring mess.

Whomever wired this house is, well…scary! Our panel is a mish-mosh of connections that don’t make sense and my husband has spent his last four weekends in our attic roasting like a turkey fixing it all. That whole thing has eaten up our precious time, but we want to make it right. He even found a live wire just sitting up there – ask him how he knows. ahem.

While he’s doing that, I’ve been up to some repurposed fun. Enter in my kitchen drawers…
