Truth be told, it’s actually a bench from an organ we used to own. Once upon a time we were given a free organ and had a blast using it along with our  antique upright grand piano you see above. The organ eventually Read more

Modern Chic Makeover for Art Deco Nightstand

My kids are with me in my daily grind and I love to include them in my projects as well as giving them projects of their own. One day that won’t be with me and I want them to have wings to fly. I feel that learning a trade, along with a scholarly education in homeschool, is crucial. My efforts to broaden their horizons includes working alongside me as the eagerly request to learn. Today, my oldest daughter, Miss C, is getting to work on this Art Deco nightstand by giving it a modern chic makeover.

Whenever I receive a piece of furniture for free, I let one of my six kids have at it. Both of my parents have generously given various items for them to work on, and this time my father gave us this piece to revive along with a dressing table. I am working on the dressing table and my daughter gets to revive this rough-looking nightstand.

Turns out this is a piece made by Virginia House Furniture right here in the U.S. and this company is still making handmade furniture today. Isn’t that cool?

Vintage Chest Gets Modern Makeover

Each month I have fun participating in our Themed Furniture Makeovers, and this time around I’m letting my oldest son step up to the plate with his latest project piece, a vintage chest of drawers. AND…I have an awesome giveaway for you!

I totally encourage my six children to join me in my work and they are always chomping at the bit to have some fun with paint and learn a trade. When I went to pick up the primitive cupboard I just used to show you how to update old wood with stain, the lady also offered us this vintage chest. My furniture lovin’ self could have taken it as my own, but I offered it to my son and he chose to purchase it. (he knows to bring his wallet along when mama is on an adventure. hee hee)

Emboss Furniture with Stencils

Whether it’s embossed glass, paper, metal, or wood, I have always been intrigued by that design element. I love to create that effect in my artwork whenever possible. So it may not surprise you that I also emboss furniture too. It is so absolutely easy and only take a few basic materials. Let me show you what I did with this worn out jewelry armoire.

The story behind this piece goes like this: I went to pick up an antique nightstand from a guy that I had just spoke with the night before. While on my way there with kids in tow, my oldest began to feel ill. I didn’t want to go back home and stand the guy up, so we headed over anyway with my oldest’s permission.

Turns out the guy sold the nightstand before I got there (me not happy at all) Read more

Update Furniture with these Simple Steps

It’s been a while since I’ve worked on a larger piece of furniture, so it feels good to get back in the saddle again. Often when my husband is making a delivery to cities that are an hour or so away, I always jump on Craigslist to see if there is something in the same area that would be a candidate for a makeover. While delivering the settee I just finished, I had him pick up this Mid Century dresser. I thought this piece would be a perfect candidate to show you how to update furniture in a few easy steps.

This dresser is as solid as they come with a stout design, sturdy dove-tailed drawers, and ornate details. I like the design of this one because it appears to have nine drawers, but actually only has six. Plenty of storage and space in there. The only thing wrong with it was that the finish had been worn (that 1960’s speckled veneer-type finish), and an update would do this brown beast justice. Read more

Top 10 Makeovers of 2015

As this past year flashes by and we are already a few days into 2016, I wanted to take a minute to look at my year in review and share my Top 10 Makeovers of 2015. Fun, right? It is amazing to see God working in my life and of my family. I want to share the blessings with you and offer you a surprise for helping me out with a little something later on.

Let’s get this party started!!

Top 10 Makeovers of 2015 | Prodigal Pieces | www.prodigalpieces.com

Crazy as this sounds, my #1 top viewed post of 2015 was not a makeover, but a tip. Yep, a last-minute, grab-my-camera, and why-not-share-my-quirky-habit type of post. My “Natural Ant Control with Grits” post blew up and was by far number one. I guess I’m not the only one with the pesky little critters each spring.

A bit of controversy arose about my post and several naysayers appeared, but I tell ya, it works. Whether it kills them or just feeds them so they don’t come in…I don’t care. I like ants, just not in my home, right?

Vintage Desk Makeover by Teen Boy

Last week while I was working on my curbside settee makeover, my oldest son had picked a new project for himself to work on as well. He recently reworked a little girls vanity and it sold quickly from my shop, and we were looking for another large piece for him when I spied this vintage desk on Craigslist.

It had been for sale for a little while and I was keeping an eye on it for a potential project for myself. Since I had plenty to work on, I asked my son if he wanted to have a try at it. I contacted the owner and it turned out to be a neighbor two houses down. Small world, eh?

She was so nice to let us come over and take a peek. I was a bit hesitant to let my son take on the desk because the top had a split in it where the boards had warped and lifted. I didn’t have much time to spare to help him out fixing it, but we decided to take it anyway. Read more

My very first project EVER, was this little Art Deco waterfall vanity I found at Goodwill for $5. This was before they’ve started to jack up their prices ridiculously for damaged goods. tsk.

16 Amazing Vanity Makeovers from Art Deco to Antique - a must see! by Prodigal Pieces. www.prodigalpieces.com #prodigalpieces

Not having really started furniture for sale yet, it sat for a few months before I could tackle it because I was already painting the exterior and interior of our home all by myself. But boy, what a job this little thing was! The veneer was in horrible shape and the entire piece needed sanded down and repaired. It had no mirror, but I found one through Etsy. It arrived busted and FedEx replaced it with a new one. Whew!

The rest of these won’t be in chronological order, but pretty close, and I’ve tried to find all the various ones I’ve worked on. Crazy to see how my photography and staging have changed.

This next Art Deco beauty I named, My Painted Lady. What a glamorous piece that convinced me paint can do amazing things.
