Thrifted Vanity Set Makeover DIY Style

Woot! Woot! I’m excited because today I am taking part in the Swap It Like It’s Hot blog party where a huge group of 40 bloggers have an annual swap for some thrifted finds costing $10 or less. I send some goodies to a friend, while someone sends some to me, and we all get to see what each person does with them. Isn’t that fun?! Check out how I made a thrifted vanity set.

Here’s what I receive from fellow DIY blogger, Erin Spain

Hmm…now at first you make think that’s some pretty boring stuff, but I see potential. This collected assortments has sort of a general theme running through it, so I do the next best thing to bring it all together into a thrifted vanity set…PAINT. tee hee hee.

DIY TIME

In order to prep these items, I use basic household rubbing alcohol to make sure the surface is clean.

My paint color of choice is this gorgeous color, Sea Mist by Rustoleum. You know my favorite furniture color is Aqua, so it is meant to be.

THE REVEAL

Finally, after a few coats of paint, my vanity set is brand new.

I added a bit of padded material to that game box and turned it into a jewelry box.

Additionally, that color is perfect for this collection and I seriously can’t say enough how easy this was to put together.

And what doesn’t this vanity set look good paired with vintage books? tsk.

While normally my projects head to my online store, this set is staying with me. Doesn’t it look great in my bedroom?

Now, the next time you head to the thrift store, be sure to take a closer look and see how you can create your own budget decor.

In addition, pin and share to inspire others to do the same – thanks! ♥

Likewise, now for my part of the swap…here is what I sent to Jamie at That’s My Letter.

Thank you! That color is right up your alley, Shanna. 😀

  2. Patty says

It looks very pretty especially the way you have them displayed. I collect hammered aluminum and I don’t know if I could paint it, but I still think it looks pretty and actually if I see a piece that can’t be shined up I might give this a try especially the turquoise, one of my favorite colors.

    • Larissa says

I really had a hard time deciding, but I wanted a matched set, so paint it was since it had a bit of damage. Thanks so much, Patty!

  3. Jessica Gourley says

LOVE that pretty aqua! 😉 So clever to keep the 3 items together- I especially love the bookends! Great job!

  4. Jillian says

I think that is my new favorite color! Great job Larissa.

It looks so much better with the perlescent effect up close. So pretty! Thank you. 🙂

    • Larissa says

Thanks, Erin! I had fun and thank you for the fun challenge.

  6. Dena says

Very cute! Love that Social Etiquette book, too!

    • Larissa says

Thank you! Can you believe I found it in the trash? Crazy. 🙂

    • Larissa says

You and me both! Those “bookends” had hollow core, and I wish I could have used them in another way, but I like them as book ends. Thanks for the love!

    • Larissa says

Thank you so much, Charlotte, and for creating this fun swap. 😀

Larissa looks at things with fresh eyes, she problem solves creatively, and I love how she uses her "stash" of valuable "junk" in the process.

What attracted me to Prodigal Pieces at first was the business name. What kept me interested is her opening up to share her life with her readers. She shares her beautiful creativity, has tutorials in her blog and takes what was old and makes it new again. I have several of her beautiful pieces decorating my home.
