Do you ever find yourself wanting to venture off on a slightly-different-than-normal course? I typically am drawn to the shabby cottage chic, rustic french farmhouse, and Nordic styles, but every once in a while I like to change it up a bit and have a bit of fun. Much like I mentioned in my industrial desk post or like the custom Mid Century dresser I did for a client seen below.
Enter in this lovely console style Mid Century dresser…
(sorry for the awful picture, but it had to be a quickie when I had a minute – that’s what happens when you have 5 children, a cat and a dog running around…ahem) |
When I first see this dresser, I am heading home with my kids in tow. It is sitting on the curb outside of a house under renovation. Normally, I would have grabbed my son and jumped out of the truck to snatch it, but I was pregnant so no doing. Solution? Take all the drawers and cram them in, then head home to call hubby to pick up the remnant shell on his way home. SCORE!
MID CENTURY LOVE
I adore the lines and geometric style. It just needed a little bit of love.
It’s not often I step outside the chalk paint “box” and use other types of paints, (since it’s my all-time favorite paint) but I knew this one would look glamorous with a coat of white to set off those funky drawers.
This was my first time using a sponge roller to apply the paint, rather than a brush. The rollers give a nice stroke-free finish. As you can see, it went very well. So much so that I think I’ll try it again on another project. Have you ever used a roller instead of a brush?
Here’s how it came out…
I’m loving the contrast! It makes me wish I had a house, with a different room for all the different eras. Wouldn’t you?
Also, notice no pulls on the drawers, just smooth sleek lines and plenty of storage space.
It is perfect at center stage in a modern setting or as an entertainment console, don’t you think?
This lovely piece is currently for sale in my my shop (SOLD). Stop by and check out my other pieces for sale too. Sign up for my newsletter to get your FREE Furniture Buying Checklist and special discount to my shop.

Great job! Mid-century has certainly made a come-back. Makes me wish I had kept my parents bedroom set! We sold the whole thing when we sold the estate. Sad:(

Hi Larissa. Nice job on the piece. Came out very nice. If you don’t mind, I just have to give you some info on the other mid-century modern piece that you have pictured above it. (art deco was from the 30-40’s) This piece is from the early 60’s. It was from the “Brasilia” line made by Broyhill. It was made of walnut (not oak). They are in such high demand out here now! That dresser fetches an average price of $1000-1500! Google it! I’m sure you got a killer deal on it. If you ever find another one, you’ll be prepared!! Sorry, don’t mean to sound snooty, I just thought you’d like to know. I work on those mid century pieces quite often. It took me months to find a Brasilia that was a reasonable price. Just for giggles, look at LA Craigslist and type in Brasilia. You’ll see.

very cool! Would never have thought of that finish! I’m curious, how do you ship furniture when you sell on Etsy?

I love that you left the wood on the fronts. The white makes it fresh and pretty, too! I’d love for you to share some of your projects on my link party. The very first one is on Friday, Jan 31st at FlyingC-DIY.com. Hope to see you there!
