Each month I have fun participating in our Themed Furniture Makeovers, and this time around I’m letting my oldest son step up to the plate with his latest project piece, a vintage chest of drawers. AND…I have an awesome giveaway for you!
I totally encourage my six children to join me in my work and they are always chomping at the bit to have some fun with paint and learn a trade. When I went to pick up the primitive cupboard, I just used to show you how to update old wood with stain, the lady also offered us this vintage chest. My furniture lovin’ self could have taken it as my own. However, I offered it to my son and he chose to purchase it. (he knows to bring his wallet along when mama is on an adventure. hee hee)
Not only is it as solid as a rock, but it also took us a great amount of effort to get it down her narrow, twisting flight of stairs. Oh, the stories we have!
Although it has some deep scratches to the drawer fronts, those may have come out with sanding. Also, the top had worn through spots as well.
You can see some of his past work on this industrial table and his vintage desk set. The theme for the month is NEUTRAL, and he debated on doing a paint stain combo to showcase the wood. However, since the gouges were deep and the theme is open to interpretation, he went with his gut and decided to paint.
PAINT TIME
First, he sanded down the finish with my orbital sander to give the paint tooth. With that in mind, when painting a piece of furniture that has either a mahogany or cherry stain, it is best to use a stain blocking primer like Kilz.
Poor guy is crammed in our living room trying to paint as our kitchen remodel has deemed our house a storage unit. tsk. Nonetheless, he’s used to it. Then, when the primer is dry, he chose a gorgeous color. Last, after two coats of paint, and a topcoat of wax, it’s time for some bling!
My son chose these amazing gold glass knobs. He loved the look of my industrial dresser and his sister’s dresser that we worked on. I wish you could see them in person because they have an awesome crackle design.
THE REVEAL
Finally, put it all together and what do you get? A gorgeous vintage chest with a modern look.
Didn’t my teenager do GOOD?! I love the color and those knobs made the piece.
Nothing like seeing your children learn from you and seeing the fruits of their labor. Additionally, if you would love to own this vintage chest, you can find it available in myonline shop – we ship to your door!
Sometimes your outdated furniture just needs a lift to help see them in a different way. Likewise, this is totally a budget-friendly way to make your house your home.
In addition, pin and share to inspire others too! ♥
Next week, I’ll be sharing more DIY projects and furniture fun. Become a follower or sign up to my email list to get updates in your inbox.

Bliss is such a pretty color. I have used it on a few projects. And, I love Rustic Brands!! They have so many great options. My daughter has started wanting to help me paint. I think it is so important for my kids to see the entire process. Love this makeover. That dresser is such a great piece!

If I won the gift card, I would order the kitchen mixer wall clock! That is so cute. Hard choice, they have some gorgeous fashion scarfs, love the “coffee before talkie” coffee mug, cute wall art. Did not have time to look through every single item, but they have a lot! The owl contact lens case is adorable too. But the mixer clock – that is awesome. Thanks for the link to the website, have never heard of that company.

Your son did such a good job! My 3 year old is already my little painting helper buddy. He has his own table and paint brush that he “works” on while I’m painting my own pieces :). And this is such a fun giveaway. Catching Fireflies has the cutest gift ideas.

Sandra Jantzi says
Love the dresser! I love to see kids get creative. Thank you for the opportunity to win a gift card from Catching Fireflies. I think I’d like one of everything in their store! But the thing that caught my eye the most were the handwarmer mugs. I can just picture myself standing on my deck in the early morning hours with a hot cup of java!
Larissa says
Thanks for sending encouragement, Sandra! It’s so fun to watch him learn and grow. Those mugs would be utter bliss on a cool morning!
Sandra Jantzi says
When painting dresser drawers, do you also paint the interior? Or do you only paint the face of the drawer? Seeing your projects makes me want to try tackling an ugly dresser we have in our guest room.
Larissa says
It depends on the piece. Sometimes yes, and sometimes no. Typically it’s just the faces I do. I’m happy to hear you’re going to tackled that beast! 😀
Susie@TheChelseaProject says

He did a great job, I love it, it really is beautiful.
I love that you are teaching your children a skill that they can use their whole lives, no matter what line of work they go into. this also teaches them self discipline and a work ethic, you go mom, keep doing what you are doing and your kids will grow up to be productive good citizens, most importantly they will be good human beings.
Larissa says
Thank you so much. I want my kids to be kids and grown adults who contribute rather than take away from society. I can only pray that my efforts will be fruitful.
