It seems there is nothing that can be done simply. At least for me… haha. While my goal was to share with you my bathroom makeover… again, it kinda blew up in my face.
I’m keepin’ it real y’all.
However, before I start up this DIY machine, let’s take a look at my simple bathroom over the years beginning with present day.
First, just under two years ago I became so tired of the gray walls in the space that I wanted color. (See the full DIY HERE)
It’s so pretty!
Hey, it was the dead of winter, and I was dealing hard with many things, so color pop is what I needed.
IN THE PAST
Next, let’s do a quick flashback to where it all started back in 2003 when I move into this home.
Hard to see here, but there is a green toilet and matching green tub with a clear plastic drop ceiling. SEE THE REMODEL HERE.
ugh.
Then, while pregnant with my second of six kids, I paint it a maroon/purple-ish color when the tub and toilet replacement happens.
Then, before gutting it completely, I paint a green for a temporary fix, followed by the complete overhaul where everything came out, even the window. Last, enter in this gray as the main color.
NEEDED CHANGE
That leads me to today.
After painting my bedroom in color block style with the red and white, I didn’t like standing in my bathroom seeing the colors clash.
What is more, the blush color reminds me of a very stressful time. (see all Life Updates HERE)
I want soothing in all areas of my life and even told my kids when I originally went pink that it wouldn’t last long.
And because I have the teeniest, tiniest bathroom, I can have it painted in half a day. tsk.
Over the last few years, I kept wanting to paint it back to the green that I love so it can be brighter in there again and feel open.
Using my exterior home color that I custom mix, I get angry again that the silly company that bought the bank-owned home behind me painted it the SAME color that I took so much time to pick and mix. AND, we had been matching color houses for a decade before, same siding, etc. and I wanted to be different. {{head smack}}
Thankfully, however, Loula and I’ve met the new homeowners and their dog, Zelda. I’m happy to have folks to talk to and Loula to have a sweet, new buddy!
To make my project fun, I blast music while I dance about.
Lemme just say that having bilateral vertigo while dancing while rolling my walls makes for a drunken trip like I’ve never had before.
Honestly!
I’ve never been drunk or have ever had alcohol or non-medicinal drugs, so this is the closest I’ll get to trippin’.
And trust me, trippin’ I do… remember my recently fractured thumb? still so owie.
That’s why I’m rebranding to Livin’ Real with Larissa. More on that soon!
THE SCREAM
Then it happens…
On the second day, the day I planned to second coat, finish touch-ups and work on other parts of this bathroom makeover, there is a scream.
While letting the paint cure, I wash three loads of laundry, including sheets that I like to hang outside to line dry.
After my second load washes, I put what I don’t dry on the line into my dryer (not enough room on my line) and walk outside to hang up laundry.
The second I come back in the door, I see Loula standing with ears down and wide eyes and hear the highest pitch SCREAMING coming from my laundry room.
I shut off the washer. That wasn’t it.
I shut off the dryer. BINGO.
After I was enjoying my painting and having fun trying to relax, I know have to tear apart my dryer.
NOOOO…
I dive in and find my idler pulley is the screaming demon.
Then, I head off to the store and get a new one. whew.
SCREAMING STOP
You see, the tricky part about this is my wretched thumb mixed with vertigo makes this not quite as fun as it used to be.
I have to hold that drum in place while threading the belt back onto the pulley and motor at the same time with my injured hand.
I finally finagle the belt on and then reattach the dryer front.
As soon as I think I’m in the clear, I drop a machine screw inside and UNDER the exhaust. INSIDE the doggone dryer I just put back together.
gaaaaaaahhh!!
Thankfully, I can take it apart fairly quickly and have my vacuum nearby and am able to suck it out. I would have had to tear apart even more than before if the vacuum didn’t work.
Dryer is now quiet, and my nerves ARE NOT.
Task is done with more time spent driving to get the part than it did to repair it. And without and video or blog tutorials, thank you very much. ahem.
