Waterfall Buffet with a French Twist

There is nothing in the world that makes a mama more proud than to see their child succeed. I have 6 children, all of which are my treasures and bring such joy. Not only are they fun, but are showing my my hard work and love is paying off. My oldest son has done many projects of his own with much success. Today, he is taking this waterfall buffet and giving it a French twist. Check it out.

Mr I., like the rest of my kids, are building up a savings. Generally, when I get a free piece of furniture I give it to them and they take turns making them over. Also, they purchase their own project pieces based on my suggestions to sell for the savings. You see my kids projects in this collection of posts.

In this case, Mr I. decided to purchase two Read more

Vintage Tea Cart Refreshed

A couple posts ago I mentioned that I had been on the hunt for a chair to go with a desk, but somehow came home with much more. ahem. That’s what happens when you hit the thrift stores. We have a few locally and I’m ever so thankful. However, what ends up jumping in my truck? Not a chair that I needed. Oh no. An adorable vintage tea cart. tsk. Does this ever happen to you? (please say yes so I know I’m not alone, k?) This is perfect for today’s Furniture Fixer Uppers! You’ll see more in a minute and have a chance to WIN.

Art Deco Chest with a French Twist

Do you ever make a vow or promise to yourself and then for some reason decide to break it? sigh… I just did and I always ask myself…”Why did I do that??” Enter in this Art Deco chest…

My vow was this: to never, EVER, under any circumstances will I buy another piece of furniture to work on THAT IS PAINTED.

Look at what I bought (yes, actually paid for) off of Craigslist.

Isn’t it cute? You know I’m a sucker for these waterfall pieces, especially since the first vanity I did had me hooked. I only spent a bit for this Art Deco chest. However, keep in mind, free and cheap mean work. nuff said.

Many on Instagram saw this and said, “I like the blue!” So do I (cause you know I’m all about blue), but someone else painted this and there are flaws. For instance, the top of the chest has cracked veneer underneath, the paint job was so-so, and more was wrong like the broken casters, etc.

Otherwise though, this is a solid piece with not only dove-tailed drawer face joints, but also those dove tails at the back.

They just don’t make them like this anymore – which is why I had a regression in my vow. Do you blame me? These are the sort of things that make my heart go pitter-pat.

Sooo…I started out using my sander to see how those veneer cracks would hold up. Low and behold what I figured would happen did. Read more

French Country Blue ~ My Craigslist Score

You know I love a good furniture makeover, so what could be better than one day a month dedicated to themed furniture makeovers? Wahoo! Today’s theme is FRENCH, and ooh la la, I’m ready to play with my French country blue.

My blogging friends and I have created some wonderful inspiration and eye-candy for you with our French makeovers, so be sure to check out all their fantastic efforts below.

The inspiration for my makeover was this French Provincial set I found a few months back on Craigslist. I originally stuck it in my shop as a custom request, but quickly took it back out when I saw the upcoming theme.

It’s a Dixie DuBarry set (a coveted design in the furniture world) in great structural shape, but did have some minor flaws like highlighter marking on the tops, marker, crayon, and wear in a couple of spots in random places. Nothing that a new look couldn’t fix. Read more

Faux Zinc Finish with Paint

One of my favorite naturally occurring things on this planet is patina. But, “What’s patina?” you say. The definition by the book is, “a surface appearance of something grown beautiful especially with age or use”. Patina is what today’s post is all about…creating beauty without having to wait decades, years, or even days. I am going to show you how to take most anything, even a box store plastic planter like this one found at Wal-Mart for $21 look like faux zinc…

Antique Vanity found Curbside to French Beauty

One of my favorite times each year comes in early April when our city has a four-week long cleanup, where everyone can set up to a pickup truck load of unwanteds curbside. That my friends, is a picker’s dream. This time around I scored an antique vanity. SCORE!

It would take me all day to share with you the goodies I have scored over the years, from an old piano face used in my bedroom to perfectly functional antique furniture.  I call it “Trashure“. Amazing what people will throw out. Hence the saying, “One man’s trash is another woman’s treasure”. tee hee hee.

This year though, I had made a promise to myself to not go “junking”. My workshop was full and I really didn’t want to bring home more stuff until I cleaned it out. I was doing good until my neighbor came over and said, “You should really go see this desk around the corner. I think it’s an antique and something you would like. The trash truck is coming, so you better hurry up.” Alarm bells go off in my head and my pulse quickens.

Needless to say, I quickly crammed packed up my 6 kids and headed around the corner to find this…

Ummm….yeah…that would be a GORGEOUS ANTIQUE VANITY!! I stuffed that baby into the back of my suburban with it hanging out over my tailgate. It’s all good since I didn’t have far to go, but one things for sure, I wasn’t leaving it there.

Now, here’s where the fun begins. Read more

…and my own pillows, decor…you get the idea. I love it!

For this post, I’m going to introduce you to my oldest son, Mr. I, so he can show you how easy this method is – that even a teenager can do it. He is one of my six budding apprentices, and has been working alongside me for quite some time. Mr. I enjoys creating his own masterpieces, and selling them in my shop and locally to create a nice savings for himself.

It’s fun to help him find pieces that are deemed worthy of a makeover, and assist here and there, but for the most part, he does all the work. Here’s his latest vintage garage sale find…a solid wood Queen Anne coffee table.

Vintage Dressing Table French Country Makeover

There’s no mistaking that I am drawn to dressing tables and vanities. They’re so unique and full of elegance. At some point they have fallen to the wayside as far as being a piece of furniture on demand, but they are quickly making a come-back as a much desired addition to the bedroom decor. I can see why. They’re functional as a desk, mirror for morning makeovers, and a fun place for a lady to call her own.

It wasn’t too long ago that I acquired this vintage dressing table off of Craigslist, and it actually ended up being sold by a friend and neighbor from just around the block. Although it may look like an antique, it’s really a Mid Century Modern piece made to look as if it is has been around for ages. Quality made with dove-tailed drawers and gorgeous veneer, this dark beauty was in great shape for the most part, but did have some wear and missing parts.

The overall finish had held up well on top, but what really struck me was that the pulls were plastic. Really? Did they have to go there on this beautiful piece? Some were busted, of course, and I knew that this girl needed some new jewelry (aka. hardware) Read more
