Moving on in life circumstances or even in physical location can be exciting, daunting, scary, and inspiring. Maybe you’re in a one of these situations, like I am. Today, I’m sharing Life Update #5 that is focusing on creating a DIY color block bedroom like I did in my son’s room. Isn’t this photo below ho-hum?
This is the veritable blank slate I see when I walk in here. Damage, wear, and yuck are what’s left for me to take care of. If you want to catch up to speed as to why I don’t reside in this space currently, you can read all LIFE UPDATES HERE.
So, as you can see, it’s a work in progress and today will bring some color fun. While I’ve always enjoyed the “sanctuary” I created with the whites and wood in my first remodel HERE.
WHERE TO START?
First, I prepped all that needs prepping.
And to make it more fun, you can see my video below showing the steps as well as sharing from the heart and more of what’s to come. If you don’t watch the video, you’re missing half of the story.
Isn’t it always the hardest to prep as opposed to doing the actual work you want to see? I caulk, patch, sand, and clean to get ready. What’s odd is that I haven’t been in this space for over two years and move my cupboard to find this behind for me to clean.
I find my long-lost toilet bolt cover that Ivan hits off all.the.time. And a few other treasures. I scrub and clean and have a hard time not being bitter.
LIGHT IT UP
Then, I finally get to install my ceiling light fixture. If you recall, in my last life update, I discuss what happened to my antique chandeliers. This time around, I’m after a relaxed, earthy vibe with soothing tones in my space. While this particular light is not my dream fixture, it will work for now. Thankfully, I’ve done dozens of lights and know my way around basic electrical projects.
This model can be installed in chandelier style, but I’m aiming for semi-flush. In order to do that, I need to clip and strip the wires. I no longer have my wire pliers, so I use these in a pinch, and they work fine.
I wish I could say this was straight-forward, but… this room didn’t originally have an overhead light. That meant the power to the switch came from an outlet in the wall (as did all the rooms). So, when I took down the old light, I thought it wouldn’t be a month or so before getting a new one. However, after two plus years, I forgot the wiring and it took me more trips to the breaker box than I want to admit. Finally, though, I remembered I needed to break the circuit in one of the wires in order for the switch to work.
Got it DONE.
Well, almost. I still need to get into the attic to adjust the crosspiece put up there to hold the electrical box so my fixture to rest flush to the ceiling.
TIRED AND TRYING
Next, I cut the closet brads sticking out, patch (see the video for all that) and then begin to paint. Yes, even I make a hot mess and not happy about it. sigh.
After I paint a bit, I catch a snooze with my furry bestie, Loula. We play rock, paper, paws for the sunspot. Guess who won?
While I went into this only planning to touch up the current paint, I need to do more… for me. With that, a color block bedroom is my goal and I’m in the mood for color, much like my recent bathroom update HERE.
While I share all the details in my video, I have to say that I never have bought a color I didn’t care for until now. All I kept singing while painting with the first color was, “Are You Washed in the Blood of the Lamb”. haha. That wrong color means Loula and I head back to the store before sunrise to get the right color. This is much better. whew!
Last, but not least, I need to paint the silver grommets on my curtains. I got them for so cheap and have gold curtain rods, so my eye would twitch if I didn’t match them.
MOSTLY DONE
Finally, I’m doing with most of my color block bedroom and am happy to take a break.
I’m smitten with it all and glad to have it not be an eyesore anymore. While I’m not sold on keeping the closet curtains, I put them back up for now.
My shelves remain empty as I still am not sure what to put on them and don’t want to dust anything. I don’t want books or shoes there. Maybe studio stuff?
And I’m still happy with my hollow core door makeover and the texture it adds to this space.
The gold accents bring warmth against the window trim. Additionally, I’m happy to have a light back in here after a few years without.
My healing journey will be for the rest of my life and I’m working hard to just let me be ME.

Change can be such a mix of emotions, but it’s always exciting to see a fresh start take shape! A DIY color block bedroom sounds like such a fun and creative way to bring new energy into a space. Can’t wait to see the transformation—what colors are you thinking of using.
It sure can be. I did share my finished room in this post with the colors. I’m just not finished furnishing.
Beautiful colors !
Can’t wait to see the furnishing you choose, you never disappoint and I’ll certainly be inspired for my own bedroom refresh !
Take care Larissa.
Thank you. It’s just what I envisioned. Other than a bed, I’m keeping it simple. I want a sanctuary.
Always LUV reading your posts. You are extremely talented in SO many ways. As always, an amazing transformation. Know that I do understand what you’re going through and praying for you daily.
Thank you for that touch of love, Fran. It’s a very long road.
Usually I can see your vision…..this time you have me stumped. It looks so much better already, I can’t wait to see the rest. I started a color block in my youngest room but haven’t found the energy to finish. In the meantime his mcm bed frame fell apart.
I got a kick out of Lula in the background, and a chuckle from your reference to “Washed in the Blood”. Continued prayers.
I’m glad you think so. Just think “less is more”. I only need a spot to sleep and the rest will come with time if I don’t sell first. Oh no on the bed! 🙁
Yes, Loula is with me every step – I’d be lost without her. I couldn’t help laughing while singing and painting to the tune! 😀
Inspiring as always! I think I’ve come to a point in my life where I want my whole house to feel like a sanctuary. I’ve noticed over the past year taking down smaller decorative doodads (not all, of course) but quite a few. I’m looking for more simple lines that are easy on the eyes and the mind, and clean colors. I do believe having decorative doodads are great an and can express so much about a person, but it’s nice to pare down as well!
Sending prayers and hugs for your journey of “YOU”!!
SAME girl, SAME. I’ve gotten rid of about 10 truckloads of things, and I can do with even less as I’m still giving away things. It feels phenomenal and the lessened workload is a blessing. Thank you and hugs, Jill!!