BATHROOM MAKEOVER DONE AGAIN
Finally, though not as much completed as I want, here’s my soft green bathroom makeover again.
I don’t know about you, but I sigh a sigh of relief when I see it done. And even a tear or two.
Remember, it’s not about the actual project, but what path I’m on.
There used to be eight towels in here, I bathed my babies in here, I cried many tears in here for many reasons.
God is good.
Healing is moving forward.
Nevermind that in my recent post I mention how while I was repairing my water heater, the shower adapter broke. Just after I replace it, the tile shelf was hanging out of the shower wall.
Also, if you notice in all my recent room remodels/makeovers, I’m barely decorating at all.
NO more cleaning meaningless items for me. I want to have less to do with “stuff” and more time for peace.
I’m done with this bathroom for now as I have more pressing needs, like the minute I finished this post my new roof has a tiny leak after a humongous downpour. sigh.
But… I want to do more in the bathroom – maybe in winter.

Hi Larissa, I’m sorry for all you’ve been through with this. You are amazing – how you cope with and overcome it all is incredible.
That said, my main takeaway from all this is when you said, “NO more cleaning meaningless items for me. I want to have less to do with “stuff” and more time for peace.”
Speaking as someone that is currently trying to turn their home, and therefore life, around by clearing the accumulation of 50+ years of clutter, this is really inspirational.
Thank you Larissa, wishing you peace.
Sherin xxx
Hi Sherin! It’s literally every day for me my whole life, so I’m used to it, but I do tire of it for sure. John 16:33 “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”
As for the stuff… yes!! I never was a clutter bug, but since understanding my trauma and abuse I even yet kept more than I needed, so truckloads of things have left my house a couple of years ago and I still want to get rid of more.
You’ve got this! {{hugs}}
You are beyond amazing! Most of us would be picking up the phone to get that dryer fixed, not you. You head for the store. After your most difficult times, this must be a piece of cake. The bathroom looks great, much easier on the eyes. Blessings to you!
Or cray-cray!🤪 Haha… I’ve had so many dryer repairs with 6 kids that I cloth diapered it was do or die. haha. And, like this one, it’s on a Sunday and I need my bedding back. I’d rather I know how anyway, and this was fairly simple aside from time involved. Just frustrating!
Thanks for lovin’ on my bathroom. We all loved the blush color as it made have a pretty glow, especially in winter. Now the green makes us look ill. haha!!
Hi Larissa.
While reading this I was reminded of the dedication in a book of short stories I read recently.
‘Healing isn’t forgetting, it’s remembering without breaking”
I love the new colour, it’s lovely and restful
You bet.
There are mountains of highs and lows, and the key is keep stepping forward. Now check me tomorrow to see if I say the same thing with gusto. 😉
Thank you, Suzie.
I ditto what Carol said! Your tenacity to dive in and get er done blows me away. You inspire me to avoid picking up the phone and spending money I don’t have to figuring out how to do it myself. My garage door needs painting and instead of sourcing a student painter to do the job I was reminded of your recent post. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, time to pull a Larissa and become empowered. Thank you. xo
whew… that makes me so happy for you to think that way, but also my narc training kinda makes it hard to hear as accepting compliments can be hard (it’s a good thing you’re saying it though!) I hope that makes sense. I’d love to come help you paint and chat it up, Marie! 😀
Love this new color, Larissa! As green means growth I believe, it is fitting for this space and your journey and does have a “chillax” feel to it…Love it! So fresh, especially with the vase of flowers. I didn’t know how to fix my dryer when it started to do that, but noticed weirdly that if I used an alpaca wool ball in the load it wouldn’t squeal anymore. Removed it, it started up again. So for now anyway alpaca wool is helping me out 🙂
It sure does! I’ve told my kids a thousand times that blues and greens bring nature in and I know God made our environment to soothe us. Good on you for finding a quick fix! I make and use my wool dryer balls all the time. 🙂
