What you see is a bifold closet door, a bookcase, and a glass side table. All marked with “trash” text and free for the picking. Like mother, like daughter, Simone (aka. Miss S) knew I might be interested. While I could have taken them all, she let others pick and brought me the table.
At first, I’m not impressed with it as it’s a modern box store piece, but the artist in me sees the #trashure. Or at least that it’s definitely not landfill material.
Lemme just say… this thing is heavy!! Not only is the cast base solid, but the beveled glass adds weight too. I also see these as a toe breaker. ouch.
Let’s take a closer look at it, shall we? Someone used a permanent marker to actually write “trash” on it. tsk.
Additionally, what you can’t see is the ornate details under that beveled glass.
One more thing, the wood frame is pine. Hardwood is preferred, but at least it’s real wood.
DIY TIME
Here’s the table without the glass so you can see the ironwork inside. First, I take the glass inside to remove the marker.
Using rubbing alcohol, the marker slides off. However, the metal frame that, I thought, was attached to the glass, actually came right off when I sprayed out all the stuck coffee.
Back in my workshop, I remove the top metal grid from the base by simple removing screws.
Next, I use wood filler to take care of all of the nicks and dents in the softwood pine and clean using a toothbrush.
CHANGE-UP
After that, I use my DIY furniture lazy susan and spray the iron with this new-to-me-paint of this glass side table rescue.
While this is not a sponsored post, I can honestly say I will never buy this paint again. I normally use Rustoleum 2X, but they didn’t have a similar color, so I opt for this one. The paint was a pain to use. Not only did I have to shake it non-stop, and I couldn’t spray upside down. Coverage stunk as well, though I think adhesion is fine.
Last, but not least, I paint the wood frame and ornate pieces with this Nutmeg that I’ve used before.
RESCUE COMPLETE
Finally, here is my glass side table rescue complete. The gorgeous details can be seen, and it’s muted for any room in your home.
Those ornate details pop, if even subtly, and the white makes the table less heavy in appearance.
Can you see the gorgeous bevel in the glass?

You did a fabulous job! Yes, I would’ve picked it up (or dragged or whatever) and brought it home too.
Thank you so much, Jean. 🙂 You are a kindred spirit. I’m just glad it found its way to a new home.
This turned out beautifully! I actually have the massive coffee table ‘big sister’ to this side table that I purchased probably 20+ yrs ago….it was great to see how you revitalized the end table. I’m inspired to think about how to redo my larger version of it!
That’s awesome, Stephanie! It’s a solid piece for sure so I can imagine my shins would take the heat on a coffee table. haha! Thanks so much.
I must not be your kind of people because I would not have rescued that piece lol, but it looks SO good now!! Who knew it could be so soft and lovely?? You, that’s who ha ha! XOXO
bwahahaha!! It’s not my norm for sure, but I’d at least take it to a free group instead of letting it go to trash. Thanks!
Beautiful! Yes, I would have taken it home. I love the scroll work of the base.
Thanks for the heads up on the spray paint.
Thanks for saying so, Ruth. 🙂 It had such lovely detail. It’s also unique because the iron was rough or bumpy for texture too.
As always you have the best eye and vision! What a great transformation! I would have brought it home too but don’t think I would have had the same vision. Really beautiful!
A kindred spirit you are, Susan. It just seemed so heavy and dark that I wanted to soften it up. Thanks!
This turned out beautiful 😍 I love the mix of colors. Very soft and feminine.
That is music to my ears, Nancy, as that is what I was after. Thank you so much!
I def would have grabbed this table. The ornate details and wrought iron with beveled glass – chefs kiss!… well NOW it is! This table makeover is gorgeous! Pinned XOXO
Yes!! That was all the stuff I didn’t know until she brought it home. I’m so glad she did! Thank you for the smile, Denise.
Gorgeous!!! The added details were a master stroke!!! Another one out of the park!! 😍
aww… you’re so fun! The details were there, they just needed drawn out. Thanks, girl!
Larissa, this was certainly an ugly duckling but you turned it into a Swan. It’s light and lovely and would fit into many decors. I almost thought you would put solid wood where the glass was. I’m glad you didn’t
I’m delighted to hear you think so, Fran. Thank you! I’m so happy with the outcome and effort was minimal.
Wow! What a difference a little love and care can make. It’s now soft and lovely. Thanks for the inspiration!
You are so sweet to say so, Kimberly. Thank you!
Well, I would not have picked it up. But, now that I see what you did with this one I would definitely pick it up. With your vision I see that it could be beautiful. Believe it or not I see a lot of these on the side of the road on trash day. Now thanks to your artistic mind we all know what to do.
It was quite the heavy beast before, right? haha 😀 Thanks so much, Robin. I bet you see them as they are so out of style… unless you can see a vision. 😉
I like the transformation as well. I have an iron side table with glass top and believe it could also use a lighter touch. Thank you for the inspiration.
Thank you, Susan. They’re such lovely pieces and simple to update without too much work.
It’s not my style, but; I would’ve probably grabbed it up and reimagined it for someone else! I am digging the softer tone in the top and overall airier feel. Sometimes wrought iron is so heavy (literally it is) and figuratively with the color and bulk. It’s very pretty now.
Same and exactly why I let her bring it home. Thanks for getting what I meant by heavy in all ways. 🙂
Oh my goodness! I love the colors you chose! I have to be honest, I don’t think I would have thought of changing the base color, but I’m so glad that you did! I probably would have chosen black or bronze, but the lighter color is just perfect! And yes, this would fit into just about any decor (including mine). Great find! Great makeover! ♥
yahoo!! I normally have done dark for iron as well, but with those details being hidden, I really wanted it to pop. Thanks so much, Barb!
Love it!
Thank you, Stephanie!
This is very cool Larissa! Great job.
You are sweet to say so, Caye. Thank you!
I love how you updated this one, Larissa! xoxo
Thank you, Nancy.
That is gorgeous.
Thank you for saying so, Michelle. 🙂
I would DEFINITELY draged that bad boy home! Especially if I had your talents and vision for that AWESOME end result! Great job!
yeah, baby!! 😀 Thank you for the huge smile, Jewles.
No, I would not have picked this up — but now I realize I would have LOVED it if I had done exactly what you did!!! It is just beautiful now!!! Beautiful work, Larissa!!!
tee hee! You’re so fun, Marti. I definitely couldn’t let it go to the landfill and was happy to give it new life. Thanks!
Yep. Think I would have grabbed it. I love the iron work details.
But glad you did it !! The colors are sooo much better.
Light and almost lacy. This is a total upgrade.
Love it !
Glad to hear I’m not the only one that saw the potential. Thank you!
