Are you ready for some fun? A healthy debate is always good, especially in family. My oldest son, Mr. I and I both had vintage buffets to work on and I challenged him to a Battle of the Buffets. Loser makes all! That means the loser makes a dessert of choice for the winner. mwahahaha!! First, to get us started we’ll begin with this buffet makeover. Let’s get our DIY on!
Mr I. is no newbie to this game, so I have my work cut out for me. You can see his past work in his own makeovers HERE. Seriously, it’s hard for me to believe that not only am I a mom to a teenager, but he’s already out-growing me. I’m not short at 5’10”!
Nevertheless, he is still my baby and I love him and his 5 siblings with all my heart.
WE BEGIN
Okay, shall we get at it? Enter in the first contestant…
This leggy beauty is gorgeous in design, has ample uses as an intended buffet, entry console, or even an entertainment stand. However, at some point it succumbed to a chemical mess that stained the top and missing chunks of veneer on the sides.
First, just to make sure the top was a no-go, I sanded it down with my sander and found what I hoped I wouldn’t – the stains were there to stay. Bummer!
TIME FOR PAINT
Onward we go… To begin, since my alternative was to give this piece a fresh new look, I start out with this caramel-color paint I first used on my faux wood garage door makeover.
After that, when I got to the legs, I switch to different because it totally makes painting spindles and turnings a breeze. No need to flip the brush in a thousand different angles to get coverage.
Next, once I got two coats of the color on, it was time to create some depth to this piece and draw out all those gorgeous details. In addition, like I’ve shown you in all these posts, I am using my glazing technique to wash the buffet with a white paint, then wipe off.

THE REVEAL
Last, when everything was cured, I added a protective layer of my handmade furniture wax. It gives it a soft glow that I just adore.
This buffet makeover came out as I had hoped. As usual, I’m always addicted to glazing and how it brings out all those scrumptious details.
And what’s a buffet makeover without a little fun, right? In addition to the outside color, I added a pop of color to the inside. Same color that Mr. I used in his chest makeover seen HERE.
Finally, there you have a refreshed antique buffet makeover, complete with glazing and some color fun. If you love this piece, it is now available in my online store.

I love everything you come up with, Larissa! In fact, I was at the recycling center the other day and picked up a lovely pine cupboard (one runner missing from a drawer but otherwise in great shape) AND there was a VW round medallion tied to the fence just waiting for someone to claim it! The young man said it had been sitting there for years and no one had ever asked for it! lol… I thought of BEEP (In fact I made then log onto the internet so I could show them BEEP lol). I would definitely work on this new pine cupboard if I won the Zibra paint brushes! Fingers crossed! Can’t wait to see what your son has done with his buffet!

The white glazing really highlighted all the gorgeous details of the buffet and the blue interior is fabulous. Your son looks so much like you and seems to have gotten your DIY skills too. Love how it turned out! I’d paint this little ugly 1990s shelf I found at a thrift shop. It has and elk etched into a mirror and that mini railing that was on everything! Those will be gone. But it totally has potential! It’s going to be super cute!

Beautiful job on the buffet! I love the lining in the inside! The first thing I would do with the brushes is an old 1970’s stereo that is in our sunroom that has wonderful sounds but it’s looks need an update. The second think I would tackle would be my kitchen cupboards!

Yikes I didn’t answer your question in my first comment! I have a 40’s era vanity that has damaged veneer on top but lots of beautiful details and a mirror that swings out. I think I should paint it for one of my granddaughters who are all young adults now.

I have an antiqued picture frame that needs painted and glazed. My Zibra brush is almost dead. I need a new one – or 3!
Have you tried soaking it in vinegar? It will soften the brushes and loosen built-up paint to make it new. Leave it overnight. 😉

I would paint the front of my bathroom door, it is hollow core and not very pretty. Talented children, great to see their work.

Hi, Teresa. It was a latex paint and then topped with a thinned paint (or you could use glazing or wax – glazing is expensive and is basically paint that has an additive to keep it from drying fast). Hope that helps! 😀
